This is a conservation technique typically used to prevent pigments from falling off. This layer can be removed by a conservator. At some point the wax and tissue paper layer was removed from the top left area (over the faces) and presumably the rest of the piece would look like that if the remainder of the layer is removed properly.

Description: ATTRIBUTED TO SIR THOMAS LAWRENCE (English, 1769-1830) STUDY OF BENJAMIN WEST oil on canvas; inscribed on verso B. West President of the R.A by Sir Thom Lawrence; bears number 81e, stenciled on stretcher and stretcher incised with Brown 163 High Holborn; 21 x 16 inches; period frame: 26 x 21 inches Other Notes: One of Sir Thomas Lawrence's most famous portraits is of American artist Benjamin West. This work appears to be a study of the portrait which now hangs in the Yale Centre for British Art in New Haven. Christie's archivists have confirmed that the number inscribed 81e matches a painting that was consigned as a Sir T. Lawrence Portrait of Benj. West on March 31, 1891; however, the painting did not get entered into the auction and was thus returned to the owner. The stretcher also bears incised mark of Thomas Brown, who supplied Lawrence with artists materials between 1807 and 1823.

Condition Report: nice age to canvas, not lined; no tears or punctures; small repair visible on back of canvas (diameter: approx. 1 in) but not visible on front of canvas, even with blacklight; frame appears original to painting; paint surface has concentric circles of craquelure.

Ewer married Eliza Coffin Swain (1811-1879) of the prominent Coffin family of Nantucket. The artist to whom this portrait is attributed, James S. Hathaway, was Nantucket's most active portrait painter in the 1840's. In exchange for the Coffin's generous funding of Hathaway's studies in Italy, the artist painted the portraits of many members of the Coffin family. This portrait, along with the portrait of Ewer's son Albert (1842-1898), was likely painted as part of this exchange between Hathaway and the Coffin family. Description: ATTRIBUTED TO JEAN AUGUSTE DOMINIC INGRES (French, 1780-1867) TETE DE RACHEL, LE TRAGEDIENNE oil on canvas; titled Rachel, verso stretcher; bears Arthur Tooth & Sons, Ltd. label with title and attribution No. 3086, verso; 12 1/2 x 9 inches Provenance: Sir Leon Bagrit, by descent to current owner. Other Notes: Jean Auguste Dominic Ingres, the last of the major neoclassical painters, likely painted the famous Tragedienne actress, Elisabeth Rachel Felix, between her rise in popularity in 1841 and her death in 1858. Rachel has been described as the "Tragic Genius of the Paris Stage". Born in Aargau, Switzerland to bohemian peddlers in 1821, Rachel spent her childhood singing on the streets. By 1830, she had moved to Paris to pursue her dream to become an actress. It wasn't long before Rachel's talent for acting was recognized and she soon became famous throughout Europe for her roles in French classical tragedies. Rachel was perceived by critics to be have been instrumental to the rebirth of French theater. Many artists of her time, including Ingres, used her as the personification of the Muse of Tragedy. Ingres was commissioned in 1855 by Prince Jerome Napoleon to create works for an architectural project: a Temple of Melpomene. The temple was to be a gift for the actress and his lover, Rachel. Ingres famous Birth of the Muses, now at the Louvre in Paris, is one of the works created for the temple. Ingres is known to have painted Rachel on several occasions. Charlotte Bronte's character Vashti in the novel Villette was based on Rachel. Elisabeth Rachel Felix died of tuberculosis in 1858.
