Tomb of the Jigendaishi

Ships From: Philadelphia, PA US

Description: Arrah Lee Gaul was born in Christiana in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, and attended the Philadelphia High School for Girls, where she won a scholarship to study at the Philadelphia School of Design for Women (now the Moore College of Art and Design) from 1907 to 1910. She began to exhibit at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and the National Academy of Design in New York City. Gaul became one of the founding members of the group of women painters known as the Philadelphia Ten. Working in two different studios in New York, the artist painted until she was ninety years old. Gaul painted this view sometime between 1950 and 1952, when she worked in Japan. The artist developed a special affinity for the country as she painted its historic Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines. The subject here is the tomb of Tenkai (1536–1643) in Nikko. He was a Tendai Buddhist monk who served the Tokugawa shogunate. He achieved the rank of Daisōjō, the highest of the priesthood, and was posthumously granted the title of Jigen Daishi.

Racing at Gibraltar

Ships From: Philadelphia, PA US

Description: A specialist in equestrian hunting and racing subjects, Lionel Dalhoisie Edwards has been called the "grand old man of British Sporting Art." Born in Clifton, England, he studied under A.S. Cope in South Kensington, London, at Heatherley's School of Fine Art in Chelsea, and with the British artist William Frank Calderon. During his early years Edwards was deeply influenced by the work of the French painter Aime Morot. After serving in the Army Remount Service during the First World War, he worked as an illustrator for a number of publications in London including The Graphic and Punch. For the next six decades, from 1920 to 1960, he painted watercolors such as these two examples of sporting subjects that were admired for their spontaneity, understanding of horses, and atmospheric landscape settings. Much of Edwards's success can be attributed to the fact that he was an avid sportsman and horseman who hunted well into his eighties. Edwards exhibited at the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours, of which he became a member in 1927, and other London galleries including the Royal Academy in 1931, and he was a member of the London Sketch Club. He illustrated numerous books including My Hunting Sketch Book (two volumes, London, 1928 and 1930). He lived at West Tytherley, Wiltshire for many years.

Johnston (1983) states that "Bebie was one of the most sought-after portrait painters in the city, his canvases depicting in careful detail the fashionable dress and accessories of his subjects." He is also known to have painted miniatures and a series of pictures showing Baltimore interiors. This courtyard scene was painted during his time in Baltimore. Entrance Hall of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, When in Fourteenth Street

Ships From: Philadelphia, PA US

Description: From 1873 to 1879 the Metropolitan Museum of Art occupied the Douglas Mansion, the former home of Harriet Douglas Cruger at 12B West Fourteenth Street. From 1879 until about 1881, Waller created several drawings, etchings and oil studies of the entrance hall of the building. An oil study similar to this currently hangs in the museum today. The piece, along with a grand interior view of one of the exhibition galleries, also painted by Waller, were purchased by the Museum during their fiftieth anniversary celebration. Frank Waller was born in New York in 1842, the son of a dry goods merchant. He studied drawing at the Free Academy of the City of New York (known since 1961 as the City College of New York) from about 1857 to 1861. Waller first exhibited at the National Academy of Design in 1870 and later that year went to Rome and studied with John Gadsby Chapman. Waller returned to New York in 1871, and the following year he toured Egypt with his friend and fellow artist Edwin White. Boulder in Woods

Ships From: Philadelphia, PA US

Description: Carl Sprinchorn was born in Sweden, and spent much of his life in New York State but is most associated with Maine. Between 1937 and 1952, he lived near Shin Pond in Maine's North Woods, painting the life of Maine lumberjacks, hunters, and river drivers. He arrived in New York City from Sweden at age 16 and enrolled in the New York School of Art where he was a long-time student of Robert Henri and also studied with William Merritt Chase. In the 1920s, he painted and worked as a lumberjack in Maine from a small cultural settlement of Swedish Americans in Monson. He was a close friend of Marsden Hartley, whom he met in New York in 1916. They painted in Provincetown, Massachusetts, and Ogunquit, Maine, and in 1919, went to California together. They re-met twenty years later when Hartley visited the North Woods of Maine. After Sprinchorn's death in Albany, New York, his reputation was that of a virtual unknown, helped by the fact that it took twenty years to settle his estate and his work was out of circulation until 1994.
