George Washington:

Estimate: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: George Washington: "Long Live the President" Liverpool Pitcher. 7 1/2" pitcher with black transfer on either side. One side shows a portrait of Washington within a wreath, flanked by goddesses and pine trees. It was drawn by F. Morris of Shelton. The inscription reads: "Deafness to the Ear that will patiently/ hear & Dumbness to the Tongue/ that will utter a calumny against the/ Immortal Washington/ My Favorite Son/ Long Live the President of the United States." The transfer on the other side has a laudatory poem to the goddess Liberty, encircled by the names of fifteen states. One of the few Washington Liverpool pieces that date from his tenure in office. The "Long Live the President" slogan matches that seen on GW inaugural buttons. Beautiful condition. Ex: Kenneth Snow's Old Jail House Antiques in Newburyport, Massachusetts (where the cataloger nearly dropped it when he turned it upside down and a live spider popped out, as well as a dead one). From the Scott W. Dolson Collection.

"The President of the United States of America" below distinctive 5½" profile of George Washington. Large transfer of a couple returning from a sailing excursion on opposite side. Height 10.5". John Adams: Rare and Sought-after Liverpool Creamware P

Estimate: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: John Adams: Rare and Sought-after Liverpool Creamware Pitcher as President. Liverpool pitchers and other forms were produced for our first four presidents but examples picturing John Adams are by far the rarest. To provide some perspective, the renowned U.I. "Chick" Harris Collection included only a single example, and Harris collected for nearly five decades before he was able to obtain that single one. A fine, large portrait of Adams is surmounted by a small Federal eagle, with the legend "John Adams President of the United States" below. ON the opposite side is an elaborate Masonic image, and under the pouring spout is "Success to America" surrounded by a wreath. Condition is excellent, with very bold transfers, and no apparent indications of repair or restoration. For strictest accuracy we note a trivial 3/8" hairline emanating from the base on one side and a small half-moon shaped discoloration on the bottom of the reverse side. Height 8.5". From the Scott W. Dolson Collection.

John Adams: A Highly Important Large Liverpool Creamwar

Estimate: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: John Adams: A Highly Important Large Liverpool Creamware Punch Bowl. This is the largest Liverpool piece we have ever handled, and it features the portrait of our second president-the rarest American leader to be found pictured on a Liverpool object. Diameter 13", depth 6". On the front is Adams' portrait with "John Adams President of the United States" below, flanked by female figures representing Liberty, Justice and Plenty. On the opposite side is a map the newly independent nation, flanked by a standing George Washington and the three ladies. On one side is a large vignette of Neptune with his court and on the other a pastoral scene. In the bottom of the bowl is a color transfer of the warship, Reuben Jones, flying a 15-star American flag. Condition is simply superb, with just one tiny, almost undetectable hairline noted only for very strictest accuracy. This was an expensive, custom-order piece in its day, most likely ordered by a wealthy New Englander for entertaining or presentation. The consignor purchased it in our 2008 auction of the Ed Gillette collection, where it was one of the featured items and sold for $15,535. From the Scott W. Dolson Collection.

John Hancock: Classic

Estimate: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: John Hancock: Classic "Proscribed Patriots" Liverpool Creamware Jug, with Jefferson Quote. "Columbia's Sons inspired by Freedom's Flame Live on in the Annals of Immortal Fame." Above their portraits is a Washington memorial monument marked "GW" and "In Memory of Washington and the Proscribed Patriots of America." On reverse is a standing Revolutionary War soldier with flag, and legends including "Success to America whose Militia is better than Standing Armies." Under the spout is a bold Federal-style eagle with the quote: "Peace, Commerce, and honest Friendship with all Nations, Entangling Alliances with none-Jefferson, Anno domini 1802" (while Jefferson was president). The wonderful design elements were hand-colored, as is all too rarely seen on Liverpool pieces, creating a truly beautiful display presence. Pouring spout may be restored, but no other indications of restoration. Height 7.875". From the Scott W. Dolson Collection.

