1961 First Edition THE WINTER OF OUR DISCONTENT by John Steinbeck

Estimate: $300 - $500

Description: The Winter of Our Discontent is John Steinbeck's last novel, published in 1961. The title comes from the first two lines of William Shakespeare's Richard III: "Now is the winter of our discontent / Made glorious summer by this sun [or son] of York". Steinbeck makes use of an unusual structural device in Winter, switching between three different styles of narrative point of view (see Narration). The novel is presented in two halves, Part One and Part Two, and each half starts with two chapters written in third person narration. After these two chapters in each half, the point of view changes to first person, narrated by the protagonist, Ethan Hawley.[7] The four chapters in third person narrative are mostly presented from the point of view of Ethan, but not in first person, a technique known as Free Indirect Discourse, or Free indirect speech. There are two exceptions to this: the first is an interlude at the start of chapter twelve where the point of view switches to that of Margie: "when a more intimate view is needed of the seductress Margie Young-Hunt . . . the third person narrative reappears." [8] The second exception is the interlude at the start of chapter eleven which is presented by the author as an omniscient narrator, before the chapter reverts to Ethan's point of view. The three different narrative styles are therefore: omniscient narrator (Chapter 11 part); Free Indirect Discourse from multiple points of view (Chapters 1,2,11,12); and first person narrative from a single point of view (the rest of the book). We describe all items to the best of our ability as we are not experts on everything. Please ask specific questions on details or condition prior to bidding, ALL ITEMS ARE SOLD AS IS. We box and ship to keep costs low. We do not use a packaging service, unless the costumer prefers us to use them. We can ship either USPS or UPS

1917 WWI Emprunt de la Libération French Poster by Firmin Bouisset (1859-1925)

Estimate: $400 - $600

Description: Buy bonds at London County & Westminster Bank (Paris) Ltd. F.Bouisset 1859-1925 painter graphic designer book illustrator poster artist. known for posters for Maggi and Lefecer-Utile, LuLu. Print by Vaugirard, Paris. Back in 1917 and 1918, the French government issued "Emprunt de la Libération" (liberty loans) to raise money for its involvement in World War I (1914-18). The loans was particularly subscribed to citizens but also interest groups (such as banks and investors) with interest to financially support the Allied war effort. The loans worked similar to the American "liberty bonds" from which we also have many vintage posters. This is quite the unusual world war one poster as two different soldiers from two different countries are seen on the same poster. Flanked by two English soldiers (one ready to throw a hand grenade another firing his rifle) is a French soldier waving his hat as a sign of victory is the middle. Notice how the soldiers stand on the battlefield together with eksplosions around them pointing towards a common enemy. "On les a" written on poster can be translated into "We got them" which seems like a suitable battle cry for the Allies when they knew the war came to a victorious close.

Condition Report: Very Good Condition with some of the poster having an accordion look from the shrink-wrap. We took it off so it can lay back out. There are some minor tears from age and display.

1982 The Hammer Conspiracies by Frank A. Aloi FIRST EDITION Paperback

Estimate: $150 - $300

Description: First Edition Second Printing, 564 pp. Black wrappers, red titles. Details investigations of mafia activity in Rochester, New York, the subsequent trials, and the debacle that followed. It is a story of perjured detectives, gang wars, organized crime, overthrown convictions, imprisoned law enforcement officers and prosecutors, faulty police work, and corrupt officials. "Vincent 'Jimmy the Hammer' Massaro was hit by the mob. His death generated conspiracy prosecutions against what was alleged to be the top echelon of the organization in Rochester, New York. The testimony of informers, including two of the alleged triggermen, and detectives who surveilled mob meetings where Massaro's fate was plotted produced convictions. But there had been no surveillances. Detectives admitted perjuring themselves. Alleged mobsters were released from prison. A bloody gang war erupted, and Federal Indictments were returned against Detectives and Prosecutors. A saga of fabricated evidence and corruption unprecedented in the war against organized crime. We describe all items to the best of our ability as we are not experts on everything. Please ask specific questions on details or condition prior to bidding, ALL ITEMS ARE SOLD AS IS. Vintage 1965 Del Monte Round Up Cowboy Posters (2 Different Scene Connected Posters)

Estimate: $150 - $250

Printed by Del Monte in 1965, this complete series was used in supermarkets around the United States to advertise the canning company’s “Round-Up” Campaign. Starting in the 1940s and appearing biannually, Del Monte took advantage of the popular iconographies of cowboys and the West to encourage customers to ’round-up’ on canned peaches and veggies. This usually accompanied a sale on the goods; further encouragement for customers to buy in bulk. We describe all items to the best of our ability as we are not experts on everything.
