THOMAS SHERLOCK HODGSON NON OBJECTIVE (BLUISH),

Lot 201: THOMAS SHERLOCK HODGSON NON OBJECTIVE (BLUISH),

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: THOMAS SHERLOCK HODGSON NON OBJECTIVE (BLUISH), oil on masonite; signed 41.5 ins x 23.25 ins; 103.8 cms x 58.1 cms Provenance: Private Collection, Ontario. Exhibited: Seventh Annual Exhibition, Art Gallery of Hamilton, Ontario, 1955. Note: Tom Hodgson joined the Painters Eleven group at its founding in 1953. His "Non Objective" (1955) is alive with rich colour, bold shapes and lines which seem to enter into the space of the viewer. The artist's meticulous blending of grey and cream-coloured pigments creates a background from which the marvelous shapes and lines emerge. In 1955, Hodgson would abandon masonite in favour of painting upon large canvases, similar in size to those artworks he saw while participating in the Carnegie International Exhibition of Contemporary Paintings at the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh.

CHARLES PACHTER THE STATE OF TARTS I, acrylic on

Lot 202: CHARLES PACHTER THE STATE OF TARTS I, acrylic on

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: CHARLES PACHTER THE STATE OF TARTS I, acrylic on canvas; signed and dated '85 30 ins x 43 ins; 75 cms x 107.5 cms Provenance: Gallery Moos, Toronto. Private Collection, British Columbia. Literature: Bogomila Welsh-Ovcharov, Charles Pachter, Toronto, 1992, pages 94 and 98 (plate 104), reproduced in colour Note: Bogomila Welsh-Ovcharov notes that, "By the mid-80s Pachter's examination of abstract form within a representational framework is readily seen in two paintings of butter tarts titled State of the Tarts, 1985 (this lot) and 1988. Pachter's ongoing search for Canadian symbols led to his claim that butter tarts were as indigenous to English Canada as croissants were to France, or doughnuts to the U.S.A. These handsome still-lifes recall motifs favoured by Roy Lichtenstein and Wayne Thiebaud among American Pop artists."