Thomas Jefferson: Impressive Liverpool Creamware Pitche

Estimate: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Thomas Jefferson: Impressive Liverpool Creamware Pitcher with Striking Gold-leaf Embellishments. Portrait of Jefferson with name above and "President of the United States of America" below, surrounded by a garland into which is woven a streamer with the names of the States. Under the pouring lip is a figure of Apollo and the legend "A present for a friend," and on the reverse is a sailing vessel flying the American flag with "Success to Trade" below. Aside from minor wear to the gold leaf, it is in exceptional condition, with no apparent indications of repair or restoration. Height 8.5". This pitcher was clearly custom-ordered as a gift, as stock versions were not made with the elaborate gold decoration. After the Peace Treaty of 1783 bygones were quickly bygones and a brisk trade flourished between the newly-independent United States and the Mother Country. A staple of that trade was the popular creamware manufactured in Liverpool. Thousands of utilitarian and decorative examples were sold in America, although the vast majority had subject matter other than American presidents. From the Scott W. Dolson Collection.

Description: Thomas Jefferson: A Spectacular, Very Large Liverpool Creamware Pitcher with Standing Jefferson, The Finest We Have Seen. At fully 11 inches tall, with a diameter including handle of over 10 inches, this is one of the largest presidential Liverpool pitchers we have encountered. Bold standing figure with name below, and color image of a packet flying an American flag on reverse. Under the pouring spout are a Federal eagle and the name of the owners, "W. & E. Elms." This was undoubtedly a special order piece, for personal use or for presentation as a gift. Condition is outstanding, with no apparent indicators of repair or restoration. Arguably the premier Jefferson ceramic vessel, and clearly one of the finest 3-D display pieces in the Dolson Collection. From the Scott W. Dolson Collection.

DeWitt Clinton: High Quality Portrait Snuff Box. 4

Estimate: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: DeWitt Clinton: High Quality Portrait Snuff Box. 4" papier-mâché snuff box by Stobwasser. The lid has a beautiful hand-painted portrait of the 1812 Federalist candidate for President (likely painted over an engraving). The lid's interior is marked "Mr. De Witt Clinton 2439." The interior of the base is inscribed "Stobwasser's Fabrick". The condition is absolutely gorgeous. Not only that, is comes in the original box covered in textured orange paper. Clinton briefly served as Mayor of New York City, was defeated for the Presidency by James Madison in 1812 and subsequently was elected Governor of New York State where he presided over the completion of the Erie Canal, one of the greatest accomplishments of the early Republic. This is the best Clinton piece available and, without question, the finest example known! From the Scott W. Dolson Collection.

