Auction Description for The Book Barn: Antique & Collectible Books-Art-Paper Civil War, Antique Reference, Outsider & Harper's Weekly Art, etc
Auction Description:
This is our first auction on Invaluable Auctions. We try to put in each auction a crosssection of both collectible material as well as material for the casual reader/buyer. We do not use reserves, our Starting Bids act as our defacto reserve. We want to sell as much as we can by the legitimate auction process, not by some "auction-as-a-fixed-price-reserve-sale" process. There are no games, gimmicks, smoke & mirrors played. Our motto is, and always has been, "an empty shelf is a happy shelf."   Come empty our shelves & make them (and us) happy! We welcome bidder questions regarding any lot posted any any time, but caution that in the last two hours on the sale day we cannot promise a timely answer since that day is usually very hectic.   Thank you for your consideration of our material & any participation in our auction.   Ann & Harry Polizzi The Book Barn

Our lack of storage is your opportunity to buy material at a low price. Antique 19th Century Scientific Periodical. 1884 issue of "Popular Science Monthly" published in NYC beginning in 1872 & still in existence as "Popular Science." Volume XXVI; Number I; November 1884. "Founded in 1872 by Edward Youmans to disseminate scientific knowledge to the educated layman. There was a great Tsunami of Scientific invention & investigation in the late 19th Century in both America & Europe. The public became interested in these marvelous new wonders & wanted information understandable to the interested layman, about them, which periodicals like Popular Science Monthly" were founded to satisfy. Youmans had previously worked as an editor for the weekly "Appleton's Journal" and persuaded them to publish his new journal. Early issues were mostly reprints of English scientific periodicals. "Popular Science Monthly" became an American outlet for the writings and ideas of the "new" sciences & inventions of Charles Darwin, Thomas Henry Huxley, Louis Pasteur, Henry Ward Beecher, Charles Sanders Pierce, William James, Thomas Edison, John Dewey and James McKeen Cattell. This issue is November 1884. It is loaded with scientific discoveries of that day. Illustrated with B&W engravings. The last pages contain advertisements of all sorts, some with engraved illustrations. This issue contains an early medical treatise by William A, Hammond entitled: "The relations between the Mind and the Nervous System." It was not until the late 1800's that medicine began to see that mental disorders could be treated by medicine & began to explore the relationship between the mind & the nervous system. Thus began the new medical practice of psychiatry. An article by J. B. Craighead: "The Future of the Negro in the South," explores the plight of the American Negro in the former Slave states since their emancipation after the Civil War. In the typical racist view of that day he concludes the Negro is only marginally better off than in slavery, but his OWN "mental & moral deficiencies" cause this miserable existence! "Popular Science Monthly" was published continuously from 1872 to the present. Scattered stains to front/back covers/light age toning to paper but not brittle/starting at spine creases. Overall Good Condition. In all approximately 144 pages including index plus 24 pages of ads at rear. ALL ITEMS ARE GUARANTEED TO BE ACCURATELY DESCRIBED, NOT DEFECTIVE, & GENUINE. Overall Good Plus Condition. Tobias Lear (1762-1816) is best known as the personal secretary to President George Washington Lear served Washington from 1784 until the former-President's death in 1799. Lear also served as President Thomas Jefferson’s peace envoy in the Mediterranean during the 1st & 2nd Barbary Wars. He was responsible for negotiating a peace that ended the first Barbary War. Lear was married for the 3rd time to Frances Dandridge Henley). In a last-minute change, the Lears were reassigned to the USS Constitution from the USS Philadelphia and when the USS Philadelphia ended up being captured at Algiers, ironically, Lear became the primary negotiator for the crew's release in 1805 with the treaty that ended the 1st Barbary War. Lear was alleged to have mishandled the treaty negotiations that resulted in the treaty. Lear stayed on in Algiers until 1812 when he fell out of favor with the ruling Dey. In 1816, Lear apparently committed suicide by shooting himself with a pistol. The specific reasons for his suicide are unknown, but some historians believe he committed suicide due to being vilified by the media for his decision to mistakenly accept the terms of the negotiations with Tripoli. ANTIQUE 1876 Thomas Nast Full Page Harper's Weekly Cartoon

