Finely crafted of heavy gauge silver, each spoon with slender tapering shaft and fluted bowl in the form of a shell; the wide end of the handle engraved with winged griffin head and crown armorial motto. The back of one handle with faint Lion Passant hallmark, Leopard head City mark and "JL" maker's mark for John Lampfert of London (this mark registered in 1749). The second handle with only traces of a mark. While no date marks are visible, the spoons were made during the reign of George II (C.1727-1760) or George III (C.1760-1820).

Evenepoel Belgian (1872-1899), "Anvers et son Exposition", Plate No. 116. "Imprimerie Chaix" blind embossed stamp lower right corner.The "Les Maitres de l'Affiche" series was offered as a subscription series to collectors. Every month for 60 months, from December 1895 through November 1900, subscribers received by mail, 4 loose sheets (Maitres) with a cover sheet. It was sold in Paris for 2.50 francs for one month's subscription, (4 Maitres) and for 27 francs for 12 months (48 maitres), plus special (bonus) plates. Maitre's were never issued in a book form, but a binding of the 12 months Maitres was offered to subscribers, at the end of the year, with a beautiful hardcover design by Paul Berthon for 8 Francs. The "Maitres de l'Affiche," were issued as separate numbered sheets, referred to as "plates" (PL). They were numbered, with the printers name "Imprimerie Chaix," in the margin at the bottom left hand corner, "PL.1" to "PL.240." In the margin at the bottom right hand corner of each, is a blind embossed stamp from a design of Cheret's.

Condition Report: Good condition. Slight toning to paper. A number of creases to paper throughout. Two small tears along margin edge, one located lower left edge and the second along the upper right edge (neither affect center image).

Winthrop Duthie Turney was born in New York City on December 8, 1884 and studied at the Art Students League under the guidance of George de Forest Brush, Frank V. DuMond and Louis Loeb. He was a member of the Fifteen Gallery Group, Allied Artists of America, and the Brooklyn Society of Modern Artists. Turney exhibited widely, including the Allied Artists of America, which awarded him a prize in 1944, as well as the Newark Museum, Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Museum of Modern Art. Winthrop Turney was a muralist for the WPA and also worked in watercolor. He was noted for his Brooklyn themes - -backyards, waterfront scenes, portraits on the subway and streets of Brooklyn as well as for a series of quarry landscapes in Gloucester, and various views of trees and shrubs in Mountainville.

Georgian Period French Silver Mounted Faux Tortoiseshell Snuff Box, 18th Century

Description: Antique Georgian Period French Silver Mounted Faux Tortoiseshell Snuff Box, 18th C. France. Of oval form, the surface of the cover decorated with embossed landscape scene with naively rendered buildings flanking a three-masted ship set within a flower and scroll patterned border, the surface with traces of silver inlay. The box fitted with hand engraved French silver rims, raised thumbpiece and stand away hinge, the back edge of the inside rim stamped with French dog’s head (a pointer) discharge mark (tax paid) used in Paris, Circa 1762-1768 (possibly apocryphal). Otherwise unmarked.

Condition Report: The box has been extensively restored. The base of the case appears to have been re-attached and there is a crack visible along the interior just above the bottom rim. There are numerous small patches visible along the sides and edges of the hinged cover and base along with some small chips/losses to the edge of the back rim on the cover. There is some scratching/wear to the silver mounts which appears to have been re-attached and the majority of the silver inlay to the cover's design is missing. Overall, the box is in fair condition.

The sconces each have a pair of tassels that form the stem with two branches attached at the middle. The branches are ornamented with molded ribbons, and the candle holders are surrounded in acanthus leaves. Each sconce has been drilled for electric wiring. Unmarked.

Condition Report: Some oxidation to the interiors of the candle holders. On one of the sconces, one arm has been punctured, leaving a small hole. It is not really visible as it is towards the back of the arm and directly below the bobeche. Overall, in very good condition.
