JOSEF VON FÜHRICH, LITTLE GIRL WITH GUARDIAN ANGEL

Lot 1201: JOSEF VON FÜHRICH, LITTLE GIRL WITH GUARDIAN ANGEL

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Born in North Bohemia, Josef Führich first studied under his father before attending the School of Art, Prague, in 1819. After having obtained a scholarship in Rome Führich lived in the Eternal City from 1827 to 1829 and it is here that he joined the Nazarines. Along with Overbeck, Koch and Schnorr von Carolsfeld, Führich worked on the frescoes of the Casino Massimo. From 1829 the artist was again living in his native Bohemia before moving, in 1834, to Vienna where he was appointed curator of the Academy Gallery and later, in 1940, professor of historical composition. In 1861 Führich was knighted and in 1875 appointed as an honorary citizen of Vienna where he died in 1876. The oeuvre of Josef von Führichs includes almost exclusively religious subjects; predominantly altarpieces and depictions of Old and New Testament scenes. One of his most important works is the series of frescoes he painted inside the Lerchenfeld church of Vienna. In addition are the more romantic-religious images which he created, such as this large-scale work of a little girl with her guardian angel, painted in 1827, most likely before he relocated to Rome. The motif of the guardian angel was used by Führich in the previous year for a smaller work on copper which formed part of a larger cycle dedicated to Geneviève de Brabant, to whom Führichs also owed his scholarship in Rome. In the later work, all connotations of the legend have been removed and the painting instead focuses solely on the monumental scene of the girl with her guardian angel; brilliantly painted and in a fine polychrome palette. .

JOHANN THEODOR GOLDSTEIN, OPPENHEIM NEAR THE RIVER RHINE

Lot 1204: JOHANN THEODOR GOLDSTEIN, OPPENHEIM NEAR THE RIVER RHINE

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Johann Theodor Goldstein studied in Berlin where he was particularly influenced by Friedrich Schinkel; he subsequently demonstrated a preference for painting both Gothic and Greek architecture. In 1821 he moved to Dresden and found important clients in the Crown Prince Friedrich August II, Johann Gottlob von Quandt and Baron Speck von Sternburg. This painting depicts Oppenheim overlooking the Rhine valley, the gothic Church of St. Catherine and the ruins of the late 17th century castle, Landskron. Goldstein is interested in the link between Oppenheim and the outstanding Gothic church architecture on the Rhine.

FRANCOIS PASCAL, BARON GÉRARD, PORTRAIT OF A LADY

Lot 1205: FRANCOIS PASCAL, BARON GÉRARD, PORTRAIT OF A LADY

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: In 1786 Gérard joined the studio of David in Paris where he was supposedly a favourite pupil. His greatest artistic success came during the reign of Napoleon. For his first commission he created a series of large historical paintings which are now located in the Palace of Versailles. In addition, Gérard was also the official painter of state portraits of the first Empire and historian to the Bonaparte family. Later, he was sponsored by Louis XVIII, who knighted him in 1819. Since this painting is signed Baron Gérard, it is dateable between 1819 and 1837 when he died. Apart from the portraits of the Bonaparte family, the portraits of Isabey with his young daughter and also Madame Recamier, both in the Louvre, can be considered his most famous paintings.

JOHAN CHRISTIAN CLAUSEN DAHL, VIEW OF VESUVIUS FROM THE COAST OF CASTELLAMMARE

Lot 1206: JOHAN CHRISTIAN CLAUSEN DAHL, VIEW OF VESUVIUS FROM THE COAST OF CASTELLAMMARE

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: In his diary on 19th September 1820, Dahl recorded that he painted a small Tyrolean landscape for Frau Blome along with a landscape near Castellammare with Vesuvius. The following year, in 1821, Dahl once again uses this motif in a slightly larger work (61 x 97 cm) which also features a stormy sea with waves crashing up against rocks on the shore. The painting belongs to the University of Uppsala (No. 338). In 1820/21 Dahl travelled to Italy. During his stay in Naples, where he was a guest of the Danish Crown Prince, he succeeded in becoming one of the greatest landscape innovators at the beginning of the 19th century. During this stay his natural studies gained full freedom, becoming original and independent in their sensitivity to nature and overcoming the influence of the old Dutch masters. At this time his work was developing and he was becoming, as his first biographer Andreas Aubert explains, a "precursor to Corot, a Norwegian Constable."

JOHAN CHRISTIAN CLAUSEN DAHL, VIEW OVER THE BAY OF NAPLES WITH VESUVIUS

Lot 1207: JOHAN CHRISTIAN CLAUSEN DAHL, VIEW OVER THE BAY OF NAPLES WITH VESUVIUS

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: The stretcher to the reverse of the painting is inscribed "Dahl f. 1820" and could possibly be interpreted as a signature. The nighttime view depicts a terrace which when compared to his painting "Two men on a terrace near the Bay of Naples", painted only two days earlier on 14th August 1820 in Quisisana (Bang, op.cit., No. 217), enables the location of the scene to be determined. When his catalogue raisonné was published in 1987, the location of the composition was unknown. Marie Lodrup Bang, on seeing a photograph of the work, confirms that it can be identified with the work numbered 218 in her catalogue (letter dated 04.03.2013). In addition, Ernst Haverkamp, Oslo, knowing the original, also recognised the painting as being by Dahl.

