(Courtesy of Wikipedia)Translor: Clara Bell - Clara Bell, nee Poynter, was an English translator fluent in French, German, Danish, Dutch, Italian, Norwegian, Russian, and Spanish, noted for her translations of works by Henrik Ibsen, Balzac, Georg Ebers, Huysmans, Maupassant, and others. She was educated in France, where she became fluent in French and German; she did not acquire her knowledge of the other languages until after her fortieth birthday. Lot 4002: Ernest Hemingway ACROSS THE RIVER AND INTO THE TREES 1950 Author-Signed First Edition Vintage Novel Set In Venice Scarce Dust Jacket American Literature

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Title: Across the River and into the TreesAuthor: Ernest Miller Hemingway - Ernest Miller Hemingway was an American author and journalist. His distinctive writing style, characterized by economy and understatement, strongly influenced 20th-century fiction, as did his life of adventure and his public image. Hemingway produced most of his work between the mid-1920s and the mid-1950s, winning the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1954. He published seven novels, six short story collections, and two non-fiction works during his lifetime; a further three novels, four collections of short stories, and three non-fiction works were published posthumously. Many of his works are classics of American literature.Hemingway was born and raised in Oak Park, Illinois. After leaving high school, he worked for a few months as a reporter for The Kansas City Star, before leaving for the Italian front to become an ambulance driver during World War I. In 1918, he was seriously wounded and returned home within the year; his wartime experiences became the basis for his novel "A Farewell to Arms." In 1922, Hemingway married Hadley Richardson, the first of his four wives, and the couple moved to Paris, where he worked as a foreign correspondent. During his time there, he met and was influenced by modernist writers and artists of the 1920s expatriate community known as the "Lost Generation". His first novel, "The Sun Also Rises," was published in 1926.After divorcing Hadley Richardson in 1927, Hemingway married Pauline Pfeiffer; they divorced following Hemingway's return from covering the Spanish Civil War, after which he wrote "For Whom the Bell Tolls." Martha Gellhorn became his third wife in 1940; they separated when he met Mary Welsh in London during World War II. During the war, he was present during the Normandy Landings and the liberation of Paris.Shortly after the publication of "The Old Man and the Sea" in 1952, Hemingway went on safari to Africa, where he was almost killed in a plane crash that left him in pain or ill-health for much of the rest of his life. Hemingway had permanent residences in Key West, Florida, and Cuba during the 1930s and '40s, but in 1959 he moved from Cuba to Ketchum, Idaho, where he committed suicide in the summer of 1961.Publisher: Charles Scribner's SonsCity: New YorkYear: 1950Printing Information: Signed EditionBinding Style: HardcoverPagination: 308 pagesWidth: 6.25" Height: 8.5"Book Details: Prior to publication by Scribner's the novel was serialized in Cosmopolitan magazine. The title is derived from the last words of Confederate General Thomas J. (Stonewall) Jackson. The first chapter opens on the last day in the life of antagonist, Colonel Richard Cantwell, who is duck hunting in Trieste. Much of the novel is a protracted flashback, with Cantwell thinking about a young Venetian woman, Renata, and about his life as a soldier during the war. In Italy, Hemingway had met a young woman, Adriana Ivancich, with whom he was infatuated and he used as the model for the female character in the novel. A central theme in the novel is death and how one faces death. One biographer and critic sees a parallel between Hemingway's "Across the River and Into the Trees" and Thomas Mann's "Death in Venice." Generally critics agree the novel is built upon successive layers of symbolism. As in his other writing, Hemingway employs the style known as the iceberg theory, in which much of the substance of the work lies below the surface of the plot itself.Hemingway himself said of the novel, "Book start slow, then increase in pace till it becomes impossible to stand. I bring emotion up to where you can't stand it, then we level off, so we won't have to provide oxygen tents for the readers."The novel was written in Italy, Cuba and France. Across the River and Into the Trees was the first of Hemingway's novels to receive consistently bad press and reviews. In the years since its publication, however, some critics have come to believe it is an important addition to the Hemingway canon.(Summary courtesy of Wikipedia)Condition / Notes: This is a scarce, author-signed first edition. The inscription on title page reads "To Julia, / With Best Regards, / Edith / Ernest Hemingway." This book belonged to Elinor Parker, who spent her career working for Scribner's and ultimately reached the level of vice president with the firm. The book includes an original letter from 1998, signed by Parker and an invoice from the auction when the book was sold as part of the liquidation of her estate in 2012. The full text of Parker's letter is included below:********************************************As an employee of Charles Scribner's Sons from 1938 until my retirement in 1980, I had the pleasure of working with various famous authors. While working directly with the authors as editor and later as the firm's Vicer President, I was granted the special privilege of receiving signed books as gifts. Among the books were several by Ernest Hemingway, Allan Nevins (best known for his book "Ordeal of the