L1 RARE FRENCH 1870s STAGED SEPARATED MAIDEN FIGURAL & RETICULATED MAJOLICA VASE

Lot 1: L1 RARE FRENCH 1870s STAGED SEPARATED MAIDEN FIGURAL & RETICULATED MAJOLICA VASE

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: This first lot of our half century long collection of classic Majolica begins with a French 1870s to 1880s Rare, free standing Summer maiden figural before an ovoid reticulated rustic twig and Pomegranate flower vase. This gorgeous enhanced vase carries only a numeric lot designation on the deep dished base, which would seem to preclude Sarreguemines, but does sport a slightly eccentric weep hole, indicating a hand finished, pre machine 1890s era drilling. The overall design is early Art Nouveau & definitely French as are the bright yet subtly thin applied lead Turquoise, Aquamarine & pink hues, in deference to the darker Germanic backgrounds. The blending of the color borders + the somewhat austere mold definition in the facial & hand features, eliminates most of the English & American firms, and the soft pastel colors, do not have the dynamic depth of the Spanish and Italian examples. This vase is a prominent 12.5 inches tall, and is a wonderful Victorian era collectible.

L2 RARE 1890s-1900s CLASSIC GREEK MAIDENS CONTINENTAL MAJOLICA FLARED JARDINIERE

Lot 2: L2 RARE 1890s-1900s CLASSIC GREEK MAIDENS CONTINENTAL MAJOLICA FLARED JARDINIERE

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: The Estate Road Show is proud to showcase this lot from the half century long Peterson collection of classic Majolica and porcelain. This Rare jardinière represents a second generation symmetrical 9.5 inch bulbous & flared scalloped rim form, adorned with classical dancing Greek maidens, complemented with stunning Rococo relief fans & palms. This beautiful jardiniere is definitely Continental and between 1890 and ca. 1910, due to the lite, almost wet wash appearance of the Robins egg blue ground, the bleeding of the green cover enamel, and the coral interior enamel, generally used after the 1880s. The base clay appears to be Kaolin rich, so we might place this lovely large jardinieres lineage in Eastern France, or Western Germany.

L7 RARE GEORG SCHMIDER FACTORIES ZELL GERMANY MAJOLICA PEACH BASKET WEAVE PLATE

Lot 7: L7 RARE GEORG SCHMIDER FACTORIES ZELL GERMANY MAJOLICA PEACH BASKET WEAVE PLATE

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: This Rare deep relief and brilliantly pastel enameled rustic peaches plate represents a fantastic example of one of six different fruit Majolica plates by Georg Schmider United Factories of Zell (Baden-Wuerttemberg / Germany), ca. 1910s. The base stamp is one that has been positively identified, and represents one of the American Phantoms from the early 20th century, L D B Co. Imports. L D B is known for their involvement with German & French Limoges porcelain, and this octagonal plate, with classic precise German basket weave mold definition, was brought to the USA during the period ca. 1910 to 1920. The Zweite Zeller Steingut- und Porzellanfabrik (1859 until 1897) was the second porcelain factory in the town of Zell am Harmersbach (Baden-Wuerttemberg / Germany), directly at the town gate in the Biberach and quickly became known as Lower Factory. One of the partners of the new company was a former employee of Haager, Hoerth & Co., Georg Schmider, who eventually accumulated all of the company shares by 1897. The newly named Steingut- und Porzellanfabrik Georg Schmider factory manufactured fine porcelain lines such as the Favorite, but achieved particular fame with the introduction of their Hahn und Henne (rooster and hen) decoration, which was created in 1898 by chief decorator Karl Schöner to commemorate the birth of his daughter. Not only did it become the most famous decoration style from the area, it is still the most used decoration style even today. Success was overwhelming and Schmider had to drastically increase his production capacity to cover demand, so he took over the company of 'Schaible & Co.' (founded 1872), directly followed by 'Haager, Hoerth & Co.' (founded 1818) in close succession during 1898, and renamed his company into the Vereinigte Zeller Fabriken Georg Schmider, (Georg Schmider United Factories of Zell). In 1899 both the Upper and Lower works were slightly damaged by a massive fire that broke out in the middle of the town, only to be followed by another blaze in 1904. But Schmider was not put off easily as his products were a constant success and in 1907 he was finally able to take over the Upper Factory from the Carl Schaaff Company. Over the years the items from the Zell works were exported to Africa, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Holland, France, India, Italy, Norway, Romania, Sweden, Switzerland and the United States. But not only self-marked items were sold; apparently quite a few goods were also sold as unbranded or customer-branded ware. One example would be from the period between 1907 and 1928 when the company sold at least one series of decorated but unmarked plates to the US importer L.D.B. & Co. from New York who also ordered items from other German & French companies like the Porzellanfabrik Moschendorf A.G., and Laviolette / Flambeau Limoges.

