Estimate: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Victor Salmones (1937-1989) Bronze Brutalist sculpture by artist Victor Salmones (1937-1989). It was there that the famous Bauhaus master Otto Hoffman discovered his talent. Hoffman took Salmones under his wing, and offered him an apprenticeship. Hoffman's encouragement led to the opening of Victor's own sculpture workshop in Cuernavaca in 1966. In 1967, Salmones' fluid bronze Adam was awarded first prize at the Biennale Exposition of the National Museum of Modern Art. His work continued to win the highest critical acclaim at subsequent Biennale expositions, and in 1971, over hundreds of entries, his life-size bronze Narcissus was honored with first place in the national art competition juried by Harry Greer of the New York's Frick Museum and Charles Nagle of the Smithsonian. Now a landmark of Salmones' adopted city, Narcissus surveys the port from a rock in Acapulco Bay. Victor Salmones gained steadily in recognition internationally, as he was honored with one man shows throughout the world. Public and private collections in some thirty-eight countries have collected and showcased his sculpture. Victor Salmones continued sculpting until his untimely death in 1989. He worked principally in bronze, using the centuries-old lost wax method of casting. Each of his sculptures was cast in a numbered series of ten. Height: 6.5 in.

Charles Francois Daubigny (1817 - 1878)

Description: Charles Francois Daubigny (US, France, 1817 - 1878) Original Ink/Pencil Drawing of a wooded landscape with estate stamp. Image size: 6.25 x 4.5 in. Overall Size: 16 x 14 in. Provenance: Private California Collection. After winning his first Salon prize in 1848, the French government commissioned an etching from him after Claude Lorrain's Abreuvoir. Daubigny's first love, however, was landscape painting, and his fascination with water was evident judging from his Salon entries of the late 1840s and early 1850s. Daubigny's position as a respected painter and prominent member of the artistic community was clearly recognized when in 1865, he was elected a member of the Salon Jury. In this role, he was one of few who recognized the talents of a new generation of younger artists, and his influence was key in the acceptance of works by Pissarro, Monet, Sisley and Degas. Attr. Leonardo Da Vinci (1452 - 1519) Drawing

Estimate: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Attr. Leonardo Da Vinci (Italy, France, 1452 - 1519) Drawing. Ink/Paper. With Possible Initial/Monogram in lower right portion of image. Provenance: Private California Collection. Leonardo's legendary renown as an artist has remained on the highest level from his own times to the present day in spite of his surprisingly small known body of work: traditionally some fifteen paintings and less than seventy sketches and drawings relating to those paintings; of those drawings, only a small percentage might be considered more finished preparatory studies. However, some 4,000 drawings of one kind and another are integrated into his Notebooks and speak of his mastery of the medium. The incomparable quality of Leonardo's artistic body of work and the creative vigor of his scientific intellect have combined to idealize him as the classic Renaissance Man. Image Size: 3.5 x 7.5 in. Overall Size: 11.25 x 15.75 in.

Description: Circle of Francesco Guarino (1611 - 1651) Saint Agatha. Oil on Canvas. Size: 30 x 25 inches. Francesco Guarino or Guarini (1611-1651 or 1654) was an Italian painter of the Baroque period, active mainly in Irpinia, and in other areas of the Kingdom of Naples, chiefly Campania, Apulia, and Molise. He was born in Sant'Andrea Apostolo, today a frazione of Solofra in the Province of Avellino, Campania, and died in Gravina di Puglia. He was a pupil first of his father, Giovanni Tommaso Guarino, before moving to Naples to work in the studio of Massimo Stanzione. In Naples, like many of his contemporaries there, he was influenced by the style of Caravaggio. In his selection of models who appear to have been plucked from the streets of Naples, he recalls the style of Bernardo Cavallino, the fellow-pupil of Stanzioni. Among his masterpieces are the works for the Collegiata di San Michele Arcangelo in Solofra.

Dwight W. Tryon (American 1849 - 1925)

Description: Dwight William Tryon (Massachusetts, New York, Connecticut, 1849-1925) Moonlit luminous landscape painting of Massachusetts marshes. Oil on board. Signed lower right. Sight Size: 10.5 x 21.5 in. One of America's first Tonalist painters and much influenced by the Barbizon School of painting in France, Dwight Tryon was also a long-time art professor at Smith College in Northhampton, Massachusetts, 1885 to 1924. In 1881, Tryon exhibited at the Paris Salon, and that year returned to New York City where he opened a studio on 57th Street and began giving lessons. Almost immediately, he earned the life-long patronage of Charles Lang Freer, art collector and railway-industrial capitalist, for whom Tryon did many paintings including a series of seasonal landscapes for Freer's Detroit home. As a result, a large portion of Tryon's work is in the Freer Gallery in Washington D.C. Another patron of Tryon was Thomas B. Clarke, the first collector in the industrial age in America to favor American artists over European. In 1883, Tryon opened a summer studio in Dartmouth, Massachusetts, a small fishing village near New Bedford, and a few years later he and his wife built a summer home they called the "Cottage". Many of his paintings from that period are twilight and evening scenes in Tonalist Barbizon mode such as The End of Day and Newbury Haystacks in Moonlight. They show that Tryon was aware of the nocturnes of James McNeill Whistler, who also was much influenced by the Barbizon School.

A native of Germany, Paul Weber studied in Frankfurt before immigrating to America in 1848. He settled in Philadelphia, painting idyllic landscapes that combined the precision of his German training with the rich detailing of the Pre-Raphaelites. He began exhibiting at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts one year after his arrival and remained a frequent exhibitor throughout his life. In 1860, Weber returned to his hometown of Darmstadt to work as the court painter to the Grand Duke of Hesse-Darmstadt. He later moved back to Philadelphia, where he worked as an art instructor and showed his paintings at the National Academy of Design, the Boston Athenaeum, and the Paris Salon. His work was carried on by his students, which include such notable artists as Edward Moran, William Trost Richards, and William Stanley Haseltine, and his paintings are now featured in The Corcoran Gallery of Art, the Butler Institute of American Art, the Timken Museum of Art in San Diego, and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.

In 1883, he moved to San Jose, California where he "achieved what is perhaps the ultimate expression in the age of vulgar wealth that followed the agriculturally rich mid-century, in his painting of Mrs. Leland Stanford's jewelry collection." From California, Cooper maintained contacts with Eastern art dealers, so that his Western wildlife series of paintings was popular both in this country and in Europe. He became an authority on the history of the American West, although his San Jose studio was decoration in an Egyptian motif. Not generally recorded in Cooper's biography as a Western painter is that in the 1890's he was the most widely known of the local painters of the large barroom oils of plump nudes realistically depicted.
