There was a posthumous exhibition of Morisot's work at Galerie Durand-Ruel from March 5 to March 21 1896, organised by Degas, Monet, Renoir and Mallarmé, and assisted by Julie. RODIN, AUGUSTE. Autograph Note Signed - (ANS)

Lot 26: RODIN, AUGUSTE. Autograph Note Signed - (ANS)

Description: RODIN, AUGUSTE. ANS. ½p. 8vo. N.p., N.d. (c.1890). In French with translation: "I authorize Monsieur A. to photograph the grisaille sketch for the monument of Victor Hugo at the Pantheon." In 1791, the French National Assembly secularized the church of St. Genevieve which had originally been constructed to celebrate the return to good health of King Louis XV. The building then became a mausoleum in which worthy citizens were interred. Four months after Marat's admission [into the mausoleum] the populace by whom he had been idolized tore his sarcophagus from its place and threw it down the sewer. In his 'Les Misérables' [French novelist, poet, and playwright] Victor Hugo [1802-1885] tells of the discovery of [Marat's] shroud in 1805, (The Pantheon of Paris, The New York Times, June 21, 1885). The building was returned to sacred use during the reign of Emperor Louis Napoleon, but reverted again to secular application in 1885 and restored to the use voted to it by the revolution, so that Hugo, who did not want to be buried in a church, could be laid to rest there, (ibid.). Hugo died a national hero and was interred at the Panthéon where such French luminaries as Émile Zola, Marie Curie, Rousseau, Voltaire, and Alexandre Dumas also rest. In 1889 Rodin, who had secretly produced a bust of Hugo during the author's life despite his refusal to sit for the sculptor, was awarded the commission to create a monument for the Panthéon to honour the author. However, the following year, after reviewing the painted cartoons of Rodin's proposed sculpture referred to in our note, the committee unanimously rejected the design. Henceforth, Rodin divided his time between two sculptures the original design to be placed in a Paris garden and a new design for the Panthéon. Ultimately, neither made it to the Panthéon, because, like so much of Rodin's work, they were regarded as too unconventional. The note, though brief, touches on an important and controversial episode in Rodin's career. Folded with normal wear and in very good condition.. Unframed - (1)
