A dedicatory epistle accompanying Wyatt's survey of the Calais defences. Written in a scribal hand, but signed by the author, Wyatt notes that his accompanying treatise is "a thinge I desiere shuld rather keep wt in ye limits of a private dutie. The thinge is conceavid wt a sudden Pen and hatched wt a weake iudgmet, so as it ca rather creepe, then flye, otherwise then as you shal beare it up wt your accustomed good opinion." Wyatt's writings were never published. The manuscript of the Treatise on the Defence of Calais is the British Library Add. Mss 62135.

Description: (Frederic Maurice de La Tour d'Auvergne , duc de, prince of Sedan, French general, governor of Maastricht, , 1605-62).- Correspondence to the Duc de Bouillon, 2 letters, comprising: (1) Letter from J Sonns to the Duc de Bouillon, at the Hague, 2pp. & address panel, folio, Whitehall, London, 3/13 April 1626, on a variety of subjects, including, activities in Parliament are falling heavily on the duke of Buckingham "mon grant army", who is much disliked, and the interventkion of Charles I; the French ambassadors to England are returning, but their ships not ready; peace made between France and Spain etc.; (2) Letter from Henri de Livron, Marquis de Ville, to the Duc de Bouillon, 1p., folio, Brussels, 13th February 1637, the writer had expected to pay a ransom of 1000 pistoles but on arriving at Brussels found it was not their and could only raise 600, but believes Bouillon will accept this sum, ""En attedant que je puisse envoyer la reste ce que je feray estant en bourgogne ou je va trouver SA mon Maistre vous cognoistres comme je desire aveq passion de satisfaire a ma parolle et me revancher par mes services de la courtoisie que jay receu de V E ", torn where opened, folds, browned ; and another, a notarial copy of the second letter (3). The first letter of 1626, from a French resident in London relates to Bouillon's military years in the Low Countries, and is chiefly informative on Anglo-French relations, and the Duke of Buckingham. The second letter illustrates the problems of collecting ransoms in the Thirty Years War.

Signatures include: Captains Richard Dacres (Royal George), Henry Blackwood (Ajax, blew up in the Dardanelles), Charles Boyles (Windsor Castle), A.K. Legge (Repulse), James Collins (Meteor), R.H. Moubray (Active), Elliot (Lucifer). Receipts of attested copies from Duckworth of various orders, including: private signals for Sicillians and the British Mediterranean Station, an order relating to Prussians, a memorandum on training seamen in the exercise of small arms, orders to put themselves under Duckworth's command etc. In 1807 Duckworth was commanded by the Admiralty to sail to Constantinople in support of the British Ambassador Charles Arbuthnot in his negotiations with the Ottoman Empire. Duckworth forced the Dardanelles with great difficulty and when Arbuthnot fell ill withdrew, sustaining significant damage to several of his ships.
