Description: Two letters sent to Abd-el-Halim Aga, Governor of Safed, in view of the deterioration of the state of Jews in the Upper Galilee during the period following Ibrahim Pasha's rule. Safed, 1840-1841. Arabic. The first letter, of 1840, was written by Ahmed Zacharia Pasha, commander of Sidon and Tripoli's governor's army. He describes the complaints of Safed Jews regarding the occupation of houses, enslavement of people and confiscation of cattle, and orders the Governor of Safed to restore peace and serenity of Jewish life and provide them with security and defense. It is also mentioned in the letter that R'[Haim Nissim] Abulafia, is in charge of all of his community.The second letter, of April 1841, deals with the same matter. The writer (signature not clear) announces that a letter was received from R' Haim Abulafia concerning the appointment of two representatives of Safed Jewry - Haim Mizrahi and Haim Franco, and all requests towards the Jewish community have to be addressed to them. Translation of both letters appears in the book "Mechkarim U-Mekorot" by Yitzchak Ben-Zvi. (Edited by Zalman Shazar and Meir Benayahu). Yad Ben-Zvi publishing, Jerusalem, 1966. Description: A four-pages printed 'leaflet' containing general information about "Moshav Zekenim in Jerusalem" as well as its regulations. An illustration of the building appears on the upper side of the leaf and the verse "Do not cast me off in time of old age" (Psalms 71,9) in German. On the third page appear the institute's regulations: " Statutten des Verein's "Moschab Sekenim" In Jerusalem". The home for the elderly was founded in the Old city of Jerusalem in 1878 as a "Tea-House for the elderly" and developed throughout the years. In 1894 new buildings were constructed and it is possible that this leaflet was printed while the institute was being expanded. [4] pp, 29 cm. Fair-good condition. Description: "Beit Sefer Ivri", Yehuda Grasovsky. Jerusalem: "HaZvi" printing press, 1895-6. Parts 1 and 2. 1st edition.The first two volumes of "Beit Sefer Ivri", a Hebrew study book by Yehuda Gur (Grasovsky), of the earliest study books printed in Eretz Israel for educating children. Both volumes are dedicated, in print, to Kalonymus Ze'ev Wissotzky.Grasovsky (1862-1950), teacher, linguist, lexicographer, author and translator, of the first writers in Hebrew in Eretz Israel. Grasovsky acted to realize the vision of a Hebrew school. Following his arrival in 1887 he worked as a teacher in Mazkeret Batya where he was the first Hebrew teacher. At that period he organized with David Yudelevitch a convention of Hebrew teachers in Eretz Israel which was considered as the origin of the Teachers Union. In 1891 Grasovsky introduced the study of Hebrew in Hebrew at Zichron Ya'akov together with the teacher Chaim Ziprin. Later on he moved to Jaffa where he taught at first in Israel Belkind's school. When this school was closed down he taught in Alliance school for girls. Volume 1: [4], 3, 64, [1] pp. Volume 2: [4], 258 pp, 16 cm. Good condition. Staining. Description: HALEVI, Rabbi Eliezer. Massa Eliezer: Speech Delivered by Rabbi Eliezer HaLevi to His Brothers, Citizens of Vilnius, in the Presence of Minister Sir Moses Montefiore. Vilnius: Joseph Reuben Romm, 1847.Account of the author's trip, accompanying Sir Moses Montefiore to Vilnius in 1846 when the latter travelled to Russia in an attempt to persuade the authorities to alleviate persecution of the Jewish population. As mentioned in the introduction by Yekutiel Shapira, who brought the book to press, Massa Eliezer is a chapter from Shmuel Joseph Fuenn's 'Tiferet LeMoshe', on Sir Montefiore's trip. Fuenn's poem "In Honor of Sir Moses Montefiore" appears at the end of the book. The National Library copy contains 19 pages only, lacking the poem by Fuenn. 24pp, 16 cm. Good condition. Nine issues of the weekly "HaShavua HaPalestini", Hebrew weekly in Latin characters, edited by Itamar Ben-Avi. First year: issues 5, 8-13, 16-17 (double issue). Second year: issue 2-3.Itamar Ben-Avi (1882-1943), journalist and Zionist activist, son of the reviver of the Hebrew language Eliezer Ben-Yehudah. Ben-Avi was called "the first Hebrew child" - first child born in Eretz Israel of the modern times whose mother tongue was Hebrew. His parents taught him Hebrew when only a minority spoke or understood the language. Ben-Avi studied in the Alliance Teachers Seminary in Paris and in Berlin University. When he returned to Eretz Israel in 1904, he took part in the edition of his father's papers "HaZvi" and "HaOr", He continued his father's initiatives, both in the area of journalism and the development of the Hebrew language.Ben-Avi supported the international language Esperanto. Ben-Avi called for replacing the Assyrian Alphabet by the Latin one trying to facilitate the turning of Hebrew into a "Jewish Esperanto". Twice he tried to publish Hebrew weekly magazines in Latin characters - "HaShavua HaPalestini" and "Dror" which did not last long. Lot of 9 issues + two single leaves, 30 cm. Description: 1. Opening speech at the session of the council, Yonatan Ratosh. Published by the Council of the Coalition for Hebrew Youth, 1944. The speech delivered by Yonatan Ratosh at the convention of the "Coalition for Hebrew Youth" movement delegates. This speech became the major manifest of the Canaanite ideology. "The Council of the Coalition for Hebrew Youth" (the "Canaanites") was founded in 1939. The movement reached its peak in Eretz Israel during the 1940s, and impacted the course of political thought, art, literature and spiritual and cultural life in Israel. Its members attempted to directly link between the people who lived in Eretz Israel in the second millennium BCE and the Hebrew people in Eretz Israel of the 20th century, while trying to create a new-old culture and unchain Jewish tradition. The name "Canaanites" was given to the group, with certain irony, by poet Avraham Shlonsky. 50 pp, 16.5 cm. Good condition. Stains, covered fastened with adhesive tape.2. 2. Description: Documents dealing with the demand of the Yemenite settlers of HaShiloach village to return to their homes and be compensated for their looted or destroyed property since they were obliged to leave their homes by order of the authorities during the riots of 1936-1939. In spite of promises by the British Governor, the settlers returned to their homes only after the State of Israel was established.Amongst the documents: list of property taken from Yemenites' homes and demands for compensation; agreement regarding sale of land; letters to and from various national institutes (letters signed by Yitzchak Ben-Zvi) - requests for compensation and return to homes; correspondence concerning property ownership in HaShiloach village, etc. The lot also contains documents from 1967, when sixty Arab families from the Jewish Quarter in the Old City of Jerusalem were settled in Silwan and requests by HaShiloach village settlers to move into the Old City. Known as a researcher of Eretz Israel and the Arab Peninsula, he was considered one of the most important German Orientalists. In 1802 started a geographical research journey to Turkey, the Middle East and the Arab Peninsula. This journey lasted nine years. The first station was Constantinople. From there he continued to Izmir and Aleppo. While travelling he learned Arabic and got acquainted with the Arab life style. Later he visited Eretz Israel and Trans-Jordan. In the years 1806-1807 he stayed in the Dead Sea area and was the first to conduct scientific observations in the area. His journey ended in Yemen, where he was murdered by order of the Imam of Sana'a. During his journeys he purchased manuscripts and objects. Most of the collection was lost.
