Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Title: The Life of Dr. Benjamin FranklinAuthor: Benjamin Franklin - Dr. Benjamin Franklin was one of the Founding Fathers of the United States. A noted polymath, Franklin was a leading author, printer, political theorist, politician, postmaster, scientist, musician, inventor, satirist, civic activist, statesman, and diplomat. As a scientist, he was a major figure in the American Enlightenment and the history of physics for his discoveries and theories regarding electricity. He invented the lightning rod, bifocals, the Franklin stove, a carriage odometer, and the glass 'armonica'. He formed both the first public lending library in America and the first fire department in Pennsylvania.Franklin earned the title of "The First American" for his early and indefatigable campaigning for colonial unity; as an author and spokesman in London for several colonies, then as the first United States Ambassador to France, he exemplified the emerging American nation. Franklin was foundational in defining the American ethos as a marriage of the practical and democratic values of thrift, hard work, education, community spirit, self-governing institutions, and opposition to authoritarianism both political and religious, with the scientific and tolerant values of the Enlightenment. In the words of historian Henry Steele Commager, "In a Franklin could be merged the virtues of Puritanism without its defects, the illumination of the Enlightenment without its heat." To Walter Isaacson, this makes Franklin "the most accomplished American of his age and the most influential in inventing the type of society America would become."Publisher: Josiah ParksCity: Montpelier, VermontYear: 1809Binding Style: HardcoverPagination: 202 pagesWidth: 4.5" Height: 7"Book Details: Condition / Notes: Antique volume is bound in full leather, with gilt-lettered spine label. Real Photo SPECIAL ANTIQUE & VINTAGE POSTCARDS Hand-Decorated Fabric Girlie Holiday

Lot 1009: Real Photo SPECIAL ANTIQUE & VINTAGE POSTCARDS Hand-Decorated Fabric Girlie Holiday

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Details: There are at least 450 cards in this very special postcard lot. The antique ones are particularly nice, and some of them are unusual. In addition to many extra-fine quality postcards, most of which celebrate holidays, there are 15 special postcards hand-decorated with embossing, embroidery, velvet fabric, ribbon or glitter. Interestingly, there are a half-dozen postcards that have become accidental palimpsests of the past. The velvet-trimmed cards have identical gold-printed frames, with corners decorated with good luck symbols: an anchor, a horseshoe, and a four-leaf clover; but on every card the emblem on the fourth corner has been torn off. Only one card bears the faintly embossed remains of the missing sign: it was a swastika. Obviously the card was manufactured when the swastika was a benign symbol of good luck, and forty years later someone couldn't bear the sight of it. The vintage category also contain some interesting items, including hand-tinted real photo cards, many with greetings in Italian, colorful chromolithographs, girlie or risque cards, scenes of Oswego, NY and other localities, and about 15 postcard folders. One card is a stereotypical piece of Black Americana, and other shows a Chinese man whose robe is made of real Chinese postage stamps. To inspect and acquire more detailed information about this lot, please attend our live preview before the auction.Condition / Notes: These condition of these cards ranges from good to excellent, with most in the very good range. His scathing assessment gave ammunition to those advocating a more aggressive Northern hand in Reconstruction: he wrote disparagingly of a widespread lack of education and culture, an undemocratic caste system, festering racial tensions, and entrenched anti-Union sentiment. His reports were published in The Atlantic and elsewhere, and the topic proved to be of such interest to Northern readers that some of his writings were gathered in an 1866 book, The South Since the War.In the congressional elections that year, advocates of much harsher policies toward the South swept to power, and for the following decade-known as the years of "Radical Reconstruction"-the South would be subjected to firm rules imposed by Congress." Morgan - Lewis Henry Morgan was a pioneering American anthropologist and social theorist, a railroad lawyer and capitalist. He is best known for his work on kinship and social structure, his theories of social evolution, and his ethnography of the Iroquois. Interested in what holds societies together, he proposed the concept that the earliest human domestic institution was the matrilineal clan, not the patriarchal family; the idea was accepted by most pre-historians and anthropologists throughout the late nineteenth century. Also interested in what leads to social change, he was a contemporary of the European social theorists Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels, who were influenced by reading his work on social structure and material culture, the influence of technology on progress. Morgan is the only American social theorist to be cited by such diverse scholars as Marx, Charles Darwin, and Sigmund Freud. Elected as a member of the National Academy of Sciences, Morgan served as president of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 1879.Morgan was a Republican member of the New York State Assembly (Monroe Co., 2nd D.) in 1861, and of the New York State Senate in 1868 and 1869.Publisher: Sage & Brother, PublishersCity: RochesterYear: 1851Printing Information: First EditionBinding Style: HardcoverPagination: xviii/477 pagesWidth: 6.5" Height: 9.25"Book Details: This work presents the complexity of Iroquois society in a path-breaking ethnography that was a model for future anthropologists, as Morgan presented the kinship system of the Iroquois with unprecedented nuance.Condition / Notes: Antique volume has been rebound in full leather, with bright gilt lettering to red spine label. Lot 1022: 12V THE WRITINGS OF JAMES RUSSELL LOWELL IN TEN VOLUMES 1893-1895 American Romantic Poet & Critic Fireside Poets New England