Estimate: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Antique 1876 Thomas Nast Woodblock Art, signed in image. Thomas Nast Full Page Woodblock Political Cartoon From December 23, 1876 Issue of Harper's Weekly. Interior Page woodblock cartoon, of that Harper's Weekly issue. It is suitable for framing. Image Titled: "CAESAR, NOW BE STILL" with satiric Anti-Democratic Party content as shown in scan(s). 1876 was a presidential election year, which would end in the disputed Hayes-Tilden election struggle. This panel depicts the ongoing struggle as to who really won the presidency; Hayes or Tilden. Nast raises the speculation that Tilden would as depicted throw himself on his sword as the Romans of old when he found he had lost the election. In this Nast was being eerily predictive. Tilden should have won the 1876 election, but electoral votes from the former Confederate States were disputed---shades of the hanging chad---and in a political deal agreed to by both parties, Hayes got the votes in return for withdrawing remaining Union troops from those states & thereby ending Reconstruction government. An informal deal was struck to resolve the dispute: the Compromise of 1877, which awarded all 20 electoral votes to Hayes. In return for the Democrats' acquiescence to Hayes's election, the Republicans agreed to withdraw federal troops from the South to end the Reconstruction Era of the United States. The Compromise effectively ceded power in the Southern states to the Democratic Redeemers, who went on to pursue their agenda of returning the South to a political economy resembling that of its pre-war condition, including the disenfranchisement of black voters. The image measures approximately 13 inches X 9 inches plus borders & Harper's Weekly masthead. It is suitable for framing. Right side edge shows removal marks; other edges show light wear, which will be covered by the mat when framed. Signed in image: "TH. NAST." Overall the piece is Very Good. Thomas Nast (1840-1902) was a German-born American caricaturist and editorial cartoonist considered to be the "Father of the American Cartoon". He was the scourge of Democratic Representative "Boss" Tweed and the Tammany Hall Democratic party political machine & of the Democratic Party in general whom he considered pro-South traitors. He was also strongly anti-Irish & anti-Catholic Church, since in the 19th century the Irish strongly supported the Demogratic Party & were predominately Catholic. Nast considered the Catholic Church as a threat to American values. According to his biographer, Fiona Deans Halloran, Nast was "intensely opposed to the encroachment of Catholic ideas into public education". Among his notable works were the creation of the modern version of Santa Claus----based on the traditional German figures of Sankt Nikolaus and Weihnachtsmann----and the political symbol of the elephant for the Republican Party. Contrary to popular belief, Nast did not create Uncle Sam----the male personification of the American people----or Columbia----the female personification of American values----or the Democratic donkey, though he did popularize these symbols through his artwork. Nast was associated with the magazine Harper's Weekly from 1859 to 1860 and from 1862 until 1886. It has been argued by eminent historians that as a political cartoonist, Thomas Nast wielded more influence than any other artist of the 19th century. He not only enthralled a vast audience with boldness and wit, but swayed it time and again to his personal position on the strength of his visual imagination. President Lincoln called Nast "our best recruiting sergeant" for one of his most celebrated cartoons "Compromise with the South", which was directed against those in the North who opposed the prosecution of the American Civil War, as well as, for drawing battlefields in border and southern states. President Grant attributed his victory in 1868 to "the sword of Sheridan and the pencil of Thomas Nast." In the 1872 presidential campaign, Nast's ridicule of Horace Greeley's candidacy was especially merciless. After Grant's victory in 1872, Mark Twain wrote the artist a letter saying: "Nast, you more than any other man have won a prodigious victory for Grant----I mean, rather, for Civilization and Progress." As a crusading civil reformer he helped destroy the corrupt "Boss" Tweed Ring that swindled NYC of millions of dollars. His impact on American public life was formidable enough to profoundly affect the outcome of every presidential election during the period 1864 to 1884. ALL ITEMS ARE GUARANTEED TO BE ACCURATELY DESCRIBED, NOT DEFECTIVE, & GENUINE. PLEASE NOTE: We do all our own shipping. We will combine shipping on multiple items, where possible to save the wining bidder on shipping costs. Shipping will be added to winning bidder's invoice for item(s) won.
