Sale Notes:
This catalog features rare, antique and decorative books as well as select additions of art and ephemera. Highlighted is an impressive array of rare antique books including decorative sets and important printings. We will offer numerous author-signed books featuring celebrated authors and figures such as Amelia Earhart, Edward Gorey, Jimmy Carter, Carl Sandburg, Nicholas Sparks, Ludwig Bemelmans and a number of others. This catalog also offers an array of brand new books concerning ship modeling and single volume and group lots of various historical titles, including military topics such as the American Civil War.

Antique and rare books in this catalog feature numerous important titles. Among the earliest examples are Pierre Bayle's "A General Dictionary Historical and Critical," printed during the years 1734-1741 and complete in ten volumes, the 1800 first edition of Lazzaro Spallanzani's landmark medical text, "Experiences sur la Circulation Observee dans l'Universalite du Systeme Vasculaire," and numerous bound volumes of "Gentleman's Magazine," published between 1800 and 1809. Leading the field of signed material is an exciting example from Amelia Earhart. Signatures by the celebrated aviator are scarce in any form and this offering includes a copy of the book, "20 Hrs. 40 Min." in the original dustjacket and bearing a personal inscription from Earhart, and accompanied by a typed letter, also signed by her. Additional antique offerings come from collections themed around New York & Massachusetts history, vintage & antique academic yearbooks, the American Civil War, history, theology, literature, vintage and antique childrens' and many other subjects.

Found throughout this catalog are pleasing groups of art and ephemera. Leading the artwork is a period oil on canvas signed "Childe Hassam," displaying the pyramids of Giza. An intriguing ephemera lot features an original 16th or 17th century document on vellum with duplicate wax seals, referencing family names important to the early founding of Connecticut. Other ephemera lots include a variety of types of items.

Samuel Johnson's first regular employment as a writer was with The Gentleman's Magazine.Cave's innovation was to create a monthly digest of news and commentary on any topic the educated public might be interested in, from commodity prices to Latin poetry. It carried original content from a stable of regular contributors, as well as extensive quotes and extracts from other periodicals and books. Cave, who edited The Gentleman's Magazine under the pen name "Sylvanus Urban", was the first to use the term "magazine" (meaning "storehouse") for a periodical. Contributions to the magazine frequently took the form of letters, addressed to "Mr. Urban". The iconic illustration of St John's Gate on the front of each issue (occasionally updated over the years) depicted Cave's home, in effect, the magazine's "office".To inspect and acquire more detailed information about this lot, please attend our live preview before the auction.
