Returning to America, he entered the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and was graduated from there in 1875. For several years he practiced medicine, and then forsook the profession for finance at the behest of his wife's family, establishing the Wall Street firm of W. S. Webb & Co. Eliza's brother George went on to create the Biltmore Estate, one of America's grandest country estates. In 1883, Webster Wagner, the president of the Wagner Palace Car Company, was crushed between two of his own railroad cars. Vanderbilt owned a controlling interest in the company, and asked his new son-in-law to take over the firm. William Seward invited his brother H. Walter Webb to join him, which started them both on careers in the railroad business. The Wagner Palace Car Company was subsequently merged with the Pullman Company. Dr. Webb later became President of the Fulton Chain Railway Company, the Fulton Navigation Company, and the Raquette Lake Transportation Company. He was the builder and President of the Mohawk and Malone Railway. His railroads were instrumental in opening the Adirondacks to the tourism rush of the mid- to late 19th century.Dr. Webb served as Inspector General of the Vermont militia with the rank of Colonel. Lot 7008: Richard Nixon 1999: VICTORY WITHOUT WAR 1988 Author-Signed Reflections On Foreign Policy Superpowers USSR China Iran Third World

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Title: 1999: Victory without WarAuthor: Richard Nixon - Richard Milhous Nixon was the 37th President of the United States, serving from 1969 to 1974. The only president to resign the office, Nixon had previously served as a US representative and senator from California and as the 36th Vice President of the United States from 1953 to 1961.Nixon was born in Yorba Linda, California. After completing his undergraduate work at Whittier College, he graduated from Duke University School of Law in 1937, and returned to California to practice law. He and his wife, Pat Nixon, moved to Washington to work for the federal government in 1942. He subsequently served in the United States Navy during World War II. Nixon was elected to the House of Representatives in 1946 and to the Senate in 1950. His pursuit of the Hiss Case established his reputation as a leading anti-communist, and elevated him to national prominence. He was the running mate of Dwight D. Eisenhower, the Republican Party presidential nominee in the 1952 election. Nixon served for eight years as vice president. He waged an unsuccessful presidential campaign in 1960, narrowly losing to John F. Kennedy, and lost a race for Governor of California in 1962. In 1968, he ran again for the presidency and was elected.Although Nixon initially escalated America's involvement in the Vietnam War, he subsequently ended US involvement in 1973. Nixon's visit to the People's Republic of China in 1972 opened diplomatic relations between the two nations, and he initiated detente and the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty with the Soviet Union the same year. Domestically, his administration generally embraced policies that transferred power from Washington to the states. Among other things, he initiated wars on cancer and drugs, imposed wage and price controls, enforced desegregation of Southern schools and established the Environmental Protection Agency. Though he presided over Apollo 11, he scaled back manned space exploration. He was reelected by a landslide in 1972.Nixon's second term saw an Arab oil embargo, the resignation of his vice president, Spiro Agnew, and a continuing series of revelations about the Watergate scandal. The scandal escalated, costing Nixon much of his political support, and on August 9, 1974, he resigned in the face of almost certain impeachment and removal from office. After his resignation, he was controversially issued a pardon by his successor, Gerald Ford. In retirement, Nixon's work authoring several books and undertaking many foreign trips helped to rehabilitate his public image as an elder statesman. He suffered a debilitating stroke on April 18, 1994, and died four days later at the age of 81. Nixon remains a source of considerable interest among historians and the public.Publisher: Simon and SchusterCity: New YorkYear: 1988Printing Information: Signed EditionBinding Style: HardcoverPagination: 336 pagesWidth: 6.75" Height: 9.75"Book Details: Condition / Notes: This is a scarce presentation copy of the third printing of this work, signed by the 37th President of the United States. 4V ANTIQUE PAMPHLETS CONCERNING THE MIDDLETON DIVORCE CASE 1850 Pennsylvania History Petitions To Legislature Testimony Public Attitudes

Lot 7015: 4V ANTIQUE PAMPHLETS CONCERNING THE MIDDLETON DIVORCE CASE 1850 Pennsylvania History Petitions To Legislature Testimony Public Attitudes

