A signature, executed in brown script is seen along the lower edge, left of center with date. It is partially obscured by frame. The painting exhibits significant drying crackle. It is fairly narrow though extensive in the background. In the left most round fruit (an orange or yellow apple) some of the paint appears blanched and the paint/glaze of the shadow is disrupted by the alligatoring revealing the red paint below. The paint is well adhered to the support and ground and is not flaking. A tiny paint loss from impact or scratch is found above the left-most fruit. In UV light the painting has a dark green fluorescence indicating a natural resin possibly mixed with oil. The painting was somewhat selectively cleaned reducing the discolored varnish over the fruits, paper wrapper and table and leaving it in the dark background. The amount of retouching is difficult to discern as the painting in UV is overall quite dark. There may be some retouching of the drying crackle in the upper right background (or it may be the paint below that appears dark due to lack of varnish there as the paint moved). There is some retouching of the left fruit and some minor reinforcement of the stems of the dried grapes. Descriptions provided in both printed and on-line catalogue formats do not include condition reports. The absence of a condition statement does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition or completely free from wear and tear, imperfections or the effects of aging. Lot 24: FREDERICK DEBOURG RICHARDS, (AMERICAN 1822-1903), "THE GLORY OF THE ALLEGHENIES"

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: FREDERICK DEBOURG RICHARDS (american 1822-1903)/span "THE GLORY OF THE ALLEGHENIES" Signed and dated 'F. Deb Richards 1867' bottom left, oil on canvas 54 x 84 in. (137.2 x 213.4cm) provenance: /spanPrivate Collection, Pennsylvania.

Condition Report: Generally good overall condition, with the vast majority of the painting unrestored and housed in the (apparently) original frame with a plaque denoting the artist and subject matter. The canvas is relined and there is some restoration. The lower right quadrant of the painting is in fine overall condition; the large mountain at right appears to be unrestored. The most prominent restorations are an approx. 3 3/4 x 6 inch 'L' shaped repaired vertical tear in the sky at upper center, an approx. 3 1/2 inch vertical tear in part of mountains and extending into part of sky at center left, and an approx. 1/2 inch long tear in part of mountains. Otherwise there is some restoration along part of top edge of canvas, a minor abraded loss at outer left edge lower center and missing chip of paint (the latter two largely unobtrusive), along with areas of generally minor, localized restoration in parts of foliage, sky and specific areas of mountain range. The overall appearance of the painting is that it is in original condition, and apart from the two larger tears noted, the smaller areas of restoration are not (arguably) aesthetically off putting. Descriptions provided in both printed and on-line catalogue formats do not include condition reports. The absence of a condition statement does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition or completely free from wear and tear, imperfections or the effects of aging. Description: LOUIS ASTON KNIGHT (american 1873-1948)/span BY THE RIVER Signed and inscribed 'Louis Aston Knight/Paris' bottom left, oil on canvas 59 3/4 x 79 in. (151.8 x 200.7cm) provenance: /spanPrivate Collection, Ohio. note:/span This painting hung in the Mansion of Historic Batsto Village, Wharton State Forest, New Jersey, from the early 1970's to early 2013.