Description: This painting was created soon after Rauch's arrival in Rome where he established himself in 1841, following a ten-year stay in Moscow, and where he died six years later. Characteristic of his finely painted works is the brilliantly luminous palette. Unfortunately, due to the somewhat dirty condition of this impressive animal painting, this characteristic is not apparent.

It was however after his return to Kassel that Ruhl travelled to Berlin in 1825 where he socialised with the likes of Armin, Eichendorff, Fouque, Rauch, Savigny, Humboldt and Gneisenau. In 1832 he became professor at Kassel Art Academy, and shortly thereafter was made director of the gallery of paintings. Our nighttime sleigh-ride was created during his early teaching years at the academy in Kassel.

HEINRICH BRANDES, VIEW OF THE COLOSSEUM IN ROME

Lot 1213: HEINRICH BRANDES, VIEW OF THE COLOSSEUM IN ROME

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Heinrich Brandes was born in Brunswick and studied from 1823 to 1825 at the Munich Academy. From 1830 he spent two years in Italy before returning to Brunswick. Brandes was initially influenced by the art of the Nazarenes and later the possibilities of painting en plein air during the Biedermeier period. The present work is likey related to the painting that was seen in 1833 at the Brunswick Art Association and that C. Braun, in his "Short Report on this year's local Art Exhibition", described as being a "[...] view of the Colosseum in Rome, the foreground with picturesque trees and ancient fragments. The works by this artist reveal deeply thoughtful studies of the nature [...]. "(Quoted in Spies, op., p. 49). Another view of the Roman Colosseum on fire was in the Bavarian State Painting Collection, it was exhibited in 1931 at the Munich Glass Palace where it was destroyed in a fire.

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Verso inscribed "Franz Friedrich / Wetzel. / zum Andenken. / für seinen Neffen u. Pathen / Herman. Vogel / gemalt von / C: Vogel. / Dresden 1827." bzw. „Christiane Sophia Wetzel / geb. Freiberg / geboren zu Dresden d. 11. Aug. 1775. / Carl Vogel. Pinx./ Dresden 1839." The format for the1827 portrait of Franz Friedrich Wetzel is likely to have been referred to in 1829 when painting his wife, Christiane Sophia. Carl Christian, since 1831 Vogel von Vogelstein, painted portraits of the in-laws of his brother, Franz Friedrich Vogel, who was married to Dorothea Christiane Wetzel. The two paintings were given to their son Hermann Vogel, the nephew of the painter, who was also a pharmacist, like his grandfather. Since then, the pair of paintings have been in the possession of the family.

WILHELM VON KAULBACH, ANIMALS FROM REINEKE FUCHS

Lot 1218: WILHELM VON KAULBACH, ANIMALS FROM REINEKE FUCHS

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: This drawing is one of the 36 leaves that Wilhelm von Kaulbach created as a template for the illustrations for Goethe's "Reineke Fuchs". The work was published in 1840 by Cotta in Stuttgart. Kaulbach worked for three years on this project and created a total of 36 main illustrations along with numerous smaller vignettes. The drawings, alluding to human weakness and the immorality of the nouveau riche and petty bourgeois, for example, widely mocked society of the time. The book was produced in several editions and was a great financial success. In particular, it furthered the popularity of this work by Goethe, which until then had been considered of lesser importance due to its dependence on an age-old fable.

JOSEPH KARL STIELER, PORTRAIT OF BARONESS GÜLDENSTRÖM

Lot 1224: JOSEPH KARL STIELER, PORTRAIT OF BARONESS GÜLDENSTRÖM

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Joseph Karl Stieler is considered the most important portraitist working in Munich during the first half of the 19th century. After having studied with Christoph Fessel in Würzburg and Heinrich Füger in Vienna, Stieler settled in Paris to complete his training with the classicist, Gérard. In 1812 he was called to Munich by King Maximilian of Bavaria and in 1820 was appointed court painter to Ludwig I, for whom he created not only coronation paintings but also the Gallery of Important Gentlemen and the Gallery of Beauties. In his handwritten record of sales dated 1857, Joseph Stieler refers to the portrait of Baroness von Güldenström as being his last paid commission: "Baroness Güldenström Portrait 30 Louis d'Or." This painting, as well as four additional portraits accounted for in 1856, of Baron and Baroness Prankh, Baroness Gumppenberg and Countess Almeida, was commissioned by Prince Carl of Bavaria, who is also mentioned in Rudolph Marggraff's memoirs on the artist published in 1858.

