Description: WILLIAM H. BRADLEY (1868-1932) THE CHAP BOOK / THANKSGIVING NO. 1895. 21x14 inches, 53 1/4x35 1/2 cm. Condition B+ / B: horizontal fold; tears and creases at edges, some affecting image. Paper. Framed. Bradley, whose American Art Nouveau style was a combination of Aubrey Beardsley and the work of the Arts and Crafts movement, strove "to introduce good design and taste into everyday life" (Kiehl p. 15). The Chap Book was the first of a spate of late 19th century literary and art magazines. As an indication of how closely Bradley was associated with the Art Nouveau movement, this and several of his other posters were included in the show that marked the opening of Siegfried Bing's Salon de l'Art Nouveau on December 26, 1895. This poster was so popular with collectors that it was out of print in less than two months. Kiehl 23, DFP-I 151, Reims 1141, Modern Poster 6, Margolin p. 98, Weill 121, Maitres 1900 p. 111, Koch p. 8, Virginia p. 55.

MAXFIELD PARRISH (1870-1966). THE CENTURY / MIDSUMMER HOLIDAY NUMBER. 1897. 19x11 inches, 49x30 cm. Thomas A. Wylie Lithographing Co.

Lot 34: MAXFIELD PARRISH (1870-1966). THE CENTURY / MIDSUMMER HOLIDAY NUMBER. 1897. 19x11 inches, 49x30 cm. Thomas A. Wylie Lithographing Co.

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: MAXFIELD PARRISH (1870-1966) THE CENTURY / MIDSUMMER HOLIDAY NUMBER. 1897. 19 1/4x11 3/4 inches, 49x30 cm. Thomas A. Wylie Lithographing Co. Condition B+: restoration along vertical and horizontal folds; repaired tears at edges; creases through upper left corner. Matted and framed. Most famous for his children's book illustrations, Parrish was nonetheless a "remarkable draughtsman, who energetically and successfully mixed fantasy and reality to create a luminous dreamworld that, for all its strangeness, is precisely rendered" (Parrish intro). He studied Art at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and later, at the Drexel Institute under Howard Pyle. His posters were more illustrative and detailed than those of Edward Penfield and Will Bradley, and marked by what Charles Hiatt referred to as "curious individuality." Parrish won second prize in the Century's 1896 poster contest with this entry. He might very well have won first (which went to J.C. Leyendecker), but "entries had been restricted to three colors, and Parrish, an avid experimenter with the new half-tone process, employed five" (Margolin p. 20). Kiehl 134, DFP-I 317, Margolin p. 19 and 51, Maitres pl. 123, Virginia p. 6, Weill 126, Femme 67, Power 182.

Lot 38: DESIGNER UNKNOWN. LA GRAND ROUE DE PARIS. 1899. 50x36 inches, 129x93 cm. J. Barreau, Paris.

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: DESIGNER UNKNOWN LA GRAND ROUE DE PARIS. 1899. 50 3/4x36 3/4 inches, 129x93 1/4 cm. J. Barreau, Paris. Condition B+: offsetting and discoloration in image; repaired tears and creases in margins and image; vertical and horizontal folds. A gigantic Ferris wheel, La Grande Roue, was one of the main attractions of the 1900 Paris World's Fair. Standing 106 meters high and able to accommodate 1500 people at a time, the machine was a technological tour-de-force. A marvel of engineering, it was comparable to the Eiffel Tower that was built for the 1889 Fair. Once the 1900 Fair ended, the city of Paris debated keeping La Grande Roue as a permanent fixture of the city's skyline. However, eventually it was sold to the city of Vienna, where it remains standing to this day. In an inventive, fetching and sexually kitschy manner, the artist represents the wheel being supported by two scantily clad giants against the background of a panoramic silhouetted skyline, as would be seen by visitors atop the wheel itself. This is the larger format.

Description: F. HUGO D'ALESI (1849-1906) EXPOSITION DU CENTENAIRE DE LA LITHOGRAPHIE. 1895. 61x44 inches, 155x111 3/4 cm. Courmont Freres, Paris. Condition B: repaired tears, restoration and overpainting in margins and image. Mounted on board. Framed. To announce an exhibition celebrating the first 100 years of lithography, the Galerie Rapp commissioned four artists to design posters for the event: Puvis de Chavannes, Pal, Paul Maurou and Hugo d'Alesi. Curiously, of the three posters, only the one by Puvis de Chavannes actually includes the date of the exhibition. This rare/span image by d'Alesi is a stunningly-colored, atmospheric scene of a woman shopping for lithographs in one of the book stalls along the Seine River. In a charming, referential nod to the father of modern lithography, Jules Cheret's 1894 poster for Madame Sans Gene is hanging in front of her as she admires a lithograph by Nicolas-Toussaint Charlet. Maitres pl. 66, DFP-II 16, Reims 115, Abdy p. 2.

Description: PIERRE BONNARD (1867-1947) LES PEINTRES GRAVEURS. 1895. 25 3/4x19 inches, 65 1/2x48 1/2 cm. A. Clot, [Paris.] Condition B+: minor restored losses and restoration at edges; repaired tears, some affecting image. This poster advertises an exhibition that Ambroise Vollard organized to launch his first portfolio, L'Album des Peintres Graveurs, which established him as one of the finest, most influential printers in Paris. Depicting an intimate scene of a woman seated alone and admiring a print, Bonnard only uses three colors. Masterfully using the blank paper, he plays a sophisticated game with the solid color masses of the background. The typography is most ingeniously handled, presented in a black-and-white fashion that would not be seen again until the avant-garde posters of the 1930s. Bouvet 38, DFP-II 78, Modern Poster p. 8, Gold 184.
