Anthony Thieme Original Etching Plate - RARE!

Estimate: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Anthony Thieme (1888-1954) was a landscape and marine painter and a major figure of the Rockport (MA) School of American regional art. He was a contemporary of important Rockport artists Aldro Hibbard, Emil Gruppe, W. Lester Stevens, Antonio Cirino, and Marguerite Pierson. Born in Rotterdam on 20 February 1888, Thieme studied at the Academie of Fine Arts in Rotterdam for two years and then, briefly, at the Royal Academy, the Hague. He traveled widely in Europe, frequently finding work as a stage designer.Thieme traveled to the United States at the age of 22. He quickly found work as a stage designer at the Century Theater in New York, designing sets for the Russian ballerina Anna Pavlova. When the commission ended, he traveled to South America, primarily Brazil and Argentina. Stage work again provided his livelihood. A return to Europe followed with further work in England, France, and Italy. Returning to the United States with a contract for additional stage work, Thieme found himself in Boston. He discontinued work on the stage in 1928 and from then on made his living with the sales of his paintings and etchings. Thieme married Lillian Beckett in 1929 and moved to Rockport, MA. He established the Thieme School of Art. He exhibited his work frequently at the Grand Central Art Galleries in New York. He continued to travel widely; Mexico, Guatemala, Florida, and France were major destinations, always painting en plein air. Thieme committed suicide on 6 December 1954 in Greenwich, CT. The circumstances of his death are not fully understood. Anthony Thieme was a full member of the American Watercolor Society, Art Alliance of America, the Salmagundi Club, the Boston Art Club, North Shore Art Association, Rockport Art Association, New York Water Color Club, Art Alliance of Philadelphia and the National Arts Club. Original etching plate, title "Coach & Inn". Not sure if this is the actual title - its simply what is written on the envelope and above an etching [included] pulled from the plate. Original etching plates are very uncommon..VG

Walt Kuhn ORIGINAL COPPER etching plate

Estimate: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: WALT KUHN [1877-1949]. American painter. An ORIGINAL COPPER etching plate. The title is "MORNING". Typical Kuhn style. Plate size 4 x 6 in. This plate still has some life in it and etchings could be pulled from it. Very seldom does an original etching plate by an important artist ever reach the open market, as they usually are in institutional collections. Provenance: Kuhn Estate. It is difficult to get a good scan of this and the picture below isn't very good. He did not etch his initials or signatureinto the plate. I don't think he ever etched his signature into any of his plates although he sometimes would etch initials. This is guaranteed to be an authentic Walt Kuhn plate without a time limit to the original purchaser. We will send a letter of guarantee and provenance to the buyer. The portrait photo of Kuhn shown below IS NOT for sale. Kennedy Galleries [NYC] held an exhibition of Walt Kuhn prints during which it was indicated that there was only from 1 to 6 impressions ever pulled from this plate. Original plates by major artists seldom reach the open market and it is remarkable to see a plate that had so few prints pulled from it. A must for the SERIOUS Kuhn collector. Difficult to get a good scan of copper plates.Picture of Kuhn does NOT come with this plate.

Albert Sterner - Allegorical Painting

Estimate: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Albert Sterner (1863-1946) important artist born to American parents in London. He studied at the Julian Academy in Paris, France. He emigrated to the USA in 1881, moving first to Chicago and then to New York. Sterner was a noted painter, printmaker, and illustrator. Sterner did illustrations for Harper's and LIFE magazines, as well as several other publications. He was president of the Society of Illustrators (1907-1908) and later taught at the Arts Students League in New York (1918). He received many accolades and awards during his career. Lithography was pioneered in America by Albert Sterner (The Model, c. 1920), who with George Bellows (Parlor Critic, 1921) started the organization Painters-Gravers of America in New York in 1915. This was the first artist group committed to the development of lithography as a fine art medium in America and included artists John Sloan and Edward Hopper. George Bellows was introduced to fine art lithography by Sterner in 1916. Bellows was a quick study and soon became the leading printmaker of the Ashcan School. Offered here is a unsigned oil painting on stretched canvas by Sterner, 16 x 12 in. Framed. Frame in is good condition, however, we do not guarantee the condition of frames. You are bidding only on the painting - the frame is thrown in. This painting does have some condition problems: several small areas with painting loss [stratched - nicks] that are visible in the picture showing here. These can be easily restored. Pierre Henri Lamazou [1828-1883] French Bishop & Organist

Estimate: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Pierre Henri Lamazou [1828-1883] French Bishop (of Limoges and Amiens]. As the rector of St, Sulpice in Paris, he was a great supporter of the composer and organiste-titulaire (ie: officially appointed organist) of St. Sulpice, Alfred Léfebure-Wely, and promoted his music and his style of playing (which was rather lamboyant and showy...many of the time considered him not to be a good "church: organist, but rather a "concert" organist). He promoted and encouraged the use of the pipe organ in the rites of the Roman Catholic Church. When they tried to surpress the organ versets for the Te Deum (a big and rather long hymn of Thanksgiving with organ improvisations between choral Gregorian chant verses at the end of festive Roman Catholic services), Lamazou loudly protested and encouraged its continued usage. He wrote a short article/booklet in 1863 on the organ at St. Sulpice and the state of organ construction. In 1868, he wrote a two page article on the newly rebuilt Cavaillé-Coll organ at Notre Dame Cathedral (he had served on the commission for its restoration). Offered here is an ALS, Paris [France], 1867 2-1/2 pp, 4-3/4 x 7-1/4 in. Not translated. Fine.

