Sale Notes:
This catalog features rare, antique and decorative books as well as select additions of art and ephemera. Highlighted is an impressive array of rare books including early Quaker-related material. We will also offer two collections, one themed around gardening and landscape architecture and another including books from the estate library of Abe and Betty Ajay, including many author inscriptions and personal notes. Many author-signed books from other consignments will also be sold featuring celebrated figures such as Bayard Taylor, Chaim Weizmann, Louis Untermeyer, Buzz Aldrin, Richard Nixon, Joseph Hergesheimer and a number of others. Many offerings in this catalog present important bound volumes of 19th and 20th century journals. We will also present a quantity of new and antique nautical titles, focused on seafaring history and ship modeling.

Antique and rare books in this catalog feature numerous important titles, including a pleasing selection of early American works. Among the earliest examples are William Denham's "The Artificial Clock-Maker," printed in the year 1700 with fold-out plates, the 1829 first edition of Hugh Murray's "Historical Account of Discoveries and Travels in North America," published in two volumes, and the 1764 first American edition of Markham and Jeffries' "The Citizen and Countryman's Experienced Farrier." Highlights among the early Quaker works are led by the 1704 first edition of Charles Marshall's "Sion's Travellers Comforted and the Disobedient Warned," and the 1806 first American edition of Thomas Clarkson's "A Portraiture of Quakerism," published in three volumes. Additional antique offerings come from collections themed around Pennsylvania history, the American Civil War and travel & exploration.

Found throughout this catalog are pleasing groups of art, ephemera and magazines. Of particular note is a wide variety of magazine issues and bound volumes of periodicals. These include important American time periods from the 19th century, such as the American Civil War, as well as several very rare volumes from the 20th which chronicle events such as the Nazi movement growth and their occupation of neighboring lands. Other specialty publications include cultural titles including Godey's Magazine with its signature fashion plates. The artwork offerings are led by an original watercolor by Ida Waugh featuring a pleasing vignette of a mother and babe, in the artist's classic style.

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Title: A Vision of Thoreau. With His 1849 essay: Civil Disobedience. Woodcuts by Antonio FrasconiAuthor: Henry David Thoreau - Henry David Thoreau was an American author, poet, philosopher, abolitionist, naturalist, tax resister, development critic, surveyor, historian, and leading transcendentalist. He is best known for his book Walden, a reflection upon simple living in natural surroundings, and his essay Civil Disobedience, an argument for individual resistance to civil government in moral opposition to an unjust state.Thoreau's books, articles, essays, journals, and poetry total over 20 volumes. Among his lasting contributions were his writings on natural history and philosophy, where he anticipated the methods and findings of ecology and environmental history, two sources of modern day environmentalism. His literary style interweaves close natural observation, personal experience, pointed rhetoric, symbolic meanings, and historical lore, while displaying a poetic sensibility, philosophical austerity, and "Yankee" love of practical detail. He was also deeply interested in the idea of survival in the face of hostile elements, historical change, and natural decay; at the same time he advocated abandoning waste and illusion in order to discover life's true essential needs. He was a lifelong abolitionist, delivering lectures that attacked the Fugitive Slave Law while praising the writings of Wendell Phillips and defending abolitionist John Brown. Thoreau's philosophy of civil disobedience influenced the political thoughts and actions of such later figures as Leo Tolstoy, Mohandas Gandhi, and Martin Luther King, Jr.Publisher: Self-publishedCity: South Norwalk, ConnecticutYear: 1965Printing Information: Signed EditionBinding Style: HardcoverPagination: UnpaginatedWidth: 5.75" Height: 7.75"Book Details: Condition / Notes: This is a scarce edition of Thoreau's work illustrated and signed by recently-deceased prize-winning woodcut artist Antonio Frasconi. Description: Title: The Life of William Penn, Compiled from the Usual Authorities and Also Many Original ManuscriptsAuthor: William Penn - William Penn was an English real estate entrepreneur, philosopher, and founder of the Province of Pennsylvania, the English North American colony and the future Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. He was an early champion of democracy and religious freedom, notable for his good relations and successful treaties with the Lenape Indians. Under his direction, the city of Philadelphia was planned and developed. In 1681, King Charles II handed over a large piece of his American land holdings to William Penn to satisfy a debt the king owed to Penn's father. This land included present-day Pennsylvania and Delaware. Penn immediately sailed to America and his first step on American soil took place in New Castle in 1682. On this occasion, the colonists pledged allegiance to Penn as their new Proprietor, and the first general assembly was held in the colony. Afterwards, Penn journeyed up river and founded Philadelphia. However, Penn's Quaker government was not viewed favorably by the Dutch, Swedish, and English settlers in what is now Delaware. They had no "historical" allegiance to Pennsylvania, so they almost immediately began petitioning for their own Assembly. In 1704 they achieved their goal when the three southernmost counties of Pennsylvania were permitted to split off and become the new semi-autonomous colony of Lower Delaware. As the most prominent, prosperous and influential "city" in the new colony, New Castle became the capital. As one of the earlier supporters of colonial unification, Penn wrote and urged for a Union of all the English colonies in what was to become the United States of America. The democratic principles that he set forth in the Pennsylvania Frame of Government served as an inspiration for the United States Constitution. As a pacifist Quaker, Penn considered the problems of war and peace deeply, and included a plan for a United States of Europe ("European Dyet, Parliament or Estates") in his voluminous writings.Editor: Mary HughsPublisher: Carey, Lea & Carey, and 8 othersCity: PhiladelphiaYear: 1828Binding Style: HardcoverPagination: 224 pagesWidth: 4.5" Height: 7"Book Details: Condition / Notes: Antique volume is bound in quarter leather over marbled paper-covered boards, with stamped gilt lettering to spine.
