Hugh Douglas Hamilton - Portrait of the Countess of Kildare; and Portrait of Mrs Christopher Dominck - pastel and chalk

Lot 474: Hugh Douglas Hamilton - Portrait of the Countess of Kildare; and Portrait of Mrs Christopher Dominck - pastel and chalk

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Hugh Douglas Hamilton (Irish, 1739-1808) Portrait of Mary, Countess of Kildare (1692-1780); and Portrait of Mrs Christopher Dominick pastel and chalk (a pair) h:22 w: 19 cm Provenance: The Dukes of Leinster and by descent. No. 12 and No.15 in the Inventory of the Catalogue of Pictures and Antiquities at Carton, 1885, pp.33-35 in the Duke's Study amongst 28 oval portraits by Hugh Douglas Hamilton, Nos.12 and 15. Mary, Countess of Kildare, was the wife of the 19th Earl of Kildare. There are two portraits in this lot - the Countess of Kildare and Mrs Christopher Dominick (the latter sitter only illustrated in the catalogue).. The identity of the sitter illustrated is not Lady Augusta FitzGerald - on the reverse of the mount in a modern hand is the incorrect Carton Catalogue No.16 (which is in face Lot 477 - Charles James Fox). In all probability the number was misread and transcribed incorrectly, and was in fact Carton House Catalogue No.15, which is Mrs Dominick (died 1796, mother of Lady St George) The sitter is Mrs Christopher Dominick (nee Rebecca Hamilton, daughter of James Hamilton of Carlow). Rebecca Hamilton married Christopher Dominick ( d.1743) of Dominick Street, the son of Dr Christopher Dominick. She was the mother of Elizabeth Dominick (1732-1813) who married St George Saint-George 1734; their daughter Emily Olivia Usher St George (b.1732) became the wife of the 2nd Duke of Leinster. We are grateful to Neil Jeffares and John Somerville for their assistance in the identification of the sitter.

Condition Report: Condition appears fine. The Countess of Kildare is inscribed with title to the reverse. Conservation grade framing with museum board. Lady Augusta FitzGerald bears the No.16 to the reverse. Both pastel and chalk.

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Hugh Douglas Hamilton (Irish, 1739-1808) Portrait of Lord Henry FitzGerald (1761-1829) pastel h:23 w: 19 cm Provenance: The Dukes of Leinster and by descent. In the Catalogue of Pictures and Antiquities at Carton, 1885, pp.33-35 in the Duke's Study amongst 28 oval portraits by Hugh Douglas Hamilton, No.5. The identity of the sitter has now been recognised as Lord Henry FitzGerald (1761-1829), a younger brother of the 2nd Duke of Leinster. One of seventeen children of the 1st Duke, he was, through his mother, Lady Emily Gordon-Lennox, a great great grandson of Charles II. He married in 1791 Charlotte Boyle (1771-1831) in whose favour the ancient Barony of de Ros was called out of abeyance (since 1687) in 1806. Together they had six sons and five daughters. Lord Henry was the fourth son of the 1st Duke of Leinster and in October 1777 was appointed Cornet in the 3rd Regiment of Horse (or Carabineers) in Ireland and it is in their red uniform with white facings, no lace and one epaulette on the left shoulder, that he is wearing in this portrait which can be very precisely dated, as the sitter transferred in November 1778 to the 66th Foot.
