In 1907 she was introduced by the picture dealer Clovis Sagot to Apollinaire, Picasso and their circle (she painted a group portrait of several of her famous friends in 1908; The Guests, Baltimore Museum of Art). For several years she lived with Apollinaire, and she exhibited with the Cubists. Her work, however, was entirely peripheral to the Cubist movement. She specialized in portraits of oval-faced, almond-eyed young girls painted in pastel colours, and although she borrowed a few tricks of stylization from her Cubist friends, her style remained essentially unaffected by them. Her work was lyrically charming and rather repetitive. From 1914 to 1920 she lived in Spain and Germany, then returned to Paris. Apart from paintings, her work included book illustrations and set and costume designs for the ballet and theatre.

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Artist Name: Marc ChagallTitle: The Angel Of JudgmentMedium: LithographEdition Size: Out of 5000Year: 1974Paper Size: 30 x 20.5 inchesImage Size: 20.5 x 17 inchesCondition: ExcellentBiography Marc Chagall, was a French painter, draughtsman, printmaker, designer, sculptor, ceramicist and writer. A prolific artist, Chagall distinguished himself as an expressive colourist. His work is characterized by his consistant use of folkloric imagery and vibrant colour. His style, although developed in the years before World War I, underwent little progression throughout his long career. Though he preferred to be known as a Belarussian artist, following his exile from the Soviet Union in 1923 he was recognized as a major figure of the Ecole de Paris, especially in the later 1920s and the 1930s. In his last years he was regarded as a leading artist in stained glass. His emblematic irrationality shook off all outside influences while his compositions were based on colour, calling up chimerical processions of memory where reality and the imaginary are woven together into a legendary artist.  A painter-poet celebrated by Apollinaire and Cendrars, Chagall brought back the forgotten dimension of metaphor into French formalism.

Toulouse-Lautrec Divan Japonais Litho Reeves Rag Paper

Lot 40018: Toulouse-Lautrec Divan Japonais Litho Reeves Rag Paper

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description:     Artist: Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec    Title: Divan Japonais    Medium: Lithograph on reeves rag paper    Publisher: Bank Street Atilier    Edition: Out of 2000    Size: 31" x 23 7/8"    Condition: ExcellentBiographyHenri de Toulous-Lautrec (1864-1904) debt to the Impressionists, in particular the more figurative painters Manet and Degas, is apparent. His style was influenced by the classical Japanese woodprints which became popular in art circles in Paris. In his works can be seen parallels to Manet's detached barmaid at A Bar at the Folies-Bergère and the behind-the-scenes ballet dancers of Degas. He excelled at capturing people in their working environment, with the colour and the movement of the gaudy night-life present but the glamour stripped away. He was masterly at capturing crowd scenes in which the figures are highly individualized. At the time that they were painted, the individual figures in his larger paintings could be identified by silhouette alone, and the names of many of these characters have been recorded. His treatment of his subject matter, whether as portraits, scenes of Parisian night-life, or intimate studies, has been described as both sympathetic and dispassionate. Toulouse-Lautrec's skilled depiction of people relied on his painterly style which is highly linear and gives great emphasis to contour. He often applied the paint in long, thin brushstrokes which would often leave much of the board on which they are painted showing through. Many of his works may best be described as drawings in coloured paint.

Description: This Surrealistic scene is full of human drama, with figures distorted in body, and expressive in their interactions. Artist: Roberto Sebastian Matta Signature: "Matta" in pencil, lower rightTitle: UntitledNumber: XIV/L, marked lower leftMedium: Lithograph on paperImage size: 19 x 25 inchesFraming: Matted in light gray, in gold painted wood frameFrame size: 27 1/2 x 33 1/2 inchesCondition: Excellent Biography: Born in Chile, Roberto Sebastian Matta (1911-2002) was a relative latecomer to Surrealism. Originally trained as an architect and interior designer, he left Chile for Paris in 1932 to work as a draftsman in the Paris studio of Le Corbousier. Frederico Garcia Lorca introduced him to Salvador Dali, who encouraged him to show his drawings to Andre Breton. Matta joined the Surrealists in 1937, and his work was included in the international Surrealist exhibit in Paris in 1938. The artist spent the next eight years in New York, where he became a major influence in American Surrealism and incipient Abstract Expressionism. Matta, in turn, was influenced by what he called the "untamable nature" of America. He met Marcel Duchamp and his imagination was engaged by the often tempestuous relationship between man and machine. He began to create a new imagery based on ancient Mexican symbols to express the dilemma of modern man in a technological world. Always powerful, always provocative and always fresh, the work of Robert Sebastian Matta continues to astonish, delight and incite the viewer.