Alexander William Williamson FRS (1824-1904) English chemist

Estimate: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Alexander William Williamson FRS (1824-1904) English chemist of Scottish descent. He is best known today for the Williamson ether synthesis. Williamson is credited for his research on the formation of unsymmetrical ethers by the interaction of an alkoxide with a haloalkane, known as the Williamson ether synthesis. He regarded ether and alcohol as substances analogous to and built up on the same type as water, and he further introduced the water-type as a widely applicable basis for the classification of chemical compounds. The method of stating the rational constitution of bodies by comparison with water he believed capable of wide extension, and that one type, he thought, would suffice for all inorganic compounds, as well as for the best-known organic ones, the formula of water being taken in certain cases as doubled or tripled. In 1863 five students from the Chōshū clan were smuggled out of Japan, which was a closed society. At the time, the laws of the Edo period made travel to another country a capital offence. After reaching London, they were placed under the guidance of Professor Williamson. He and his wife Catherine welcomed them, taught them English, introduced them to western society, and arranged for them to study Chemistry at University College London. Ito Shunsuke (later Ito Hirobumi), Endo Kinsuke and Nomura Yakichi (later Inoue Masaru) lived with the Williamsons, while Inoue Monta (later Inoue Kaoru), and Yamao Yozo lived nearby. They all later served in the Japanese government, and made enormous scientific and social contributions to the modernisation of Japan. Fourteen more international Japanese students, from the Satsuma clan, later worked with Williamson beginning in 1865. ALS, 1874, 2pp, black page mounted to another sheet. VG.

Father of Zachary Taylor - Kentucky 1819

Estimate: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Richard Taylor (1744-1829) was an officer in the Continental Army in the American Revolutionary War. He was the father of Zachary Taylor, the 12th President of the United States. Born in Orange County, Virginia, in 1769 he explored the Ohio River and Mississippi River with his older brother, Hancock Taylor, travelling from Pittsburgh to New Orleans. When the American Revolution began, Taylor became a 2nd lieutenant in the Virginia Continental forces on February 12, 1775, and fought in the battles of White Plains, Trenton, Brandywine, and Monmouth. He was discharged as a lieutenant colonel on September 12, 1781. After the war, Taylor became an Original Member of the Virginia Society of the Cincinnati. Taylor married Sarah Dabney Strother in 1779. They lived first at his plantation, "Hare Forest". However, he had acquired 8,000 acres throughout Kentucky, and with the return of peace in 1783, he started clearing the land to move his family there. They did so in 1785, and by 1790 he had built his home "Springfield", known today as the Zachary Taylor House. Taylor was also involved with the Valley Forge Campaign. In the Fall of 1777 Thomas Shoemaker's Gwynedd township house was first plundered by Washington's army, then occupied by Taylor and other officers who kept the foragers away. The troops commandeered livestock and hay for the army. The troops did not even leave a milk cow for the family with small children and when they bought a new one it was taken too. However, this was stopped by Capt.Richard Taylor, Capt. William Cunningham and Capt. Francis Taylor (all from Virginia and part of Greene's Corp). They had the prime offender arrested on 24 October 1777, and made him run the gauntlet after which the families in the neighborhood were no longer bothered. Richard Taylor told Thomas Shoemaker, he had "been in nine battles and would be in ninety-nine more before the British gained the day." During the Northwest Indian War, Taylor served as a volunteer in the Kentucky militia under Major John Adair. He was injured in a disastrous 1792 battle with Indians under Little Turtle near Fort St. Clair, site of the present Eaton, Ohio. By 1800, Taylor had enlarged "Springfield" to 700 acres by 1800. He remained active for the remainder of his life in Kentucky politics. He donated 60 acres for the creation of Taylorsville, Kentucky, which was named in his honor. Offered here is a 1819 document in which Richard Taylor sells property at Frankfort, Ky. to Robert Brenham for $3100. This document is signed by Richard Taylor & we believe Margaret M. Taylor [not Mary Ann Taylor, which the clerk writes below]. The basic document is written on both sides of a 7-3/4 x 9-3/4 in. sheet, with a second sheet containing 6 lines in the clerk's hand. Look like Richard Taylor has also signed for Margaret M. Taylor. Some separation at fold lines. Extremely Rare!!!!!..