L26 SCARCE FRENCH 1890s SEPARATED GENTRY FIGURAL & FINGER RING MAJOLICA BUD VASE

Lot 26: L26 SCARCE FRENCH 1890s SEPARATED GENTRY FIGURAL & FINGER RING MAJOLICA BUD VASE

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: We proudly offer this Scarce Central to Southern French Majolica, likely 1880s free standing Louis XVI gentry figural before a modified short neck baluster vase, featuring finger ring handles. The overall theme is a rustic Poppies floral with a well molded rectangular plinth, a telltale Fleur de Lies on the vase reverse, and a traditional Turquoise interior glaze. This definitely French bud vase, sports a somewhat lesser exacting mold that matches the efforts ca. 1890 to 1900, however, the cover enamel is very well placed & brilliant, with virtually no bleed out. This quality static enamel, was a feature of earlier examples, ergo our 1880s attribution. The base tan buff clay precludes a Limoges region potting, and the potential AA or VV base impression we believe is a makers mark, as we could not anything comparable, even in Chaffers. This vase is a prominent 8.875 inch richly decorated 19th century treasure.

L28 ZEH SCHERZER, ROYAL MUNICH 1920s HP PORCELAIN GROUSE GAME BIRD WALL PLAQUE

Lot 28: L28 ZEH SCHERZER, ROYAL MUNICH 1920s HP PORCELAIN GROUSE GAME BIRD WALL PLAQUE

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: We proudly present this large 12.75 inch beautifully scalloped, hand painted & gilded Grouse game bird wall plaque potted by the respected Zeh Scherzer & Co., and decorated by the Royal Munich design studio. The professional attention to detail + the rich colored enamels of this 1920s masterpiece are just stunning. The Zeh, Scherzer & Co. was founded in 1880 at Rehau, Bavaria, Germany, producing a wide range of wares as well as fine decorated porcelain. The 1910s is considered the greatest period in company history, resulting in some of the most beautiful porcelain produced by Z & S, and giving the company a high-class reputation that was mentioned in the same breath together with other famous German manufacturers such as Hutschenreuther and Rosenthal. Royal Munich was a professional decorating studio that did work for several high end German potters, including both C.M. Hutschenreuther, and Zeh, Scherzer & Co. during the latter 19th and early part of the 20th century. A later mark in gold leaf indicates the studio was still in existence into the 1930s, but no evidence that we can find, confirms that Royal Munich survived the Second World War.

L30 RARE 18.5 IN SARREGUEMINES FRENCH PAYS BASQUE MAJOLICA FRUIT HARVEST STATUE

Lot 30: L30 RARE 18.5 IN SARREGUEMINES FRENCH PAYS BASQUE MAJOLICA FRUIT HARVEST STATUE

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: The next offering in our Magnificent Majolica collection is a Giant 18.5 inch tall statue representing a young fruit harvester offering us an apple. The style is decidedly French ca. 1880s, and by the pantaloons may be indicative of the Basque region (Pays Basque), of Southern France. There is a mold ID impression 1575, and we believe this piece to potentially be by Sarreguemines. It does not have traditional English mold definition, and although it could be German, our attribution is based upon three things. The gorgeous depth / hue of the lead cover enamels are classic Sarreguemines, and the staged, fully glazed base are also recognized traits. Lastly, if one looks closely, there is one rub that exposes the base clay, and it shows a white fired bisque. Other than the English white base Kaolin clay, this soft white Kaolin was found from Limoges, to Sarreguemines of the Mosell, Lorainne region of Eastern France. The region was transferred to Germany in 1871, with the Treaty of Frankfurt, following the Franco-Prussian War. From 1871 to 1918 it formed part of the German imperial province of Alsace-Lorraine. Following the annexation of the Moselle to Germany, Alexandre de Geiger (son-in-law of the fabled Paul Utzschneider) left Sarreguemines and retired to Paris in 1871. His son Paul de Geiger took over the management, and two new factories were constructed at Digoin and Vitry-le-François, remaining completely French. Both potteries had access to the Limoges Eastern white clay, but records indicate that perhaps only the factory at Vitry-le-Francois, closer in proximity to Sarreguemines + the German controlled Utzschneider plant, produced Majolica at the end of the 19th century.

Lot 33: L33 RARE 1906+ NORTHWOOD GLASS NU 31 BELLADONNA ROYAL BLUE HP COMPLETE WATER SET

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: We are proud to showcase this RARE style, size, and hand decorated water set, all wrapped into one magnificent Northwood #31 Belladonna Royal blue hand painted & gilded complete service ( pitcher + 6 flared tumblers) ca. 1906 to 1908. This first finished Belladonna pieces (ca. 1904) sported a lovely daisy theme, while ours, pictured in the 1906 Northwood catalog, is finished in a pretty prunus garland pattern with accenting Fleur de Lis. All of the Belladonna items carried the multiple gilt banding, evident here. Unlike any other Northwood pitcher, this mold has three bottom rim rows of beaded bands, and an incredibly lovely 12 pointed palm + leaf pattern on the base. The abortive gentle S recurved rim is also unique to Northwood pitchers, and a creamer can be seen on Page #91 of Harry Northwood The Wheeling Years 1901 â¿¿ 1925 / by William Heacock, James Measell, & Berry Wiggins. The 8.5 inch tall pitcher is SO RARE, that we can find no other photographic reference anywhere. This is truly a Northwood mold blown antique treasure!

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

This Water set represents a finely molded pitcher & (6) properly marked, gorgeous rich & deep Sapphire blue matching tumblers, in one of the most sought after of all Northwood patterns. Introduced in 1912, Northwood received a patent for the pattern in July of 1914, effectively blocking the attempt to sell an exact copy of the Peacock at the Fountain by Diamond Glass. The result was that the Diamond pattern was redesigned with extra foliage to differentiate the two. Both are highly collectible today, but there is always a premium for Northwood originals.
