WOMAN WITH RIBBON, by L. A. Bisson.

Lot 156: WOMAN WITH RIBBON, by L. A. Bisson.

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: WOMAN WITH RIBBON, by L. A. Bisson. 1/4 plate daguerreotype in oval view passepartout with hanging hook, with original label by L.A. Bisson, Fils, Rue St. Germain, on verso. The label advertises his "Portraits au Daguerreotype, à l'ombre, à l'intérieur et en quelques secondes Perfectionnés." It also advertises his daguerreian reproductions of various items. The passepartout is 6 x 4 7/8 - inches. The mat has a decorative "L.A.B." embossed beneath the oval. Louis Auguste Bisson went into partnership with his brother August-Rosalie in the early 1840's, so this precedes the partnership, in the very early 1840's. The package that had been open has been conserved to contemporary archival standards. The fine plate was untouched. The back of the blue sealing tape has a beautiful pattern. The subject, identified in pencil verso as Elisa Maillot, has a shy alluring expression with a turn of her head and open eyes. This is far from the stiff posing of many daguerreotypes from this early era. There is a wispy landscape behind. [4-]

MAN, GLOBE ON THE TABLE, by L.A. Bisson.

Lot 157: MAN, GLOBE ON THE TABLE, by L.A. Bisson.

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: MAN, GLOBE ON THE TABLE, by L.A. Bisson. 1/9 plate daguerreotype, sealed with white tape, green tape across the back, with similar label as the previous, but being smaller, it lacks the information about reproductions. The man, identified in pen on verso as "grandfather Frederick Powell," leans his arm on a table. Next to his arm a small globe on a stand rests on two books. This may indicate his occupation. The backdrop contains a window and creates a geometric framing within the oval mat opening. The image is slightly light, with a very fine wispy scratch running diagonally down from upper left, only visible at one angle. [D2+]

GIRL READS, DOG IN FRONT.

Lot 159: GIRL READS, DOG IN FRONT.

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: GIRL READS, DOG IN FRONT. European ¼ plate daguerreotype in passepartout with gold frame around the plate. This is taken in a room of a house, not a studio. The girl's legs stretch out on the interesting chair. The shutter at upper right, the flowers growing from a pot, the turned head of the dog, all contribute to a fine composition with depth from foreground to background. There's a scratch on the bottom of the cover glass, and very fine wipes can be seen with strong illumination at an angle. Has been rebacked and resealed. There's a slight tarnish haze. [D3]

Description: GIRL TURNED IN CHAIR, BY BARRABLE. ¼ plate daguerreotype in oval mat, in full case with repaired spine, gilded logo on the case for J. C. Barrable, Photographer, 244 Regent St. The pose is engaging and unconventional. The daguerreotypist has taken advantage of the girl's independent spirit and lets her show it. Just short of rich, with very mild scratch at 11:00 o'clock. Provenance: Witkin collection to John Wood to consignor. [D3]

Description: WOMAN IN BLUE BY KILBURN. ¼ plate daguerreotype in worn case with Kilburn's logo. There are clouds behind, a column at right. The decorative molding of the table is nicely rendered. Description: NUDE STEREOSCOPIC DAGUERREOTYPE. The model is posed to show her profile against a plain silver backdrop. It emphasizes her derriérre. The only decorative features are the pillow and bowl on a table peeping in at the right edge. Nicely resealed. [4]

AMERICAN FACTORY COMPLEX.

Lot 163: AMERICAN FACTORY COMPLEX.

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: AMERICAN FACTORY COMPLEX. 1/4 plate daguerreotype. A broad view of a group of buildings devoted to some manufacture on a large scale. Several buildings have square chimneys, and smoke blows to the left from the leftmost ones. Barrels are arranged on the grounds to the right of the front of that building. The land is flat, the leaves of the trees stir in the wind. It should be possible to identify the type of production that takes place here, and even the very location. A fine image of a very rare subject. [4]

FARM IN WINTER.

Lot 164: FARM IN WINTER.

