Description: FRITZ REHM (1871-1928) CIGARETTEN LAFERME / DRESDEN. 1896. 34 1/2x22 3/4 inches, 87 1/2x57 3/4 cm. Grimme & Hempel, Leipzig. Condition A- / B+: creases and abrasions in margins and image; pencil notation in bottom left corner. Paper. Rehm was one of the few German artists represented in the Maitres de l'Affiche. This image of "Der Kenner" ["the Connoisseur"], was a prize-winning design in a poster competition sponsored by the Leipzig-based printing house, Grimme & Hempel. This image resonated throughout the advertising community, as can be seen in the manner in which it was copied, even in its own time (see lot 219). Maitres pl. 124, Maitres 1900 p. 172, DFP-III 2637, Chemnitz 377.

Lot 3: EMIL RANZENHOFER (1864-1930). FAVORIT / DER FREUND DER RAUCHER. 1902. 24x37 inches, 63x95 cm. Gesellschaft fur Graphische Industrie, Vi

Description: EMIL RANZENHOFER (1864-1930) FAVORIT / DER FREUND DER RAUCHER. 1902. 24 3/4x37 1/2 inches, 63x95 1/2 cm. Gesellschaft fur Graphische Industrie, Vienna. Condition A-: minor tears and losses at edges; vertical fold; ink notation on verso showing through. Paper. As smoking became more and more prevalent, smoking accessories also became the subject of advertising; this "cigar ring pin" was basically a roach clip for men smoking in the office. Note the slight whiff of Art Nouveau stylization in the handling of the smoke and how the motif is reflected in the poster's borders. Denscher p. 138.

H. GRAY (HENRI BOULANGER, 1858-1924). RIZ ABADIE. 1898. 55x39 inches, 139x99 cm. Courmont Freres, Paris.

Lot 4: H. GRAY (HENRI BOULANGER, 1858-1924). RIZ ABADIE. 1898. 55x39 inches, 139x99 cm. Courmont Freres, Paris.

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: H. GRAY (HENRI BOULANGER, 1858-1924) RIZ ABADIE. 1898. 55x39 1/4 inches, 139 3/4x99 3/4 cm. Courmont Freres, Paris. Condition B+: tears, repaired tears and punch holes at edges; creases and abrasions in margins and image; staining in image; vertical and horizontal folds. Paper. Gray was one of the most versatile and prolific of the popular French Belle Epoque poster artists. He used his diverse style to advertise entertainers and entertainment venues, tourist destinations, bicycle companies and other commericial products. Here he pays homage to the work of Alphonse Mucha. In many ways this image can be viewed as variations of Mucha's 1896 and 1898 posters for Job rolling paper. Gray captures the essence of Mucha's work by placing his central figure within a halo and using a mosaic-style wallpaper in the background. Tagebuch 60, Maitres 1900 p. 17.

Lot 5: H. GRAY (HENRI BOULANGER, 1858-1924). PETROLE STELLA. 1897. 51x39 inches, 129x100 cm. Courmont Freres, Paris.

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: H. GRAY (HENRI BOULANGER, 1858-1924) PETROLE STELLA. 1897. 51x39 1/2 inches, 129 1/2x100 1/4 cm. Courmont Freres, Paris. Condition B+: tears and repaired tears at edges, some affecting image; creases and punch holes in margins; vertical and horizontal folds; tape on verso. Paper. In the late 1890s, Gray designed a number of posters which were substantially different from most other posters being designed at the time. They each presented scantily-clad women, or winged faeries, afloat in the cosmos with the products being advertised. The progressive designs exuded more of a science fiction and fantasy feeling than anything close to the prevailing Art Nouveau style; with Phoebus, Cycles Sirius and Cycles Briliant advertising bicycles, and this image for lamp oil. DFP-II 421, Affichomanie 116.

Description: JULIUS KLINGER (1876-1950) PALM CIGARREN. Circa 1906. 27 1/2x37 1/4 inches, 70x94 1/2 cm. Hollerbaum & Schmidt, Berlin. Condition B+: creases and light staining in margins and image; vertical fold. Paper. Klinger studied art in Vienna but worked in Berlin for the printer and publisher, Hollerbaum & Schmidt, as well as for the satiric magazine, Lustige Blätter. He was a prolific, versatile and inventive graphic artist, with a style that ranged from the flat tones and strong outlining popular in Germany at the time, to strictly typographic pieces and bold and daring graphic constructions. It is evident, however, that his preferred mode of design was through caricature. We have been unable to find another copy of this poster at auction. rare Klinger 16, DFP-III 1645, Wember 470, Fruhe Berliner 558, Weill 176.