Union"), Alan Paton and Kurt Vonnegut.During the early part of 1950, I was working as a senior editor at Scribner's and had the distinct pleasure of working directly with Ernest Hemingway on his new novel "Across the River and into the Trees." The book was officially released for publication in the fall of 1950 and Ernest signed this copy for me in my office. At that time, I requested that he sign it with no inscription so that I could add an additional inscription later as it was my intention to give this book to a friend as a Christmas present. The additional inscription was added, however the intended recipient passed away just prior to the Christmas of 1950 and the book has remained in my collection ever since.Due to the book being signed in my presence, the signature should be considered by anyone concerned as authentic. Ernest became a personal friend and was, without a doubt, one of the most important writers I have ever had the pleasure of knowing.****************************************Volume is bound in black cloth with gilt-lettered lettering to spine and front cover with facsimile of author's signature in gold. Book shows light shelfwear. Binding is firm. Pages are clean and without markings. Price-clipped and lightly-soiled dust jacket exhibits shelfwear, with fraying and loss at top/bottom of spine panel top outside corners and small tears and chipping at edges. Description: Title: Farthest North: Being the Record of a Voyage of Exploration of the Ship "Fram" 1893-96 and of a Fifteen Months' Sleigh Journey by Dr. Nansen and Lieut. JohansenAuthor: Fridtjof Nansen - Fridtjof Wedel-Jarlsberg Nansen was a Norwegian explorer, scientist, diplomat, humanitarian and Nobel Peace Prize laureate. In his youth a champion skier and ice skater, he led the team that made the first crossing of the Greenland interior in 1888, and won international fame after reaching a record northern latitude of 86°14? during his North Pole expedition of 1893-96. Although he retired from exploration after his return to Norway, his techniques of polar travel and his innovations in equipment and clothing influenced a generation of subsequent Arctic and Antarctic expeditions. Nansen studied zoology at the Royal Frederick University, and later worked as a curator at the Bergen Museum where his research on the central nervous system of lower marine creatures earned him a doctorate and helped establish modern theories of neurology. After 1896 his main scientific interest switched to oceanography; in the course of his research he made many scientific cruises, mainly in the North Atlantic, and contributed to the development of modern oceanographic equipment. As one of his country's leading citizens, in 1905 Nansen spoke out for the ending of Norway's union with Sweden, and was instrumental in persuading Prince Charles of Denmark to accept the throne of the newly independent Norway. Between 1906 and 1908 he served as the Norwegian representative in London, where he helped negotiate the Integrity Treaty that guaranteed Norway's independent status. In the final decade of his life Nansen devoted himself primarily to the League of Nations, following his appointment in 1921 as the League's High Commissioner for Refugees. In 1922 he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his work on behalf of the displaced victims of the First World War and related conflicts. Among the initiatives he introduced was the "Nansen passport" for stateless persons, a certificate recognised by more than 50 countries. He worked on behalf of refugees until his sudden death in 1930, after which the League established the Nansen International Office for Refugees to ensure that his work continued. This office received the Nobel Peace Prize for 1938. Nansen was honoured by many nations, and his name is commemorated in numerous geographical features, particularly in the polar regions.Publisher: Harper & Brothers PublishersCity: New YorkYear: 1897Printing Information: First EditionBinding Style: HardcoverNumber of Volumes: 2 Complete: YesWidth: 7" Height: 9.75"Book Details: Antique set is bound in dark gray cloth with stamped gilt lettering to spines and front covers. The book begins with 27 pictures of those who died, each one being named a "martir." This edition of the album was distributed among the surviving members. The backgrounds of the pictures show vignettes of the actual conflict that would lead to the eventual overthrow of Batista's government. Following the martyrs are 54 pictures of those who survived, again against similar backgrounds. Included in this last group are pictures of Fidel and Raul Castro, as well as of a very young Ernesto "Che" Guevara. The title page details the particulars of the expedition (points of departure/arrival, number of crew, size of the vessel, length of voyage) that set out from Texpan, Mexico on November 25, 1956. Also imprinted on the title page is the statement that proceeds from this album will go to the building of a vault for the martyrs of the "Granma" (which is today exhibited in the Granma Memorial adjacent to the Museo de la Revolucion in Havana). It is rumored that a copy of this was buried with each deceased revolutionary, leaving few copies still in existence. To inspect and acquire more detailed information about this lot, please attend our live preview before the auction. Lot 4022: Oscar Wilde THE HAPPY PRINCE AND OTHER TALES 1913 Antique English Literature Color Plates & Vignettes By Charles Robinson Decorative Binding

