Pound, Ezra. The Pisan Cantos.

Lot 16: Pound, Ezra. The Pisan Cantos.

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: NY; New Direction, 1948. 8vo in publisher's black cloth with title in silver to spine, in original dust-jacket. >>>>> Signed and inscribed by Pound on front blank to Eileen (likely Eileen Lane), "Eileen from Ezra full benedictus. St. Liz 1949" and further signed in green ink, "having been forgot returned and re returned. repeat 'benedictus' June '58." "St. Liz" was actually Saint Elizabeth's where Pound was held for 13 years. Pound was a strong supporter of Italy's Mussolini and worked actively against the Allied forces. He was captured and held by U.S. forces in a prison camp near Pisa. It is believed that this experience drove him to a break in mental health, though this experience also produced one of his most beautiful works, The Pisan Cantos. Upon his return to the U.S., Pound was ruled unfit for trial and was sent to St. Elizabeth's Hospital. The present copy was signed by Pound while at St. Elizabeth's, and apparently he forgot to send it to Eileen. The second inscription was made the same year as his release from St. Elizabeth's in 1958. A scarce item