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: FARM IN WINTER. 1/4 plate daguerreotype in stippled octagonal mat, separated case cover with rose silk pad. This is a typical Northeast structure with a low building connecting the house to the barn. There are interesting symbols on top of the house door. There is a wagon in the dark lower left. The four bare trees have a strong effect on the character of the picture, and add greatly to its appeal. The dark somewhat uneven line at the top could suggest that this is a copy, but everything is sharp. [3+]

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: MEN AND DOGS IN THE SNOW. ¼ plate daguerreotype in full case. There are 3 dogs. One is partly hidden at the man's right. There is a wonderfully appealing relationship between the face of the white dog and the man's face above it. Another man leans at left. The soft background adds to the art of the picture. Ryan Buckley has painstakingly deciphered what has been scratched onto the back of the plate. Storm the gray hound Bruno the newfoundland belonging to I.E. Glen R Brock [?] the bulldog Belonging to Shony [?] & Lewis & Shaw the one who had taken care of Bruno H A 1852 Northampton [Mass.] Small wispy scratch in lower right. [D4]

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: WINTER CROWD IN FRONT OF L.L. & E.R. SMITH STORE. 1/6 plate ambrotype in full case. What immediately attracted me was the centipede-like arrangement of legs in a line across the center. A sleigh is visible to the right of the group. There is a mystery here. There are no girls or women in the group of boys and men. This is not a school picture nor the 1850 Daguerreian Society Symposium. What brings them all together to pose before this store? I wondered whether this was the photography establishment, but there is no indication of that. [3+]

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: STREET SCENE IN DUNDEE NEW YORK. Detailed 1/2 plate ambrotype is a wide-angle view looking down the street with buildings on either side including Dundee House and Dundee Clothing Store. The skylight over the clothing store shows the location of the photographer's studio. A nice feature is the group of children posing seated in the street . Curiously the image plate is backed by another ambrotype, a portrait. I've seen tintypes used as backing, but never before an ambrotype. In a very fine case. [4-]

Lot 168: SOUTHWORTH & HAWES POST MORTEM

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: SOUTHWORTH & HAWES POST MORTEM. Horizontal 1/4 plate, in a black pushbutton case, a beautiful example of this firm's post-mortem work. They would be called upon to memorialize the deceased children of well-off Boston families. The composition and lighting show their mastery. Although the child is deceased, she is portrayed as she would have been seen in life. A little sprig of flowers extends under her mouth. Provenance: M. Isenburg collection to John Wood to Harold Gaffin Collection. Illustrated in John Wood, "America and the Daguerreotype," Iowa City, 1991, p. 75. [3+]

POST MORTEM BY BRADY.

Lot 169: POST MORTEM BY BRADY.

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: POST MORTEM BY BRADY. ½ plate ambrotype in separated case. A striking and macabre image, with the face, heavily made up, appearing within the black background of her cloak and the cloth behind her. "M. B. Brady" is stamped on the mat. In contrast to the almost lifelike appearance of the subject of the previous daguerreotype, here the image presents the decay of the body in awful frankness . See the chapter by David E. Stannard in "America and the Daguerreotype," pp. 77 and following, for a discussion of the "strange preoccupation with putrefaction." A paper attached to the mat indicates this is Arletta Stevens, née Larian, "born in farm house (23d to 29th St.) " Aside from the power of the image itself, it is interesting to note that in this period of 1856 - 1865 there were still farms in this part of Manhattan. Description: BOY ON HOBBY HORSE. ¼ plate daguerreotype in a half case. Beside the obvious charm of the boy and the spectacular hobby horse, the special thing here is that not only are the buttons pricked, but so are points on the saddle blanket, reins etc. Because of the way the scanner refracts the light, the scan doesn't show these tiny sparkles to full effect. The girls in the first plate are angelic so the pet dove seems fitting. The two girls who stand beside the mother or older sister in the second plate seem not be the same as the two in the first. The older woman has a case on her lap similar to the one that houses these daguerreotypes. Both plates are similarly sealed, though the ones in the first are a little loose. There is some haze and dust under the glass. The plates look undamaged. Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: STUDY OF A WOMAN. 1/4 plate daguerreotype, a study of a woman with prim hair and dress. I find portraits like this to be interesting social/psychological studies. She isn't remarkably beautiful, though there's still a hint of sensuality in her pleasant face. How old is she? One can already see a certain resignation setting in. The hand at her left (to our right) has two rings. One can conjecture about her future, as she seem do be doing. Her care is showing in her face. In a fine but separated oversized case with a nicely gilded design on the cover. [3]

He wears a ring that has been gilded, but curiously the tip of the square has also been gilded. Since the catalog was published, someone has explained why that was gilded. "The reason that the tool is gilded: it is a folding rule with the brass "square joint". These were typically made of either boxwood with brass trim and fittings, or ivory with german silver. TWO GENTS FROM STAUNTON, VA.