James Monroe: Magnificent Paris Porcelain Demitasse Cup

Estimate: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: James Monroe: Magnificent Paris Porcelain Demitasse Cup with Stipple Engraving Transfer Portrait. A stunning piece, clearly one of the finest objects in the Dolson Collection. Monroe items of any type are prohibitively rare, and we have never encountered another example of this form. Other than some trivial wear to the gold leaf on the lip it is in near-mint condition. Height 2.375". More familiar is the blue on white "Munroe" cup, of which perhaps a half dozen examples are known. That variety has a generic portrait which is not recognizable as Monroe, but nonetheless has changed hands several times for prices from $12,000 to nearly $20,000. From the Scott W. Description: Henry Clay: Colored Portrait on Glass Daguerreotype Case. Here's a great item. It is an oval, velvet-covered daguerreotype case housing a ninth plate (1 3/4" x 2 1/4") dag of a young man. The cover of the case has a beautiful portrait under glass of Henry Clay, similar in style and execution to the Taylor pieces that come in assorted formats (hand-colored transfer images under glass). We do not recall ever seeing an example for Clay quite like this. Except for a small paint chip at the very top, of no consequence, it is in great condition. Circa 1848. Gorgeous. From the Scott W. Description: Andrew Jackson et al: Quadrugate Snuff Box. 3 1/2" papier-mâché snuff box with engraved portraits of Andrew Jackson, Martin Van Buren, Henry Clay and Daniel Webster, all against a copper ground. This is one of two designs depicting all four Democratic and Whig politicians. It may be a "bartender's friend" item of some sort, designed not to offend customers, or it may just be a patriotic piece extolling our leaders. Some chipping to the rims, both top and bottom, but no repairs or restoration noticeable. The Chicago History Museum owns an example and we know of two in private hands, including this example. Estimate: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Andrew Jackson: A Highly Important Large-size Pewter Rim. Diameter 2.5". This is the unlisted mate to DeWitt/Sullivan JQA 1828-3. Mirror reverse, as with the Quincy Adams. Minor light oxidation on the pewter frame and mirror, but the portrait insert is flawless, and overall the specimen condition is excellent. Suspension loop at top is absent as with most pewter rims. We were previously aware of two other Jackson pewter rims: a smaller one believed to be a campaign issue, and a larger one celebrating Jackson as a hero of the War of 1812. Pewter rims are among the most coveted of campaign items, as are Andrew Jackson items of all types. This possibly unique variety presents a very special opportunity indeed. From the Scott W. We have seen several examples over the years, none of which has approached the condition of this example, which for the type is in essentially near-mint condition. Estimate: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Andrew Jackson: Exceptional Large-size Copper Luster Pitcher with the Rarer Blue Background. On front and back are identical Enoch Wood portraits of Jackson with "General Jackson" above and "The Hero of New Orleans" below. Condition is essentially pristine and unimprovable. Height 8.25", making it the second largest of a variety of sizes in which these were produced. It seems likely that these were made for the 1824 election, as very similar pieces (although to our experience, always yellow) were made to celebrate Lafayette's celebrated 1824 return to the country he liberated. If one aspires to own a single representative example of a Jackson three-dimensional display item, this would be a perfect choice. From the Scott W. Dolson Collection.

Only a small handful of Van Buren portrait sulphides in all types and colors have survived, making them perhaps the most sought-after of all early political pins. This beauty is near-mint, disqualified from full "mint" categorization because of some minor tarnish on the frame. This sought-after variety has the words "Van Buren Democracy" in addition to "Subtreasury." In front of the strongbox is a guard dog, chained to the lock, and lying down but alert. It is listed by DeWitt/ Sullivan as MVB 1840-13, but no example was available to them to picture. This is the first we can recall being offered for sale. Choice condition, with replaced pin on reverse. There is a hint of separation of the black paint from the glass, almost always seen on these sulphides due to moisture, but it is minimal and there is no flaking of the paint. Impressive large 24 mm x 28 mm size. From the Scott W. Dolson Collection.

With it are two 3.375" tumblers with the same devices, closer together because of the smaller circumference. All three pieces are in pristine condition. We have seen perhaps several examples of the tumbler over the years, and they commanded low four-figure prices. However, this is the first example of the imposing large vessel we have encountered. No maker's mark, although the consignor believes they were probably made in Pittsburgh, an important glass-making center of that time. Together they clearly comprise a premier William H. Harrison display item. From the Scott W. Dolson Collection.

Description: William Henry Harrison: Fabulous Reverse Painting on Glass Wooden Box. 11 1/2" x 7 3/4" x 3 1/2" lidded, wooden box. It appears to be made of pine with a bevelled lid, all covered with veneer (minor chipping and loss, of no consequence). The interior of the lid is truly magnificent as it holds an 8 1/4" x 5" reverse painting on glass panel depicting "Gen. Wm. H. Harrison The Hero of Tippecanoe", superimposed on red and white stripes with a log cabin and cider barrel above. This is held in place by marbled paper, surrounded by yellow paper with orange paper trim on the edges and a blue paper lining on the bottom. The colors are vibrant with a true folk art feel. The lettering is gold which only serves to heighten the graphic appeal. We have seen other examples which tend to have defects such as cracked glass, but this one is by far the best... truly a gorgeous piece. From the Scott W. Dolson Collection.