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Title: The Writings of James Russell Lowell in Ten VolumesAuthor: James Russell Lowell - James Russell Lowell was an American Romantic poet, critic, editor, and diplomat. He is associated with the Fireside Poets, a group of New England writers who were among the first American poets who rivaled the popularity of British poets. These poets usually used conventional forms and meters in their poetry, making them suitable for families entertaining at their fireside.Lowell graduated from Harvard College in 1838, despite his reputation as a troublemaker, and went on to earn a law degree from Harvard Law School. He published his first collection of poetry in 1841 and married Maria White in 1844. He and his wife had several children, though only one survived past childhood. The couple soon became involved in the movement to abolish slavery, with Lowell using poetry to express his antislavery views and taking a job in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, as the editor of an abolitionist newspaper. After moving back to Cambridge, Lowell was one of the founders of a journal called The Pioneer, which lasted only three issues. He gained notoriety in 1848 with the publication of "A Fable for Critics," a book-length poem satirizing contemporary critics and poets. The same year, he published "The Biglow Papers," which increased his fame. He went on to publish several other poetry collections and essay collections throughout his literary career.Maria White died in 1853, and Lowell accepted a professorship of languages at Harvard in 1854; he continued to teach there for twenty years. He traveled to Europe before officially assuming his role in 1856. He married his second wife, Frances Dunlap, shortly thereafter in 1857. That year Lowell also became editor of The Atlantic Monthly. It was not until 20 years later that Lowell received his first political appointment, the ambassadorship to Spain. He was later appointed ambassador to England. He spent his last years in Cambridge, in the same estate where he was born, and died there in 1891.Lowell believed that the poet played an important role as a prophet and critic of society. He used poetry for reform, particularly in abolitionism. However, Lowell's commitment to the antislavery cause wavered over the years, as did his opinion on African-Americans. Lowell attempted to emulate the true Yankee accent in the dialogue of his characters, particularly in "The Biglow Papers." This depiction of the dialect, as well as Lowell's many satires, was an inspiration to writers like Mark Twain and H.L. Mencken.Publisher: Houghton , Mifflin and CompanyCity: BostonYear: 1893-1895Binding Style: HardcoverNumber of Volumes: 12 Complete: YesWidth: 5.5" Height: 8"Book Details: Condition / Notes: Though stated to be in ten volumes, this collection has two additional volumes published in uniform format added to it, namely "Latest Literary Essays & Addresses" (1894) and "The Old English Dramatists" (1894).Antique set is bound in burgundy cloth, with gilt lettering to spines. Description: Title: The BibleAuthor: uncredited authorPublisher: Harper & Bros.City: New YorkYear: 1846Binding Style: HardcoverPagination: 1288Width: 10" Height: 13"Book Details: Condition / Notes: This is a very fine quality Victorian-era Bible was originally a gift presented to the Rev. Isaac Bird and his family. (They were related to the Van Lennep family, from whose estate this volume comes.) In addition to profuse and beautifully executed steel engravings, this Bible features the Apocrypha -- unusual for a Protestant Bible -- a concordance, index, glossary of names, tables of weights and measures, etc. The pages on which the family would record genealogical information (births, deaths, marriages) are blank. The front cover of this Bible is stamped with a picture of Trinity Church in Manhattan, and the back cover shows celebrants at an altar and Biblical symbols.Tucked into the pages of this Bible are three items, examples of Victorian ladies' handwork: a silk bookmark decorated with punchwork embroidery, a cut paper religious decoration, and a lovely pen and ink drawing (8-3/4" x 11-1/2") dated 24 August 1858.The front board has separated from this Bible, which is otherwise in good condition.Henry J. Van Lennep (1815-1889) was a noted nineteenth century minister, missionary, writer, illustrator, and educator. Born in Smyrna, Van Lennep was educated in the U.S. but returned to Turkey upon ordination, where he served as missionary for 29 years. During this time, he traveled extensively throughout western Asia and Egypt, aided by his proficiency in many languages. A skillful artist, he wrote and illustrated several books based on his travels. Published during a time when public curiosity about "the Orient" was high, these books were very popular, showing the scenery, people, and customs of Asia Minor, and discussing these elements with Biblical and archaeological references. He also illustrated scientific texts with the noted geologist and President of Amherst College, Edward Hitchcock. After losing his sight in 1869, he returned to the U.S., where he spent the last twenty years of his life teaching natural sciences and languages at Ingham University, a women's college in Le Roy, New York, and later serving as co-principal at the Sedgwick Institute in Great Barrington, Massachusetts, with his son, Edward. The provenance of this material can be traced directly back to Henry Van Lennep through four generations of his descendants.
