A fine, rare vintage signed sepia postcard photograph of Trumper standing in a full length pose, wearing his cricket pads and gloves, and holding a bat in one hand. Signed ('V. Trumper') in fountain pen ink with his name alone at the base of the image. Post marked to the verso Leeds, 5th July 1905, and evidently signed during the England vs. Australia Test Match (The Ashes, 3rd Test) at Headingley, Leeds, 3rd, 4th & 5th July 1905. AUSTRALIA CRICKET: Frank Laver (1869-1919)

Lot 2: AUSTRALIA CRICKET: Frank Laver (1869-1919)

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: AUSTRALIA CRICKET: Frank Laver (1869-1919) Australian Cricketer. An unusual partially printed document, unsigned, completed in pencil in Laver's hand, one page, 8vo, n.p., August 1905. The document is an Order of Going In to which Laver has selected the names of eleven of the Australian Cricket Team, with holograph corrections to the final four. Laver's order is Trumper, Darling, Hill, Noble, Armstrong, Hopkins, McCleod, Cotter, Laver, Gehrs and Howell. A large circular file hole appears to the centre of the upper edge, very slightly affecting the printed text. Together with Pelham F. Warner (1873-1963) English Cricketer. A.L.S., Plum, one page, 8vo (very slightly neatly trimmed), Leeds, near Maidstone, Kent, 8th May 1909, to Queux, stating that he hopes his correspondent will be able to play against Sussex and Kent on various dates in May. G to about VG, 2. During the 1905 tour of England Laver was appointed player-manager by the Australian Board of Control. His list of players on the present document does not exactly match the scorecards for any of the games Australia played on their English tour in 1905, although is very close to the games played against Gloucestershire at Cheltenham on 28th, 29th & 30th August and against an England XI at Bournemouth on 31st August and 1st & 2nd September.

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: SUTCLIFFE HERBERT: (1894-1978) English Cricketer. Series of ten A.Ls.S., Herbert Sutcliffe and H Sutcliffe, eighteen pages (total), 4to, 8vo and one letter on a correspondence card, Leeds, 24th November 1933 - 6th January 1937, all to Mrs. A. Stair in London, most on the attractive printed stationery of Herbert Sutcliffe Ltd. Sutcliffe writes to his correspondent, seemingly a landlady, on a variety of subjects, in part, 'It is very kind of you to ask me to stay.... I have to attend Sir Home Gordons dinner & I arranged to stay at an hotel with one of the chaps....If Mr. Stair finds it difficult to leave business for a game of golf - do please tell him not to worry. In any case my handicap is much too long for Mr. Stair who would probably prefer to play with a scratch man & not a rabbit. Would Mr. Stair like to go with me to my Lodge meeting on Monday. I'd be delighted if he could. I have asked Arthur Gilligan to be one of my guests.' (24th November 1933), 'I have just bought an A.C. car in town. I like it immensely - the engine runs like silk. It is a much smaller car than my Sunbeam & I'm afraid I shall miss the lavish space, but it is much faster - & cheaper to run...' (2nd March 1934), '....the stump was left for you. The Hall porter gave instructions for same to be wrapped in brown paper & I wrote your name....would you be good enough to call again & make inquiries. The Day Head Porter had the stump in hand.' (29th June 1934), 'We are exceptionally busy at the moment - receiving orders for the coming season....I am not quite certain about the golf balls for Mr. Stair but I have instructed my manager to send "Silver King". Do hope they are alright. I can guarantee a round of 85 or under even despite the huge proportions which you say has developed in your "better" (?) half. I too have increased half a stone during the Winter months.' (13th March 1935), 'Your 45 acres sounds good to me. I'd love to see it sometime. It must be marvellous....Was in town last Monday but had to return the same night on account of my Test press work....We have done quite well in Australia, but they shd. have taken the veterans - don't you think?' (6th June 1937). Eight of the letters are accompanied by the original envelopes, most of which are hand addressed by Sutcliffe. Together with a vintage signed postcard photograph of Sutcliffe standing in a half length pose wearing his cricket blazer. Signed in dark fountain pen ink with his name alone across a light area of the image. Also including several newspaper clippings relating to Sutcliffe and a 12mo printed Yorkshire CCC fixtures list for the 1935 season. The lot also includes a small selection of unrelated A.Ls.S. and T.Ls.S. by a variety of famous individuals including Malcolm Sargent, Elizabeth Goudge (2), Ada Cherry Kearton, Ernest Raymond etc. Facsimile (1). A.L.S., Bill Voce, one page, 8vo, Hucknall, Nottingham, n.d., to a gentleman, explaining that he has not got a single photograph of himself, adding that he has given away all that he had and that his correspondent should contact the Press Association in London.