Signed, inscribed 10x8 in. photo. Photographer is Steven Carras, a noted ballet photographer who danced for 14 years with the New York City Ballet, the company's co-founders George Balanchine and Lincoln Kirstein took early serious note of Caras' natural talent in photography. Forced to choose between the two, he would dance his last performance with the New York City Ballet in 1983, devoting his time thereafter exclusively to photography. Robert Willis (1800-1875) English academic

Estimate: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: [INVENTOR] The Reverend Robert Willis (1800-1875) English academic. He was the first Cambridge professor to win widespread recognition as a mechanical engineer, and first set the scientific study of vowels on a respectable foundation, but now best remembered for his extensive architectural writings, including a 4-volume treatise on the architecture of the University of Cambridge. Willis's theory of vowel production assumed a close correspondence between vowel production and the production of musical notes using an organ: the lung acted as a bellows, the vocal folds acted as the reed, and the mouth cavity acted as the organ pipe. Different vowels corresponded to mouth cavities(/organ pipes) of different lengths, which were independent of the properties or vibrations of the vocal folds(/reed). Willis's 1830 paper On vowel sounds, and on reed-organ pipes is usually given as the reference for this theory, and is often contrasted with Wheatstone's "harmonic" theory of vowel production.Russell devotes two chapters to the discussion of these two theories in his 1928 book on The Vowel , and Willis and Wheatstone figure prominently in the discussion of vowel theories given by Chiba and Kajiyama in their 1941 book of the same name. ALS, Cambridge, 1851, 2pp. He returns something which he fears he has kept too long / have looked on them carefully and made necessary alterations / return proofs of my plates which are very well executed, etc. VG. Pierre-Etienne MOITTE (1722-1780) French Engraver

Estimate: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: [ART - OLDMASTER] Pierre-Etienne MOITTE (1722, Paris, 1780, Paris) French engraver, part of a family of artists. He studied in Paris with Jacques-Firmin Beauvarlet and Pierre-François Beaumont (1719-1769). He was accepted in 1771 by the Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture and subsequently signed his prints 'Graveur du Roi'. Between c. 1747 and 1754 he was one of the principal engravers commissioned to work for the 'Cabinet de S.E.M. Le Comte de Brühl,' a collection published in Dresden in 1754 and consisting of 50 plates after selected paintings from the celebrated collection owned by Heinrich von Brühl. In addition to the Mystic Marriage of St Catherine after Correggio and three history subjects after Jean-Baptiste Corneille, Moitte contributed 11 masterly pieces after Dutch and Flemish paintings, including the Dutch Merchant and the Flemish Cook after Gerrit Dou; the Broken Egg, after Frans van Mieris the Elder; the Judgement of Paris after Rubens; four landscapes after Jacob van Ruisdael and Guillam Dubois (c. 1610-80); and Travellers' Rest and Horses at the Watering Trough after Philips Wouwerman. Moitte enjoyed a successful career in Paris by reproducing works after 18th-century French painters such as Nicolas Lancret, François Boucher and Pierre-Antoine Baudouin. Above all, he popularised sentimental genre paintings by Greuze, producing such prints as the Wrathful Mother, Repentance and the Idle Woman. Like most reproductive printmakers of the period, Moitte also engraved designs for book illustrations; thus he provided 17 plates after drawings by Jean-Baptiste Oudry for the four-volume folio edition of Jean de La Fontaine's Fables published between 1755 and 1759. Original engraving, from the 18th century, approx. 11-1/4 x 8-1/4". Wide margins. Old damp stains in bottom margin..

Bird Print by Alexander Wilson

Estimate: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: [DECORATIVE ART] Offered here is an original fine and exquisite antique Bird Print by Alexander Wilson circa 1877. The print is a chromolithograph. The colors are bright and the details are rich, the paper is clean. Approx. 8.5 x 5.5 _ inches. Drawn from nature by Alexander Wilson, and engraved by William H. Lizars. Fine and exquisite. William Home Lizars (1788-1859) Scottish painter and engraver. His father was a publisher and an engraver who had been a pupil of Andrew Bell, and engraved portraits as book illustrations. Lizars was first apprenticed to his father, from whom he learned engraving, and then entered as a student under John Graham in the Trustees' Academy at Edinburgh, where he was a fellow-student with Sir David Wilkie. In 1812, on the death of his father, Lizars had to carry on the business of engraving and copperplate printing in order to support his mother and family. Lizars met J. J. Audubon in Edinburgh in October 1826, introduced (on Audubon's account) with his portfolio by the naturalists Patrick Neill and Prideaux John Selby. So began an intense period when Lizars helped Audubon meet Edinburgh luminaries likely to be useful to him: Robert Jameson, David Brewster and James Wilson in particular. Lizars had a celebrated portrait of Audubon painted (it is now in the White House), by John Syme, in his wolfskin coat, in late November; and the following day took him to meet George Combe and other phrenologists. Lizars had agreed to publish Audubon's Birds of America. After a promising start, the business did not go well, and Audubon moved the production to London. The work was completed by the Havell family. Lizars perfected a method of etching which performed the functions of wood-engraving, for illustration of books. Lizars took an active part in the foundation of the Royal Scottish Academy. From 1808 to 1815, Lizars was a frequent exhibitor of portraits, and of sacred and domestic subjects, at exhibitions in Edinburgh.