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Book Details: This lot includes the group of antique pamphlets shown in the corresponding image(s). Four pamphlets bear the following titles: "Paper book ... Petition of Edward Middleton to the General Assembly of Penna. for a divorce from his wife," "In the matter of tthe petition of Edward Middleton ... statement &c of the respondent," In the matter of the petition of Edward Middleton for a divorce. To the Legislature of Pennsylvania," and "Middleton Divorce Case." First three in old light blue paper wraps with minor chipping, spine of first pamphlet worn, fourth pamphlet sewn without wraps. 52 + 18 + 15 + 6 pp. Middleton, a naval officer from South Carolina, had a distinguished career and retired as rear admiral in 1876; he was a grandson of a Signer of the Declaration of Independence. He and Edwardina De Normann were married in Italy. The correspondent in this action was Harry McCall of Philadelphia, described as her cousin. Puteanum Consiliarum Regium in Suprema Curia ParisiensiAuthor: Catallus - Gaius Valerius Catullus was a Latin poet of the late Roman Republic who wrote in the neoteric style of poetry. His surviving works are still read widely, and continue to influence poetry and other forms of art., Propertius - Sextus Propertius was a Latin elegiac poet of the Augustan age. He was born around 50-45 BC in Assisium and died shortly after 15 BC.Propertius' surviving work comprises four books of Elegies. He was friends with the poets Gallus and Virgil and, with them, had as his patron Maecenas and, through Maecenas, the emperor Augustus., Tibullus - Albius Tibullus was a Latin poet and writer of elegies. Little is known about his life. His first and second books of poetry are extant; many other texts attributed to Tibullus are of questionable origins. There are only a few references to him in later writers and a short Life of doubtful authority. His praenomen is not known, nor is his birthplace and his gentile name has been questioned. His status was probably that of a Roman knight (so the Life affirms); and he had inherited a considerable estate. But, like Virgil, Horace and Propertius, he seems to have lost most of it in 41 BC amongst the confiscations of Mark Antony and Octavian. Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Title: The Collected EditionAuthor: Graham Greene - Henry Graham Greene, OM, CH, was an English writer, playwright and literary critic. His works explore the ambivalent moral and political issues of the modern world. Greene was noted for his ability to combine serious literary acclaim with widespread popularity.Although Greene objected strongly to being described as a Roman Catholic novelist rather than as a novelist who happened to be Catholic, Catholic religious themes are at the root of much of his writing, especially the four major Catholic novels: "Brighton Rock" (1938), "The Power and the Glory" (1940), "The Heart of the Matter" (1948) and "The End of the Affair" (1951). Several works such as "The Confidential Agent" (1939), "The Third Man" (1949), "The Quiet American" (1955), "Our Man in Havana" (1958) and "The Human Factor" (1978) also show an avid interest in the workings of international politics and espionage.Greene suffered from bipolar disorder, which had a profound effect on his writing and personal life. In a letter to his wife Vivien, he told her that he had "a character profoundly antagonistic to ordinary domestic life", and that "unfortunately, the disease is also one's material". William Golding described Greene as "the ultimate chronicler of twentieth-century man's consciousness and anxiety." Greene never received the Nobel Prize in Literature, though he finished runner-up to Ivo Andrić in 1961. Immanuel Velikovsky AGES IN CHAOS 1952 Author-Signed Controversial Revisionist Account Of Ancient History Egypt Exodus Plates

Lot 7032: Immanuel Velikovsky AGES IN CHAOS 1952 Author-Signed Controversial Revisionist Account Of Ancient History Egypt Exodus Plates