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Title: The Happy Prince and Other TalesAuthor: Oscar Wilde - Oscar Fingal O'Flahertie Wills Wilde was an Irish writer and poet. After writing in different forms throughout the 1880s, he became one of London's most popular playwrights in the early 1890s. Today he is remembered for his epigrams and plays, and the circumstances of his imprisonment which was followed by his early death.Wilde's parents were successful Dublin intellectuals. Their son became fluent in French and German early in life. At university Wilde read Greats; he proved himself to be an outstanding classicist, first at Dublin, then at Oxford. He became known for his involvement in the rising philosophy of aestheticism, led by two of his tutors, Walter Pater and John Ruskin. After university, Wilde moved to London into fashionable cultural and social circles. As a spokesman for aestheticism, he tried his hand at various literary activities: he published a book of poems, lectured in the United States and Canada on the new "English Renaissance in Art", and then returned to London where he worked prolifically as a journalist. Known for his biting wit, flamboyant dress, and glittering conversation, Wilde became one of the best-known personalities of his day.At the turn of the 1890s, he refined his ideas about the supremacy of art in a series of dialogues and essays, and incorporated themes of decadence, duplicity, and beauty into his only novel, "The Picture of Dorian Gray" (1890). The opportunity to construct aesthetic details precisely, and combine them with larger social themes, drew Wilde to write drama. He wrote "Salome" (1891) in French in Paris but it was refused a licence. Unperturbed, Wilde produced four society comedies in the early 1890s, which made him one of the most successful playwrights of late Victorian London. At the height of his fame and success, while his masterpiece, "The Importance of Being Earnest" (1895), was still on stage in London, Wilde had the Marquess of Queensberry, the father of his lover, Lord Alfred Douglas, prosecuted for libel, a charge carrying a penalty of up to two years in prison. The trial unearthed evidence that caused Wilde to drop his charges and led to his own arrest and trial for gross indecency with other men. After two more trials he was convicted and imprisoned for two years' hard labour. In 1897, in prison, he wrote "De Profundis," which was published in 1905, a long letter which discusses his spiritual journey through his trials, forming a dark counterpoint to his earlier philosophy of pleasure. Upon his release he left immediately for France, never to return to Ireland or Britain. There he wrote his last work, "The Ballad of Reading Gaol" (1898), a long poem commemorating the harsh rhythms of prison life. He died destitute in Paris at the age of forty-six.Publisher: Duckworth & Co.City: LondonYear: 1913Binding Style: HardcoverPagination: 133 pagesWidth: 8" Height: 10.25"Book Details: Condition / Notes: This is a scarce first edition of this work with illustrations by British book illustrator Charles Robinson.Antique volume is bound in gray cloth with stamped gilt lettering to spine and front cover. Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Title: Elsie Venner: A Romance of DestinyAuthor: Oliver Wendell Holmes - Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr. was an American physician, poet, professor, lecturer, and author based in Boston. A member of the Fireside Poets, his peers acclaimed him as one of the best writers of the day. His most famous prose works are the "Breakfast-Table" series, which began with "The Autocrat of the Breakfast-Table" (1858). He was also an important medical reformer.Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Holmes was educated at Phillips Academy and Harvard College. After graduating from Harvard in 1829, he briefly studied law before turning to the medical profession. He began writing poetry at an early age; one of his most famous works, "Old Ironsides", was published in 1830 and was influential in the eventual preservation of the USS Constitution. Following training at the prestigious medical schools of Paris, Holmes was granted his M.D. from Harvard Medical School in 1836. He taught at Dartmouth Medical School before returning to teach at Harvard and, for a time, served as dean there. During his long professorship, he became an advocate for various medical reforms and notably posited the controversial idea that doctors were capable of carrying puerperal fever from patient to patient. Holmes retired from Harvard in 1882 and continued writing poetry, novels and essays until his death in 1894.Surrounded by Boston's literary elite-which included friends such as Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, and James Russell Lowell-Holmes made an indelible imprint on the literary world of the 19th century. Many of his works were published in The Atlantic Monthly, a magazine that he named. For his literary achievements and other accomplishments, he was awarded numerous honorary degrees from universities around the world. Holmes's writing often commemorated his native Boston area, and much of it was meant to be humorous or conversational. Some of his medical writings, notably his 1843 essay regarding the contagiousness of puerperal fever, were considered innovative for their time. He was often called upon to issue occasional poetry, or poems written specifically for an event, including many occasions at Harvard. Holmes also popularized several terms, including "Boston Brahmin" and "anesthesia". The Maps and Charts Taken from Actual Surveys, & the Plans and Views Drawn on the SpotAuthor: Arthur Phillip - Captain (later Admiral) Arthur Phillip RN was the first Governor of New South Wales and founder of the settlement which became Sydney. After much experience at sea, including command of a ship that was saved in a storm by