Description: Title: Peter Pan in Kensington GardensAuthor: J. M. Barrie - Sir James Matthew Barrie, 1st Baronet, OM was a Scottish author and dramatist, best remembered today as the creator of Peter Pan. The child of a family of small-town weavers, he was educated in Scotland. He moved to London, where he developed a career as a novelist and playwright. There he met the Llewelyn Davies boys who inspired him in writing about a baby boy who has magical adventures in Kensington Gardens (included in "The Little White Bird"), then to write "Peter Pan, or The Boy Who Wouldn't Grow Up," a "fairy play" about this ageless boy and an ordinary girl named Wendy who have adventures in the fantasy setting of Neverland. This play quickly overshadowed his previous work and although he continued to write successfully, it became his best-known work, credited with popularizing the name Wendy, which was very uncommon previously. Barrie unofficially adopted the Davies boys following the deaths of their parents. Before his death, he gave the rights to the Peter Pan works to Great Ormond Street Hospital, which continues to benefit from them.Publisher: Charles Scribner's SonsCity: New YorkYear: 1906Printing Information: First US EditionBinding Style: HardcoverPagination: 126 pagesWidth: 7.75" Height: 10.25"Book Details: Condition / Notes: This is a scarce first printing of this novel, with statement "Published December, 1906" on copyright page.Antique volume is bound in green cloth with stamped gilt lettering to spine and front cover. Description: Title: Aesop's Fables with Instructive Morals and Reflections Abstracted from All Party Considerations, Adapted to All Capacities; And Design'd To Promote Religion, Morality, and Universal Benevolance. Containing Two Hundred and Forty Fables with a Cut Engrav'd on Copper to Each Fable. And Life of Aesop Prefixed. By Mr. RichardsonAuthor: Aesop - Aesop was a Greek writer credited with a number of popular fables. Older spellings of his name have included Esop(e) and Isope. Although his existence remains uncertain and no writings by him survive, numerous tales credited to him were gathered across the centuries and in many languages in a storytelling tradition that continues to this day. In many of the tales, animals speak and have human characteristics.Scattered details of Aesop's life can be found in ancient sources, including Aristotle, Herodotus, and Plutarch. An ancient literary work called The Aesop Romance tells an episodic, probably highly fictional version of his life, including the traditional description of him as a strikingly ugly slave who by his cleverness acquires freedom and becomes an adviser to kings and city-states. A later tradition (dating from the Middle Ages) depicts Aesop as a black Ethiopian. Depictions of Aesop in popular culture over the last 2500 years have included several works of art and his appearance as a character in numerous books, films, plays, and television programs.Editor: Samuel RichardsonPublisher: Printed for J. Description: Title: Fox in SocksAuthor: Theodor Seuss Geisel - Theodor Seuss Geisel was an American writer, poet, and cartoonist. He was most widely known for his children's books written and illustrated as Dr. Seuss. He had used the pen name Dr. Theophrastus Seuss in college and later used Theo LeSieg and Rosetta Stone.Geisel published 46 children's books, often characterized by imaginative characters, rhyme, and frequent use of anapestic meter. His most-celebrated books include the bestselling "Green Eggs and Ham," "The Cat in the Hat," "The Lorax," "One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish," "The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins," "Fox in Socks," "The King's Stilts," "Hop on Pop," "Thidwick the Big-Hearted Moose," "Horton Hatches the Egg," "Horton Hears a Who!," and "How the Grinch Stole Christmas!". He won the Lewis Carroll Shelf Award in 1958 for "Horton Hatches the Egg" and again in 1961 for "And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street." Geisel also worked as an illustrator for advertising campaigns, most notably for Flit and Standard Oil, and as a political cartoonist for PM, a New York City newspaper. During World War II, he worked in an animation department of the United States Army, where he wrote "Design for Death," a film that later won the 1947 Academy Award for Documentary Feature. He was a perfectionist in his work and would sometimes spend up to a year on a book. It was not uncommon for him to throw out 95% of his material until he settled on a theme for his book. For a writer he was unusual in that he preferred to be paid only after he finished his work rather than in advance.Geisel's birthday, March 2, has been adopted as the annual date for National Read Across America Day, an initiative on reading created by the National Education Association.Publisher: Beginner Books / Random HouseCity: New YorkYear: 1965Printing Information: First PrintingBinding Style: HardcoverPagination: 61 pagesWidth: 7" Height: 9.5"Book Details: Condition / Notes: This is a scarce first printing, with correct list of titles on rear panel of dust jacket. Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Book Details: This lot includes the rare Cuban book shown in the corresponding image(s). This is a scarce photo album commemorating the voyage of the ship that was used to transport the fighters of the Cuban Revolution from Mexico to Cuba in 1956 for the purpose of overthrowing the regime of Fulgencio Batista. The album was published in Cuba and shows pictures of all those that died in the operation, as well as the heroes of the Revolution in a most pictorial fashion. The book begins with 27 pictures of those who died, each one being named a "martir." This edition of the album was distributed among the surviving members. The backgrounds of the pictures show vignettes of the actual conflict that would lead to the eventual overthrow of Batista's government. Following the martyrs are 54 pictures of those who survived, again against similar backgrounds. Included in this last group are pictures of Fidel and Raul Castro, as well as of a very young Ernesto "Che" Guevara. The title page details the particulars of the expedition (points of departure/arrival, number of crew, size of the vessel, length of voyage) that set out from Texpan, Mexico on November 25, 1956. Also imprinted on the title page is the statement that proceeds from this album will go to the building of a vault for the martyrs of the "Granma" (which is today exhibited in the Granma Memorial adjacent to the Museo de la Revolucion in Havana). It is rumored that a copy of this was buried with each deceased revolutionary, leaving few copies still in existence. To inspect and acquire more detailed information about this lot, please attend our live preview before the auction. Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Title: Le paradis perdu de Milton: poeme heroique traduit de l'anglois. Avec les remarques de Mr. AddissonAuthor: John Milton - John Milton was an English poet, polemicist, and civil servant for the Commonwealth of England. He is best known for his epic poem Paradise Lost.He was a scholarly man of letters, a polemical writer, and an official serving under Oliver Cromwell. He wrote at a time of religious flux and political upheaval in England, and his poetry and prose reflect deep convictions and address many urgent contemporary issues, such as his treatise condemning licensing (pre-publication censorship), Areopagitica. He wrote in Latin and Italian as well as in English, and had an international reputation during his lifetime. After his death, Milton's critical reception oscillated, a state of affairs that continued through the centuries. At an early stage he became the subject of partisan biographies, such as that of John Toland from the nonconformist perspective, and a hostile account by Anthony à Wood. Samuel Johnson wrote unfavourably of his politics as those of "an acrimonious and surly republican"; but praised Paradise Lost "a poem which, considered with respect to design may claim the first place, and with respect to performance, the second, among the productions of the human mind". William Hayley's 1796 biography called him the "greatest English author". He remains generally regarded "as one of the preeminent writers in the English language and as a thinker of world importance."Publisher: Cailleau; Brunet, Fils; Bordelet; HenryCity: ParisYear: 1729Binding Style: HardcoverNumber of Volumes: 2 Complete: NoWidth: 4" Height: 6.75"Book Details: Condition / Notes: These are the first two volumes of a three-volume French-language edition of John Milton's "Paradise Lost."Antique set is bound in full leather with raised bands and stamped gilt lettering & ornamental designs to spines. Lot 1030: William Shakespeare THE TEMPEST A COMEDY 1901 Antique Drama Color Drawings By Robert Anning Bell Decorative Leather

