Inscribed with title, numbered ''5'' and ''59'' and stamped twice with the artist''s atelier stamp ''ATELIER RAOUL DUFY'' verso, watercolor on paper 19 13/16 x 24 3/8 in. (50.3 x 62cm) provenance: Galerie Motte, Geneva, sale of November 10, 1956. Galerie Motte, Geneva, sale of May 25, 1963, lot 81. Galerie Motte, Geneva, sale of July 1, 1973, lot 429. II, p.37, no. 1157, (illustrated). Christopher Buckley, "The Highlander: Aboard Malcolm S. Forbes'' Remarkable Yacht," in the Architectural Digest, January, 1987, p. 106 (illustrated).

Condition Report: With time, light and mat staining, paper significantly toned and colors likely attenuated. With pin prick foxing present, specifically in two places center left, to the left of the white swatch, and in two places in the top left corner. With two pale brown stains, measuring approx 1 cm in this area as well. With some wear/ cracking to the yellow paint in the center, where the paint itself is thickest. Also slightly visible is a faint indentation of the letter S and O in this yellow portion where it intersects with the top edge of the blue ocean- almost as if someone had written something on a piece of painting on top of the painting itself. Verso, further evidence of toning- the whole back is darker with the exception of a few areas that are ligher, consistent with the imagery recto (the outline of the mast of the ship for example). There are also 5 additional areas throughout the back that are lighter in appearance (ask department for photos) and an area bottom center that has a chalky appearance. There is discoloration at all sheet edges and old brown paper tape remains verso bordering all four sides approx 1/2 to 1 inch wide that stains through to the front, as well as a 1 inch circular brown stain that shows through to the bottom left corner recto. Additional tape remnants present beneath the brown paper tape in two places along the top horizontal edge, one measuring approx 3 inches and the other measuring approx 4 inches long. Also one in the center of the bottom horizontal edge measuring 1 inch long. Also with scattered paint flecks verso, most likely the result of the working method of the artist. With the atelier stamp present in two places- at the top right corner and the bottom right corner. Also in top right corner, inscribed in pencil is 'No. 5 / Abord du Queen Mary / No. 59'. The number 0869 is also inscribed in pencil bottom right corner and feels like its been previously covered with a wax material that shows through to the front- as mentioned above. Descriptions provided in both printed and on-line catalogue formats do not include condition reports. The absence of a condition statement does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition or completely free from wear and tear, imperfections or the effects of aging. Interested bidders are strongly encouraged to request a condition report on any lots upon which they intend to bid, prior to placing a bid.
