Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Betty Parsons American, 1900-1982 Head at the Top, 1973 Signed Betty Parsons, dated 1973 and inscribed as titled Paint on found wood assemblage Height 20 1/2 inches Provenance: Betty Parsons Foundation Exhibited: Summit Art Center, New Jersey, Works by Betty Parsons, Oct. 7-Nov. 4, 1979 The unexpected inheritance Betty Parsons received in 1959 enabled her to purchase land and build a Cliffside home in Southold, Long Island. A new development soon ensued in her art: gathering wood scraps that she found on the beach, she arranged them into sculptural constructions. What interested her in these "carpenter's throwaways"--as she called them-was that they bore traces of human use, evoking past narratives and former lives. "They tossed in the sea for I don't know how long," Parsons stated. "And then they washed ashore, broken and changed." To create these sculptures, she worked in an unhurried way, allowing the figurative and anthropomorphic associations to emerge as if on their own. At the same time, she drew from Native American, Pre-Columbian, and Folk sources. Totemic in character, Head at the Top reveals Parsons' unique blend of the archetypal and the whimsical.