Condition Report: Overall good condition, does not appear to be relined and with no evidence of restoration under u.v. light. The canvas has uneven rippling/undulations and is likely in need of being restretched. The canvas has areas of craquelure and crazing, with the latter being most prominent in lower portions of the painting (and in the case of the greenish hues at right in the water, the crazing patterns appear closer to alligatoring). There is an approx. two inch tear with losses in the water with a small amount of associated paint loss. Description: WILLIAM MERRITT CHASE (american 1849-1916)/span "PORTRAIT OF MRS. G" Oil on canvas 52 x 38 1/2 in. (132.1 x 97.8cm) c. 1888 [Pisano OP.162] provenance: /spanThe Sitter. By descent in the family. Private Collection, Ohio. exhibited:/span "63rd Annual Exhibition." The National Academy of Design. New York. 1888. literature:/span "National Academy of Design 63rd Annual Exhibition." Daily Tribune. March 31, 1888, pp. 4-5. "National Academy of Design 63rd Annual Exhibition." Sun. April 3, 1888, pg. 16. "The Academy Exhibition." Nation. April 19, 1888. pp. 330-31. "Spring Exhibition of the Academy and the Society." Art Review 3 no.1 [July - August 1888] pg. 31. note:/span This painting depicts Cornelia Rogers Huntington Greer (b. 1836) and was likely commissioned given that Chase also completed a portrait of Greer's son Colbert (OP. 145). This painting was originally dated circa 1912 based on information provided by descendants of the sitter. However, several reviews of a work entitled Portrait of Mrs. G. that was exhibited once during the artist's lifetime - at the Spring Exhibition at the National Academy of Design in 1888 - suggest an earlier date, as they seem to be describing the present portrait of Mrs. Greer. A critic for the New York Daily Tribue writes "Mr. Chase's portrait of an elderly lady seated in a fur-trimmed blue robe, seen against a hanging of a very pale blue, is a picture which has earned its honorable place not only by the cleverness of coloring, but also by the firmness and strength of the modeling." (New York Daily Tribune[March 31, 1888];4-5). A writer for the New York Sun comments, "More should be said for the portrait of an elderly lady in a dark blue gown against a curtain of lighter blue" ([New York]Sun, April 3, 1888, 16). A rave review and further description of the work is given in the Nation, which describes it as "dignified, of excellent style, and showing the artist's appreciation of quiet tones and his ability to harmonize the figure and costume, with the accessories, in a complete ensemble at its best" (Nation, April 19, 1888, 331). Finally, another critic discussing the exhibition writes that the Portrait of Mrs. G has been "treated with an eye to color likewise, but in a much quieter and more wholesome manner. There is more of the character of the sitter about it, and a reasonable concession to the needs of good portrait painting" (Art Review, July-August 1888, 31). Further supporting the date circa 1888 is that Chase painted the portrait of Greer's son Colbert circa 1886: it seems likely that he would have executed both portraits at around the same time. A further consideration is the age of the sitter, who would have been seventy-six years old in 1912 (the original dating), though in the portrait she appears to be much closer to the fifty-two years of age she would have been in 1888. (Pisano, Ronald G., The Complete Catalogue of Works of Known and Documented Works by William Merritt Chase vol. 2. pg. 82). The lot will be accompanied by ephemera relating to the sitter.

Condition Report: Generally good overall condition, with most of painting unrestored and in original condition. The canvas is relined and there is some general minor restoration visible under u.v. light. Figure's nose at left, part of chin, area below her belt and part of right arm with very precise retouch. There is some restoration in parts of the background at left. Parts of the bottom of painting with pigments that give some fluorescence under u.v. light. We believe the latter, including an area of figure's dress near lower left corner, are likely due to the nature of the pigments, rather than due to restoration. Descriptions provided in both printed and on-line catalogue formats do not include condition reports. The absence of a condition statement does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition or completely free from wear and tear, imperfections or the effects of aging. Interested bidders are strongly encouraged to request a condition report on any lots upon which they intend to bid, prior to placing a bid. Description: JOHN SINGER SARGENT (american 1856-1925)/span PORTRAIT OF LADY CYNTHIA BLANCHE MOSLEY (née Curzon) Signed and dated 'John Singer Sargent 1921' bottom right, charcoal on paper 24 x 17 5/8 in. (61 x 44.5cm) provenance: /spanThe Sitter. By descent in the family. The Estate of Rubert Forbes Adam. Sold under instruction from the executors of his estate. note:/span The sitter was the daughter of George Nathaniel Curzon, who would later be named Marquess Curzon of Kedleston and Viceroy of India. His wife was Mary Leiter, of the Leiter family of Chicago, known for their vast real estate holdings. Mary Leiter's father, Levi Leiter, co-founded Marshall Field & Company. The year prior to sitting for Sargent, Lady Cynthia married Oswald Mosley, M.P., later the 6th Baronet. A favorite subject of the press due to her looks and glamorous dress, Lady Mosley first campaigned with her husband but later struck out on her own winning a seat in Parliament by a vast majority in 1929. While in Parliament, she was a great champion of women's rights. The Lady Mosley followed her husband as he left the Labour Party in 1930 and formed a new party that would later become the British Union of Fascists. Though Oswald's views were becoming increasingly extreme, Cynthia stood by him through it all, including joining he and Mussolini at a Fascist Party parade in Rome. The Lady Mosley developed peritonitis following an appendix operation in 1933 and passed away that year at the young age of 34. A number of family members also sat for Sargent, including Cynthia's aunt Daisy Leiter and Lord Curzon.
