Description: A Fine William III Tankard. Makers mark C S, London 1695. The body and lid engraved with coats of arms and inscriptions. 15.5cm high 604.2 grams. 19.42 ounces. Has a scratch weight of 20 ounces.It is likely this piece was a gift to St. Johns College Oxford University Although the arms (on the lid) are those for Sir Thomas adopted by the college. The lettering around the shield is an abbreviated Latin for the college. The coat of arms on the body is for Thompson. The latin inscription "Ex domo Gulielmi Tompson de Humbleston in Agro Eborac: and Huius Coll Superioris ordanis Commensalaris" can be translated "The household of William Tompson of Humberston in Yorkshire and of this College Gentleman Commoner". The Commensalis was an ordinary Gentleman but the Commensales Superior were gentlemen of three years standing and were admitted to the High table and Fellows Stalls in Chapel. William Tompson was born about 1680 and matriculated to St. Johns College in 1695. By 1701 he was MP for Scarborough until 1722 and again from 1730-1744. He was Governor of Scarborough Castle 1713-144. Warden of the Mint 1718-29. Common Victualling Officer 1729-1744. He died in 1744, unmarried.
