Auction Description for Quinn's Auction Galleries Central Virginia: The Patrick Eddington "Cat Project" Auction
Auction Description:
Patrick Eddington (known as ‘Pat the Cat’) was a Utah-based artist, teacher, and cat-lover.  He carried on extensive correspondence throughout his life with a staggering number of writers and visual artists.  Eddington’s charming and persuasive letters convinced many to contribute to the Cat Project, an ambitious undertaking which Eddington described as follows in a letter dated 2004:       "This project is a labor of love. It will culminate as a large book and traveling exhibition. It will also help Best Friends Animal Sanctuary. I’ve asked individuals I admire to create cat-related works. They are not the typical cat images but creative works. I have over 240 works so far including work by: Günter Grass, William Wegman, Kiki Smith, Sandy Skoglund, Peter Milton, Robert Crumb, Keith Carter, Joel Peter Witkin, Jerome Witkin, Alison Saar, William Wiley, Ralph Steadman, Peter Beard, Gladys Nilsson, José Bedia, Haruki Murakami, David Lynch, Clive Barker, Mark Ryden, Ray Bradbury, Margaret   Atwood, Doris Lessing, Robert Williams, Al Hirschfeld, Leo and Diane Dillon, Lynda Barry, Roddy Doyle, Francisco Toledo, Flor Garduno, etc."       Eddington’s vision was sadly never realized, but his tenacity and appeal resulted in the creation of a wealth of fascinating letters and original art from creative luminaries around the world. A portion of the proceeds will benefit Best Friends Animal Sanctuary.

R. Crumb Letter with

Estimate: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Letter to Eddington with an ink drawing "Bernie Sitting on my Chest and Pawing My Face to Get My Attention". Drawing dated August '01 and letter dated Sep. 1st, '01. 9 3/4" x 6". Alternate spellings: R. Crumb. The letter reads: Mr. Eddington: I have before me EIGHT letters from you, dating from March of this year to August, in which, among other things, you mock me to China about doing a cat drawing. Well, Well, Here it is, Sir! I finally found myself clear to do this for you... I had it in mind for a long time... Our smart, strange little cat Bernie, who speaks with his eyes. The little punk can be very demanding, but is also extremely affectionate. SO, YA HAPPY??! Thanks for all the various things you've sent - books and I don't even remember what all, but I wore the Fred Astaire neck tie to a performance of The Cheap Suit Serenaders and showed it off to some people who were probably impressed. That portfolio of musician pictures that I made, along with other various silk-screen prints, are all sold out... They are made by a guy in Madison, Wisconsin, Alex Wood, who has a silk screen printing business called Wildwood Productions. The 78 RPM records I made with The Cheap Suit Serenanders (3 altogether) are also all long gone... I didn't care for the Nick Hornsby books - tried to read 'em but they failed to hold my interest. I passed them on to some American friends here who I though might like that sort of writing better than me. Thanks for the "Copulatin' Blues" - in fact, I already have all the original recordings of the tunes I like on that reissue, on 78! I'm a hard guy to please, huh? How do you know Wood Allen liked the World Musette Record?? Did you read that someplace? What was the context? I know that he likes old music, and I saw the documentary about his band by Barbara Koppit, Terry Zwigoff, who made the "Crumb" documentary, was offered the chance to make that documentary but turned it down after talking to Woody's producer, Jean Dumainian, who told him flat out that he could not have final editorial control. He couldn't abide that. Barbara Koppit took the job & the money, the film became a "puff piece" uncritical, and ultimately, not very interesting. Have you heard about Terry Zwigoff's latest film, "Ghost World"? Go see it if you get the opportunity and let me know what you think. That's all for now. -- R.C.