convicts, Phillip sailed with the First Fleet, as Governor-designate of the proposed British penal colony of New South Wales. In February 1788, he selected its location to be Port Jackson (now Sydney Harbour).Phillip was a far-sighted governor, who soon saw that New South Wales would need a civil administration and a system for emancipating the convicts. But his plan to bring skilled tradesmen on the voyage had been rejected, and he faced immense problems of labor, discipline and supply. Also his friendly attitude towards the aborigines was sorely tested when they killed his gamekeeper, and he was not able to assert a clear policy about them. The arrival of the Second and Third Fleets placed new pressures on the scarce local resources, but by the time Phillip sailed home in December 1792, the colony was taking shape, with official land-grants and systematic farming and water-supply.Phillip retired in 1805, but continued to correspond with his friends in New South Wales and to promote the colony's interests. Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Title: The Wild Tribes of the Soudan: An Account of Travel and Sport, Chiefly in the Base Country. Being Personal Experiences and Adventures during Three Winters Spent in the SoudanAuthor: Frank Linsly James - Frank Linsly James FRGS was an English explorer. He was the son of American parents: Liverpool based merchant Daniel James and Sophia Hall (Hitchcock) James. He was born and raised in Liverpool; the 1861 census shows him living at his parents home Oakwood House, Elmswood Road, Aigburth, Liverpool. The 1871 census shows him again living at his parents home, but now at Beaconsfield House, Woolton, occupation "Under Graduate, Cambridge". In 1890 his home was 14 Great Stanhope Street,[1] in the county of Middlesex (Possibly now Stanhope Gate London W1).James explored in Sudan, Somalia, India and Mexico often using his private yacht Lancashire Witch, often accompanied by one or both of his brothers - John Arthur James and William (Willie) Dodge James. After Frank's death Willie James used the Lancashire Witch for a period. The yacht was formerly used by Sir Thomas Hesketh. In 1894 the Lancashire Witch was purchased by the Admiralty and became the survey vessel HMS Waterwitch.Frank James wrote "Wild Tribes of the Sudan" (1883) and "The Unknown Horn of Africa" (1888).He was killed in Gabon, West Africa by a wounded elephant. He was buried in Kensal Green Cemetery, exhumed in 1917 and re-interred in the family plot at West Dean, West Sussex. His writing was not without humour and in "The Unknown Horn of Africa" (p. 20), when seeking advice from British Agent - Langton Prendergast Walsh - on how best to procure camels and handlers for the expedition, he recalls: "Well, I felt I was nowhere and nohow. Berbera is hot place, and the superior physique of Mr. Walsh was beginning to tell; his energy and emphasis were oppressing without impressing me, and seemed to increase, as though he were receiving all I was losing. Another minute and I might have abandoned hope; but he paused for breath and Dualla shot in to the rescue". Obviously not amused, forty two years later Walsh devoted a chapter in his book "Under the Flag - and Somali Coast Stories" to the James expedition. He considers that he had been "held up to obloquy for my actions and attitude towards the James party". He is critical of the way the expedition was organized, and writes that he had to intervene to prevent the party being "wiped out and looted".Frank James is commemorated in the name of the Three-streaked Tchagra (Tchagra jamesi) and the Frank James Hospital, East Cowes, Isle of Wight. Description: Title: Sammy Tubbs, the Boy Doctor and "Sponsie," the Troublesome MonkeyAuthor: Edward B. Foote - Edward Bliss Foote, physician, birth control advocate, father of Edward Bond Foote, worked as a newspaper editor before studying medicine. An early advocate of public hygiene and the general dissemination of physiological knowledge, Foote opposed the elitism of the medical establishment as anti-democratic. His first book, "Medical Common Sense" (1858), was a home guide, written in a vernacular style, that dealt especially with sexual problems from a social as well as medical point of view. It sold very well and was reprinted many times (an enlarged version came out in 1870 under the title "Plain Home Talk, Embracing Medical Common Sense"). Its success made possible Foote's financial support of the Free Speech League, among other organizations and individuals. He also published his own journal, Dr. Foote's Monthly (1876-1896), wrote books for children (including a five volume saga of "Sammy Tubbs" the boy doctor published in 1875 that was meant to insruct children in the anatomy of human beings and other species), and issued various pamphlets. He ran several times for Congress as a Populist.(http://sunsite.berkeley.edu/Goldman/EditorsNotes/ebfoote.html)Publisher: Murray Hill Publishing Co.City: New YorkYear: 1876Binding Style: HardcoverNumber of Volumes: 4 Complete: YesWidth: 5" Height: 6.25"Book Details: This work, part of the "Science in Story" series, presents the story of an African-American child with the general purpose of teaching younger readers about a variety of subjects, while recognizing the racism of the period:"[Sammy Tubbs] is a little colored boy, and I ope you will not think him any the worse for that,. If he could have been asked before he as born what color he would rather be, he would have said white, without any doubt, not because our Creator does not like colored boys just as well as white ones, but because God's little and big children have a way of sticking up their noses at each other for some senseless reason..."