Kadir Nelson Morning Patrol

Lot 40022: Kadir Nelson Morning Patrol

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Nelson, "Morning Patrol" pays homage to the African American soldiers who, after the end of the Civil War, were stationed in the west to protect mail routes, Pacific Railroad workers and payroll wagons, string miles of telegraph wire, build and maintain forts, and establish law and order in a vast area of outlaws, Mexican Revolutionaries and raiding hostile Indians. Possibly as a form of respect, Plains tribes named these worthy antagonists "Buffalo Soldiers," a name derived from the similarity they saw between the buffalo coats the soldiers wore and the texture of their hair. During an early morning patrol, this Tenth Cavalry soldier grabs his pistol as he hears something stirring in the background.Artist: Kadir Nelson Title: Morning PatrolMedium: PrintEdition: Out of 850 Paper Size: 34 x 26 3/8 Image Size: 30 x 22 3/8BiographyKadir Nelson is an award-winning American artist whose works have been exhibited in major national and international publications, institutions, art galleries, and museums.  Many of Nelson's paintings are in the collections of notable institutions and public collections, including the U.S. House of Representatives and the National Baseball Hall of Fame, as well as in the private collections of actors, professional athletes, and musicians.  Received from: http://www.kadirnelson.com/Artist-Biography.html

Description: Artist Name: Larry RiversTitle: Dutch MastersMedium: Mixed MediaSignature: Signed and numbered by artistEdition Size: Printers Proof out of 7Year: 1991Size: 32 x 40 inchesCondition: ExcellentNotes: Serigraph with Lacquer and Oil on Arches paper.BiographyPainter and sculptor Larry Rivers was born in New York City in 1923. In the 1950s, he became one of the first artists to explore the figurative style which follows abstract expressionism. With the use of illustrative material from advertising and familiar paintings, Rivers produced works that have a broader public appeal than those of pure abstraction. His landscapes, portraits and figure studies of the early 1950s were considered reactionary by contemporary critics because of their realistic drawings and structure. While Rivers's style strikes a balance between abstract expressionism and realistic renderings, his work retains the influence of Hoffman in its free, painterly brushwork. Tightly drawn images float ambiguously in space with blurred images and smears. These blurred, smudgy images were not accidental, but part of a deliberate process.Areas of canvas sometimes remain bare and devoid of color. Rivers's use of these bare areas has been compared with Cezanne's watercolor technique. The intentionally unfinished areas emphasize the process of painting.

Description: Artist: Mary Anne RoseTitle: PanMedium: Acrylic on CanvasImage Size: 26" x 22"BiographyAlthough I was taught painting by Abstract Expressionists, my years living abroad opened me to other perspectives and local histories of art, an experience which shaped not only my approach to painting, but my research interests as well. Thus, my interest in expatriate experience and artists' lives led me to working with creative case studies, raising questions about expatriate experience as a creative construct. The relevance of nationality, gender, culture, race, and social context to the professional development of artists' careers is undeniable; comparisons of artistic and professional development of different generations of American women artists in post-WW II Europe led to questions about experiences of artistic mentorship and support. My recent interests have led me to research African American expatriate artists in Paris and Scandinavia after the Second World War. Received from: http://www.herbertgentry.com/Art_Education.php

When he was only nine years old, the Nazis sent Tarkay to Mathausen concentration camp. After the war, he returned home and developed an interest in art. While still a student, he won a prize for excellence in painting. In 1949, Tarkay and his family immigrated to Israel and were sent to a transit camp for new arrivals at Beer Ya'akov. Their next two years were spent in a Kibbutz. In 1951, Tarkay received a scholarship to the Bezalel Art Academy in Jerusalem, where he studied for a year before having to leave due to difficult financial circumstances at home. In order to continue his scholarship, he was allowed to study under the artist Schwartzman until his mobilization to the Israeli army. After returning to the familiar environment of Tel Aviv, Tarkay enrolled in the Avni Institute of Art, which he graduated in 1956. His teachers there were Mokady, Janko, Schtreichman and Sematsky. Tarkay has since exhibited extensively both in Israel and abroad, and his works can be found in many public and private collections.