Description: The genre painter Ferdinand Minor was active in Munich from 1836 onwards. His oeuvre is somewhat limited and thus rarely appears on the market. Lot 1228: HIPPOLYTE FLANDRIN, attributed to, PORTRAIT OF COMTE CHARLES-MARIE-AUGUSTIN DE GOYON

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Emperor Napoleon III. appointed General Goyon as Commander of the French troops in Rome in 1856. The troops conquered the Roman church state on 3rd July 1849 and thus ended the Roman Republic after only three months of its proclamation. Goyon quickly gained the confidence of Pope Pius IX. (the last „Papa Rè", Papal King), and only a few months after his arrival on 10th June 1857 he was granted the Order of Pius. Goyon wears the order in this portrait and it can thus be used as a post quem for dating the work. The painter of the unsigned portrait could be Hippolyte Flandrin who also painted a portrait of Goyon's wife (Musèe Ingres, Montauban). One of the last portraits by Flandrin is of Napoleon III, painted in 1862 (today in Versailles).

AUGUST ALBERT ZIMMERMANN, ITALIAN LANDSCAPE

Lot 1230: AUGUST ALBERT ZIMMERMANN, ITALIAN LANDSCAPE

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Born in Zittau, the painter Albert Zimmermann studied in Dresden before settling in Munich in 1833. During this time he was guided by Carl Rottmann in particular. From 1857 to 1860 he was professor at the Milan Academy. It is not thought that he returned to Italy again and thus the painting was likely created during his time in Milan. Zimmermann preferred to paint large-scale works such as this; his "Landschaft auf der Bayerischen Hochebene" in the Frankfurt Städel is 170 x 208 cm and his "Walpurgisnacht" in Munich's Schack-Galerie 322 x 264 cm. Works by Zimmermann are also found in the Neue Pinakothek, Munich, as well as in the Victoria & Albert Museum, London.

HEINRICH GÄRTNER, ITALIAN LANDSCAPE WITH SHEPHERDESS, CHILDREN AND GOATS

Lot 1240: HEINRICH GÄRTNER, ITALIAN LANDSCAPE WITH SHEPHERDESS, CHILDREN AND GOATS

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Heinrich Gärtner studied under Wilhelm Schirmer at the art academy of Berlin and Ludwig Richter at the academy in Dresden. The poetic and beautiful landscapes that Gärtner painted, originally adopted from his teachers, were developed further when living in Rome between 1856 and 1866, to became heroic and historical paintings influenced by Joseph Anton Koch and Carl Rottmann. It was at this time of transition that the present painting was created. It depicts a shepherdess with children and animals in the foreground and two young walkers to the left, who could also be interpreted as an allusion to the many young German artists that, like Gärtner himself, travelled with great enthusiasm to the idealised Italian peninsula.

ANDREAS ACHENBACH, RETURN OF THE FISHERMAN

Lot 1243: ANDREAS ACHENBACH, RETURN OF THE FISHERMAN

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Andreas Achenbach established himself as "Master of land and sea" as described by Wolfgang Müller von Königswinter in his "Letter on Art History" in 1854, with his spectacular stormy seascapes of the 40s. These dramatic portrayals of the powerful forces of nature were, from the 40s, increasingly replaced by less dramatic Dutch and Belgian harbour and beach scenes. In these paintings, including this work dated 1863, the truthful depiction of reality is combined with a strong emphasis on the rendering of atmosphere. The composition of this painting extends out towards the sea, in the centre a fishing boat is depicted, awaited by the fisherman's wife on the shore. The relaxed posture of the woman with her pitcher and basket and the shoreline which extends along the bottom of the painting somewhat shields the viewer from the juxtaposed rough sea with the fisherman. The atmosphere of the sky is equally contrasting; the dark, heavy clouds and the bright warmth of the setting sun. Together with his younger brother Oswald, Andreas Achenbach belongs to some of the most coveted and influential German painters of the second half of the 19th century.

Description: This large-scale landscape presumably depicts the Inn Valley in the Kaiser mountain region, often painted by Heinrich Funk, for example in the painting in Frankfurt's Städel-Museum and the work illustrated in the Dictionary of the Düsseldorf School of Painting, vol. 1., p. 386. From 1830-1835, Heinrich Funk studied at the Düsseldorf Academy with Schirmer and Lessing. The Rhenish late-Romanticism demonstrated by these artists had a continuing impact on his work. After a stay in Munich, where he became acquainted with the works of the Rottmann circle, Funk moved to Frankfurt in 1836. From there he continued to undertake scholarly trips to the Alps and the surrounding regions. In 1854 he became professor for landscape painting at the Stuttgart Art Academy, a position that he resigned from in 1876. Dated 1866, our painting was created during his Stuttgart years and reflects not only the characteristic style of Schirmer but also the influence of Munich atmospheric painting. Apart from an approximately 5 cm long retouched tear to the upper right edge, the painting is in very good condition. In need of cleaning.