Lot 180: TWO GENTS FROM STAUNTON, VA.

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: TWO GENTS FROM STAUNTON, VA. 1/6 plate in separated case. The men pose casually, each with one leg raised. This piece created quite a stir in the "Staunton News Leader" after the image had been cleaned by Casey Waters, to reveal hitherto obscured details. The man on the right had been identified as Edwin Merrill Cushing (1830 - 1903.) A player of the saxhorn, he became a founding member of the Mountain Saxhorn Band around the time the daguerreotype was made. During the Civil War it became Turner's Silver Cornet Band. Among his professional activities before and after the war was as an auctioneer, celebrated for having sold a 14-year old slave for $1500. He served as a member of the Confederate commissary department. Despite, or perhaps in addition to all this, this is an interesting casually posed double portrait. The unidentified man at left strokes his beard. Cushing has one hand on his raised knee, the other on his lap. The image is bright, with spots on the upper background and roughness at the right edge and bottom. [D2+]

He holds his M1851 Hardee hat with one side pinned up and the ostrich feather visible. The initial of his company, "F," is pinned inside the infantry insignia. The guard of his sword is visible next to his hat, the blade covered by his sash. A small revolver is tucked into the sash beneath his belt. A large wood-handled knife is on a sheath attached to his belt next to the belt plate. His watch chain hangs over it. Buttons and sword guard are finely gilded. Lot 186: "PHIL IN HIS SPORTSMAN'S DRESS" WITH DOG, BY WHITEHURST.

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: "PHIL IN HIS SPORTSMAN'S DRESS" WITH DOG, BY WHITEHURST. 1/2 plate daguerreotype in full case with original spine intact. The blue velvet pad has a large logo for J.H Whitehurst's Sky/ Light Gallery. The title is taken from a newspaper clipping attached to the dark velvet pad. It continues: "In two [we only have one of the pair - l.g.] very fine [sic] Daguerreotypes from Whitehurst's establishment, which lie before us, we have our friend PHILLIP DOUGHERTY, in his complete hunting armour, with his noble pointer, given him by Dr. RIVES, crouched down at his side, obedient to his command. The pictures are very good, and we never saw Phil to better advantage. His lasses will admire these portraits of him very much, and we are not sure but they will get him a wife.... though he bears his age very well, and ... fond of these sports of the field, and ... which try the metal of young men, .... he were married." [Parts of the text have been rubbed away but we can guess at them.] How unusual to have this newspaper account indicating that Dougherty is dressed in this finery in order to impress women. This is the mate-seeking dating site of the daguerreian era. It has been suggested that this is from Whitehurst's gallery in Richmond. But there is a small-town feeling to the newspaper article, as Dougherty and Dr. Rives are expected to be known to the readers. So this could be from one of his Southern galleries in a smaller location. The velvet pads would have been used for more than one Whitehurst gallery. There is a great deal of detail in his hunting finery. Sticking up from Phil's breast pocket is a leather-covered drinking flask. Horizontally above his waist is a double shot shake. The powder flask with its adjustable throw spout has been pricked and etched to show its surface. His hunting bag, covered with netting, is on his lap. There are overall light wipes, and a brief line on his nose. The splendor of the portrait and the interesting purpose indicated by the article easily compensate for the problematic condition. [D2+]

The image is on the back surface of the glass, so it seems to have depth. His jacket is open a bit, revealing a checkered shirt with a button or pin. Excellent condition. [4]

DOG IN THE SPOTLIGHT. AUTOCHROME.

Lot 200: DOG IN THE SPOTLIGHT. AUTOCHROME.