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Title: Ages in ChaosAuthor: Immanuel Velikovsky - Immanuel Velikovsky was a Russian-Jewish psychiatrist and independent scholar, best known as the author of a number of controversial books reinterpreting the events of ancient history, in particular the US bestseller "Worlds in Collision," published in 1950. Earlier, he played a role in the founding of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in Israel, and was a respected psychiatrist and psychoanalyst. His books use comparative mythology and ancient literary sources (including the Old Testament) to argue that Earth suffered catastrophic close contacts with other planets (principally Venus and Mars) in ancient times. In positioning Velikovsky among catastrophists including Hans Bellamy, Ignatius Donnelly, and Johann Gottlieb Radlof, the British astronomers Victor Clube and Bill Napier noted "... Velikovsky is not so much the first of the new catastrophists ...; he is the last in a line of traditional catastrophists going back to mediaeval times and probably earlier." Velikovsky argued that electromagnetic effects play an important role in celestial mechanics. He also proposed a revised chronology for ancient Egypt, Greece, Israel and other cultures of the ancient Near East. The revised chronology aimed at explaining the so-called "dark age" of the eastern Mediterranean (c. 1100-750 BC) and reconciling biblical history with mainstream archaeology and Egyptian chronology. In general, Velikovsky's theories have been ignored or vigorously rejected by the academic community. Nonetheless, his books often sold well and gained an enthusiastic support in lay circles, often fuelled by claims of unfair treatment for Velikovsky by orthodox academia. The controversy surrounding his work and its reception is often referred to as "the Velikovsky affair" (Courtesy of Wikipedia)Publisher: Doubleday & Co., Inc.City: Garden City, New YorkYear: 1952Printing Information: Signed EditionBinding Style: HardcoverPagination: xxiv/350 pages plus 9 unnumbered pages of extracts/summaries from reviews of "Worlds in Collision"Width: 6" Height: 8.5"Book Details: "Ages in Chaos" is a book by the controversial writer Immanuel Velikovsky, first published by Doubleday in 1952, which put forward a major revision of the history of the Ancient Near East, claiming that the histories of Ancient Egypt and Ancient Israel are five centuries out of step. It bears the subtitle "From the Exodus to King Akhnaton."This is a scarce author-signed edition of this work. Description: Title: C. Corn: Tacitus ex Recensione I. LipsiiAuthor: Tacitus - Publius (or Gaius) Cornelius Tacitus was a senator and a historian of the Roman Empire. The surviving portions of his two major works-the Annals and the Histories-examine the reigns of the Roman Emperors Tiberius, Claudius, Nero, and those who reigned in the Year of the Four Emperors (AD 69). These two works span the history of the Roman Empire from the death of Augustus in AD 14 to the years of the First Jewish-Roman War in AD 70. There are substantial lacunae in the surviving texts, including a gap in the Annals that is four books long.Other writings by him discuss oratory (in dialogue format, see "Dialogus de oratoribus"), Germania (in "De origine et situ Germanorum"), and the life of his father-in-law, "Agricola," the Roman general responsible for much of the Roman conquest of Britain, mainly focusing on his campaign in Britannia ("De vita et moribus Iulii Agricolae").Tacitus is considered to be one of the greatest Roman historians. He lived in what has been called the Silver Age of Latin literature. He is known for the brevity and compactness of his Latin prose, as well as for his penetrating insights into the psychology of power politics.Publisher: Apud Guiliel: I CaesiumCity: AmsterdamYear: 1623Binding Style: HardcoverPagination: 525 pages +21 unnumbered pages of index and 8 pages of supplementary materialWidth: 3" Height: 4.75"Book Details: Condition / Notes: Antique volume is bound in contemporary vellum, somewhat darkened with some staining at edges, two different traces of "Tacitus" written in ink on spine, and edges folded over. There, a few years later, Joseph's younger brother, the more famous Thomas Warton, was born. Their father later became an Oxford professor.Joseph was educated at Winchester College and at Oriel College, Oxford, and followed his father into the church, becoming curate of Winslade in 1748. In 1754, he was instituted as rector at The Church of All Saints, Tunworth. In his early days Joseph wrote poetry, of which the most notable piece is "The Enthusiast" (1744), an early precursor of Romanticism. In 1755, he returned to his old school to teach, and from 1766 to 1793 was its headmaster, but it was a role in which he did not distinguish himself. Vintage Original MARA KAY TYPEWRITTEN MANUSCRIPTS The Burning Candle The Youngest Lady-in-Waiting Children's Literature YA Novels

Lot 7048: Vintage Original MARA KAY TYPEWRITTEN MANUSCRIPTS The Burning Candle The Youngest Lady-in-Waiting Children's Literature YA Novels

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Details: Two truly special items comprise this lot: original typewritten, carbon copies of the manuscripts of two novels for older children. "The Burning Candle," was published in 1968 and "The Youngest Lady-in-Waiting" was published in 1971, both by Mara Kay, a writer with a mysterious past who died in 1990. She was born in Russia and grew up in Yugoslavia, but listed herself as "stateless" when she entered the U.S. in 1950. She spoke six languages, and worked as a secretary in New York City. One of the places she worked was Selva & Sons, which made shoes (including ballet pointe shoes. Kay's 1973 novel, "A Circling Star," is about a servant girl in a ballet school.) While at Selva, Kay's manager found her an empty office in which she worked on her "The Burning Candle" during her lunch hour. The manuscript pages of that novel in this lot are all carbons typed on the back of Selva advertisements. All together, Mara Kay wrote ten novels, which are still highly regarded -- and eminently collectible -- in the field of children's literature. To inspect and acquire more detailed information about this lot, please attend our live preview before the auction.Condition / Notes: These manuscripts are in very good condition. For lots which include only books, our shipping charge applies to any address within the fifty United States.
