Other Notes: Roger Medearis draws his imagery from his upbringing in the Midwest. Born in 1920 in Fayettte Missouri, he studied under Thomas Hart Benton at the Kansas City Art Institute where he mastered the Renaissance technique of painting in egg tempera. Unlike his fellow Regionalists, however, he added a touch of surrealism, or magic realism, into his rural subjects as evidenced in Old October. The preparatory drawing for Old October shows the strength of Medearis' draftsmanship and the attention he gave to his compositions.

Zierler, New York; Philip Zierler, New York; Private collection, Virginia. Exhibitions: Pace Gallery, New York, "Nicholas Krushenick: Paintings", March18-April15, 1967; Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, Minnesota, "Nicholas Krushenick", January 20 - February 25, 1968, n. 30. Other Notes: Nicholas Krushenick was Born in New York City in 1929. He attended the Art Students League of New York, and the Hans Hofmann School Of Art. Krushenick began showing his work publicly in New York in 1957 and by 1962, his work was shown at upscale galleries. He was a contemporary of the Pop artists, but took Pop art to a different level, closer to the Op movement. His use of primary colors, and outlines of hard-edged, geometric shapes make his work stand on its own. "From the outset, he was adamantly anti-formalist without being nostalgic or reactionary," writes critic John Yau. "He believed it was the artist's right and responsibility to be independent, and he determinedly explored and defined a territory that was all his own."His works are currently part of major permanent collections such as the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo, New York; Dallas Museum of Fine Arts; Los Angeles County Museum of Art; Hirshhorn Museum at the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C.; the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Museum of Modern Art in New York City. This painting, "United Color Kit" 1967, is a brilliant example of Krushenicks work.