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: DOG IN THE SPOTLIGHT. AUTOCHROME. 6 1/2 x 4 1/2 - inch autochrome in a board frame with the imprint for "A. Lumiére & ses Fils - Lyon/ R. Dechavannes, Paris" - probably for a diascope (a viewer for large autochromes.) The Lumiére autochrome plates were sold into the early 1920's, so if the frame could have been purchased up to then, it would place this in the 1910 - 1920 period. It is a brilliant example of this first widespread early color process. The dog sits on a blue cloth over the chair covering. This has the feeling of being a precursor of a William Wegman photograph. Description: DOG IN THE FOLIAGE. Oversize (10 x 12 - inch) tintype, hand-colored. Has the impression of a previous arch-top mat, but now the full plate is housed in a wonderful wooden frame with chiseled pattern. We can see a bit of a blurry house in the background. A number "72386" and some undecipherable initials are painted in the bottom right corner--probably referring to the painter. [3+]

GROUP AT NIAGARA, BY BABBITT.

Lot 202: GROUP AT NIAGARA, BY BABBITT.

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: GROUP AT NIAGARA, BY BABBITT. Whole plate ambrotype in a full hinged case. There are a number of men in tall hats, some with black trousers, some with white ones, and ladies at the left. Only the man at the right looks at the camera, and he is too far away for his face to be seen. The ladies at left are busy conversing. The person showing something to the two ladies at the left does not have a tall hat, and is possibly associated with the photograph concession. A box-like object is attached to the tree at far left, and someone is seated at work. This ambrotype was the property of someone among this group of visitors, because their names are scratched on the mat beneath the people. From left to right, starting with the man walking to the left, they are Blossom, Cox, Thornton, Owens, Thomson, and Nagly. "Strangers" is written underneath the ladies and the gents with them, indicating they are not members of the same party. [4]

Lot 203: "AMERICAN FALLS FROM LUNA ISLAND" by PLATT D. BABBITT.

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: "AMERICAN FALLS FROM LUNA ISLAND" by PLATT D. BABBITT. 11 ½ x 9 ½ - inch collodion positive on glass, with title and Babbitt's signature very faint on the bottom margin, and ruled framing lines along all the margins. [It is unclear why those elements are so faint while the image itself is brilliantly rich and sharp.] An exhibition panel with four such glass positives, was sold at Christie's New York sale of April 5, 2000 for $58,750. It was dated 1873, and that was in the brief period when Babbitt made these positives, meant to hang in windows. In the notes to Christie's catalog entry there is an essay by Frank Goodyear that gives the context for these works. Much of Babbitt's work at Niagara, such as the previous lot, was made for tourists as a record of their visit. But in some of his daguerreotypes and stereo views he created images of the falls and surrounding features. I have seen many of these, and in my opinion this is his masterpiece of composition. It not only compares favorably, for example, with the glass views in the exhibition panel cited above, but stands among the masterpieces of 19th century landscape photography. Both the falls, the ice formation, and a bit of the foreground shore are dramatically presented, with the opposite shore above and the buildings framed in an indentation in the ice. The plate has been re-framed in an attractive wood frame. [4]

SLAVERY IN CUBA.

Lot 204: SLAVERY IN CUBA.

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: SLAVERY IN CUBA. 6 Stereo views on square yellow mounts from the "Scenes in Cuba--Vistas Cubanas" series published by Anthony, taken by George Barnard in 1860. The most important views in this series were the ones Barnard took of the activities of slaves working in the sugar and rum industry. [See Keith Davis, "George N. Barnard...." Kansas City, 1990, pp. 49 - 53.] The slave trade in the Caribbean, centered on sugar, was part of the larger exploitation of slaves in the New World that included the cotton-based industry in the nearby American South. Views of slavery in pre-emancipation Southern US are very rare, and few give such details of work and daily life as these. This group comprises most of the significant views from this aspect of the series. Includes 116, "Interior of a Spanish Kitchen," 119, "Plantation Scene, Drying the Bagasse," 168, "Plantation View, Kitchen of a Barracoon, with slaves variously occupied," 174, "Plantation View, The Cooper's Shop, " 176, "Plantation View. View in a Sugar mill. The fire-hole," and 178, "Interior of a Sugar house, Negroes making Sugar--an interesting operation." [3]