On either side of the candidate are flags marked "Tippecanoe" and "Thames," the sites of his two famous military victories. Condition is near-mint. The devices were applied to these pitchers using decals, and a buckling of the decal has caused an irregularity in the word "Reform," as made, but otherwise an unimprovable example. From the Scott W. Estimate: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: William Henry Harrison: A Superb and Highly Important Cut, Frosted, and Etched Glass 1840 Campaign Parade Lantern. Few categories of three-dimensional political artifacts are more sought-after than 19th century lanterns. Political rallies and parades often took place at night, and often required torches and lanterns to illuminate them. While torches have survived in large numbers, hand-carried lanterns are prohibitively rare. Although they were made in a variety of types, it is doubtful that more than a couple dozen examples for all candidates before 1868 can be found in private and institutional collections. This is the only example of this Harrison variety, made of tin with openwork and a frosted and etched glass globe, that we have ever encountered. The globe was clearly made by the same company as the vase and tumblers in an adjacent lot. It features the same devices etched and in relief: log cabin, cider barrel and flag on a pole. But additional devices include a pyramid of stacked cannon balls and a terrific large, bold eagle atop crossed cannons. An unfrosted rectangle is inscribed, presumably with the owner's name, "C. Chapman." Height including original carrying loop is 10.75". Condition is excellent, with typical light even oxidation of the tin surfaces. The original candle is even present in the tin base. In a collection which features many outstanding political display items this wonderful, possibly unique, lantern stands out as one of the premier pieces. From the Scott W. Dolson Collection.

Description: William Henry Harrison: Massive 1840 Campaign Pitcher, Widely Regarded as the Premier 19th Century Ceramic Political Display Item. One really must see the scale of this 11.375" pitcher in person to fully appreciate its display presence. It features four portrait panels with log cabins above each and patriotic eagles below. "The Ohio Farmer" above the portrait and his name below. Manufactured by the American Pottery Company of Jersey City, New Jersey, it is coveted both by political collectors and enthusiasts of American-made pottery (the vast majority of political ceramics of this ear were manufactured in England or France for the American market). Condition is outstanding, virtually mint except for one hardly detectable hairline, noted for accuracy. We are aware of perhaps 4 or 5 other examples in leading political collections, but this is our first opportunity to handle one. Clearly one of the premier items in the Dolson Collection. Estimate: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: John Tyler: A Rare Porcelain Cup with his Hand-painted Portrait. Probably done in Paris, although lacking the gold leaf accents and refinement of some Parisian porcelain pieces. Nonetheless, display pieces of any sort for Tyler are prohibitively rare, and campaign items are non-existent because this "accidental president" never ran for the office in his own right. Height 2.75", Diameter 3.625", and in excellent condition. From the Scott W. Dolson Collection.

Polk and Clay: A Gleaming Matched Pair of Rare 1844 She

Estimate: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Polk and Clay: A Gleaming Matched Pair of Rare 1844 Shell Badges. The Henry Clay is optimistically dated for the first year of his hoped-for presidency, but alas, he would prove no more successful in the 1844 election than in his other presidential runs. Both are equally rare, and anything made for Polk's candidacy has always commanded a significant premium. This matched pair is really "as good as it gets" for the collector or early political badges. Diameter of each is 24 mm, and both retain their rarely-seen original suspension loops. From the Scott W. Dolson Collection.

Estimate: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Henry Clay: A Spectacular, Virtually Mint Glasses or Stogie Case, with an Unusual Portrait. These cases have always been highly collectable, and we have never encountered one in such fine condition. It appears never to have been used, and the surface retains all its original gloss-the colors are almost luminous. Upon very careful examination there is some incipient surface crazing, but it is not apparent and detracts minimally. If one would like to own a single representative example of this type of item, there could be no better choice. 3" x 5.375". From the Scott W. Dolson Collection.