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Title: The Tempest: A ComedyAuthor: William Shakespeare - William Shakespeare was an English poet and playwright, widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world's pre-eminent dramatist. He is often called England's national poet and the "Bard of Avon." His surviving works, including some collaborations, consist of about 38 plays, 154 sonnets, two long narrative poems, and several other poems. His plays have been translated into every major living language and are performed more often than those of any other playwright.Shakespeare was born and raised in Stratford-upon-Avon. At the age of 18, he married Anne Hathaway, with whom he had three children: Susanna, and twins Hamnet and Judith. Between 1585 and 1592, he began a successful career in London as an actor, writer, and part owner of a playing company called the Lord Chamberlain's Men, later known as the King's Men. He appears to have retired to Stratford around 1613, where he died three years later. Few records of Shakespeare's private life survive, and there has been considerable speculation about such matters as his physical appearance, sexuality, religious beliefs, and whether the works attributed to him were written by others.Shakespeare produced most of his known work between 1589 and 1613. His early plays were mainly comedies and histories, genres he raised to the peak of sophistication and artistry by the end of the 16th century. He then wrote mainly tragedies until about 1608, including "Hamlet", "King Lear," "Othello," and "Macbeth", considered some of the finest works in the English language. In his last phase, he wrote tragicomedies, also known as romances, and collaborated with other playwrights. Many of his plays were published in editions of varying quality and accuracy during his lifetime. In 1623, two of his former theatrical colleagues published the First Folio, a collected edition of his dramatic works that included all but two of the plays now recognized as Shakespeare's.Shakespeare was a respected poet and playwright in his own day, but his reputation did not rise to its present heights until the 19th century. The Romantics, in particular, acclaimed Shakespeare's genius, and the Victorians worshipped Shakespeare with a reverence that George Bernard Shaw called "bardolatry." In the 20th century, his work was repeatedly adopted and rediscovered by new movements in scholarship and performance. His plays remain highly popular today and are constantly studied, performed and reinterpreted in diverse cultural and political contexts throughout the world.Publisher: Freemantle & Co. Description: Title: Histoire de France avant Clovis. L'origine des Francois, & leur establissement dans les Gaules, l'estat de la religion, & la conduite des eglises dans les Gaules, jusqu'au regne de ClovisAuthor: Francois Eudes de Mezeray - Francois Eudes de Mezeray was a French historian.Mézeray was born at Rye near Argentan, where his father was a surgeon. He had two brothers, one of whom, Jean-Eudes, was the founder of the order of the Eudists. Francois studied at the University of Caen, and completed his education at the College of Ste Barbe at Paris. His "Histoire de France depuis Faramond jusqu'au regne de Louis le juste" (3 vols., 1643-1651), is a fairly accurate summary of French and Latin chronicles.Mezeray was appointed to a committee that supervised La Gazette.Mezeray won the favor of Pierre Seguier and was given the title "Historiographer to the King of France". In 1649, on the death of Vincent Voiture, he was admitted to the Academie française. His "Abrege chronologique"(3 vols., 1667-1668) went through fifteen editions between 1668 and 1717; and he used it to attack the financiers, with the result that his salary as historiographer was diminished by Colbert.Mezeray succeeded Valentin Conrart as permanent secretary to the Academie française (1675), and died at Paris. He translated Grotius's "Traite de la religion chretienne" (1640), and a "Histoire des Turcs depuis 1612 jusqu'en 1649" (1650), which is an addition to a continuation of Demetrius Chalcondyles. Lot 1050: William Shakespeare MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM c1920 Antique English Drama Decorative Binding Arthur Rackham Illustrations Color Plates

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Title: Midsummer-Night's DreamAuthor: William Shakespeare - William Shakespeare was an English poet and playwright, widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world's pre-eminent dramatist. His plays remain highly popular today and are constantly studied, performed and reinterpreted in diverse cultural and political contexts throughout the world.Publisher: Doubleday, Page & Co.City: New YorkYear: circa 1920Binding Style: HardcoverPagination: 134 pagesWidth: 7.75" Height: 10"Book Details: Condition / Notes: This is a scarce first American edition with illustrations by Arthur Rackham.Antique volume is bound in green cloth with stamped gilt lettering to spine and front cover.
