Lot 4828: Elsken, E. van der (1925-1990). (Crazy World).

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Elsken, E. van der (1925-1990). (Crazy World). Collection of 99 (double-p.) gelatin silver prints, incl. (divisional) titles (in total 5 photogr. titles), each 23x17,5 cm. (single-p.) or 23x35 cm. (double-p.), ±1962, bound in contemp. plain rexine. - Two double-p. photographs loose. Otherwise fine. = Model for a work by Van der Elsken that at first was to be titled "Crazy World", and which according to a pencil annotation on first free endpaper was intended to be published by Dumont-Schauberg. In 1966, about 4 years after its conception, it was published by various publishers (including Dumont) as "Sweet Life". The model consists of 5 sections: Africa (15x, incl. title); Malaya, The Straits, Singapore, The Philippines (12x, incl. title); Hong Kong (13x, incl. title); Japan (and USA) (42x, incl. title; possibly the divisional title for the USA is lacking) and Mexico (17x, incl. title). The main difference with Sweet Life is the inclusion of 27 double-p./ half-p./ full-p. photographs that are not present in Sweet Life. Furthermore the cropping of the photographs is occasionally different and the quality of the printing of the photographs is generally sharper and brighter than in the book. Parr/ Badger p.255: "(...) The epitome of this genre [the photographic essay], is, of course, Robert Frank's The Americans, but not far behind is Ed van der Elsken's epic photojourney - Sweet Life. Whereas Frank criss-crossed the United States, Van der Elsken was even more wide-ranging. Sweet Life is the result of a 14 month world-trip that he made in 1960-1, covering West Africa, the Malay Peninsula, The Philippines, Hong Kong, Japan, the United States and Mexico. (...) Van der Elsken's magnum opus. (...) Sweet Life is a sprawling, exuberant cornucopia, a preview of the pure stream-of-consciousness, machine-gun approach that would soon come with the Japanese Provoke photographers (...)."