Henry Clay: A Stunning, Unique Hand-painted Paris Porce

Estimate: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Henry Clay: A Stunning, Unique Hand-painted Paris Porcelain Cup. With its richly detailed color portrait and gleaming gold leaf accents, this is surely one of the most captivating of all political display pieces. Your writer has known this piece for some decades, and it has passed through several prominent collections, yet each renewed acquaintance still takes my breath away. Mint condition except for some trivial wear to the gold trim on the lip. Height 3.75". This cup was one of the featured items in the legendary collection of the late Ed Gillette, and was purchased by the consignor for $13,145 in the March 2008 Heritage auction of that collection. From the Scott W. Dolson Collection.

Zachary Taylor: Political or Patriotic Paper Folding Fa

Estimate: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Zachary Taylor: Political or Patriotic Paper Folding Fan. 16" x 8" opened. The fan pictures a young Zachary Taylor, in full uniform of a major general, topped by an American eagle and shield and flanked by a trophy of arms. On each side is a battle scene, the Battle of Lundy's Lane on the left and the Battle of Chippewa on the right. Taylor commanded the United States 6th Infantry Regiment that fought in both engagements during the War of 1812. Taylor received the nickname "Old Rough and Ready" during the Seminole War for his rumpled clothes and wide-brimmed straw hat. Although the battles pictured were from the War of 1812, Taylor's rank of major general suggests that the fan dates from the Mexican War, just prior to his receiving the Whig nomination for president in the election of 1848. Printed in powder blue & black. Wood struts. Two minor splits at the folds, but fully intact. The reverse side is blank. From the Scott W. Dolson Collection.

Zachary Taylor: One of the Nicest Bandana Designs for t

Estimate: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Zachary Taylor: One of the Nicest Bandana Designs for the 1848 Whig Presidential Candidate. Like all but one of the listed Taylor bandannas, it has a military theme, featuring him in uniform and surrounded by vignettes of his four most famous Mexican war victories. It is difficult to determine which of the various Taylor bandannas would be best considered Mexican War patriotic items and which were issued for 1848 campaign purposes. We suspect that most fit in both categories, as Taylor's military stature was certainly central to his presidential campaign. The present example is brown on cream, while the version in the Smithsonian's collection is maroon and white. It is overall in exceptional condition for the type, with only the slightest hints of very light aging. The central portrait area is remarkably clean and bright. Pictured by Collins in Threads of History as number 210 (p. 128), however this specimen is clearly superior to that plate example. The bandana has been slightly trimmed along the left and right sides, and, for accuracy, we note several inconsequential small tears in the surrounding vignettes and at the right edge. Small hole, less than ¼" in diameter, in the very upper left-hand corner noted for accuracy. One of just a handful known, as the catalog photo shows, this bandanna displays beautifully. 24.25" x 21.25". From the Scott W. Dolson Collection.

Description: Zachary Taylor: Unique Silver Campaign Match Safe. Previously unseen 1" x 2 1/2" x 1/2" silver match safe. One side has a portrait of Zachary Taylor in an oval, inscribed "A Little More Grape". The other side has a military display with eagle, crossed flags and swords. Raised floral designs populate either side. The interior lip is hallmarked "L & W" (Leonard & Wilson of Philadelphia, per "American Silversmiths and Their Marks" by Stephen Ensko). Some weakness to the hinge with light bends, not noticeable from the front and more prominent on the undecorated sides. A lovely piece. From the Scott W. Dolson Collection.

Zachary Taylor: A Most Unusual Pewter Rim Variety. List

Estimate: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Zachary Taylor: A Most Unusual Pewter Rim Variety. Listed by DeWitt/Sullivan as ZT-1848-46, but this is the first example we can recall seeing "in the flesh." Attractive color portrait with mirror reverse. Holed at top for suspension as issued (the DeWitt example is similarly holed). Frame and mirror are oxidized, but the insert is in great condition and free of the browning or water staining often encountered with pewter rims. Diameter 2.5". From the Scott W. Dolson Collection.
