Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Woven silk portrait of Napoleon, leading his army across the Alps during the Italian campaign of 1800...he was following the footsteps of Hannibal across the St. Bernard pass, and shortly thereafter achieved a major victory at the Battle of Marengo. This framed portrait represents the finest quality index weaving and was purchased in 1982 at the Jacquard Weaving Museum in Lyon, France. It was most likely woven at the Bianci silk mills in Italy which are not that far away in the Como district...the vertical threads are white, and the horizontal threads are black, and the entire composition is created with shades of grey... Sophisticated bidders will quickly recognize this image as the ad often used by Courvoisier Cognac, which is actually taken from the original heroic painting by Jacques-Louis David... This portrait is nicely framed, 13" x 15" and the sight size is "7.25" x 9"...excellent condition and ready for display...

Bayonet for a Ross Rifle

Lot 39: Bayonet for a Ross Rifle

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Bayonet, with original scabbard, for a Ross rifle...the Ross rifle was designed by a Canadian and issued to the Canadian Army in WW I but it did not adapt well to the realities of combat as it was not easy to clean and was at risk of exploding if not re-assembled correctly...likewise, there are stories of the bayonet falling off during live fire, so altogether, the Ross story was pretty humorous--as long as you were toting an Enfield... This bayonet is well marked "Ross Rifle Company, Quebec, Patented 1907" and has several proof marks as well...look closely at the 6 notches on the base of the wooden handle...that could be someone keeping score of combat incidents, or maybe how many times the rifle was successfully fired... Both bayonet and scabbard are in very good condition...total length is 16"...length of the blade is 10"...
