Oil Painting

Lot 10: Oil Painting "Moonlight Scene", by Adolf Stademann, around 1870

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Oil on canvas, mounted on panel Germany, around 1870 Adolf Stademann (1824-1895) - German landscape painter Paintings by Stademann fetch up to 23,000 Euros at international auctions Signed lower right, "A. Stademann" Framed Overall dimensions, framed: 46 x 72.5 cm Very good condition The painting at hand shows a dramatic nightly landscape, lit only by the moon, that definitely belongs to Adolf Stademann's best works. In the foreground, a few boats lie on the shore of a river or lake. A small plot of land, covered with small houses, reaches into the water from the right side. A few windows are lit and a fire is burning right next to the shore in front of the houses. On the opposite side, the water extends to the other shore with only a few trees and church steeples breaking out of the rather flat silhouette and reaching up into the nightly sky. The largest part of the painting is taken up by the torn nightly sky, in the middle of which the moon emits its pale light. The moon is partially covered by the tails of a large, dark cloud on the right side of the painting. Several other clouds pile up above, under and next to the moon. The light of the moon that is filtered, softened and partially covered by the clouds is finally mirrored in the soft waves of the water underneath. It is definitely the main theme of this painting and reveals the artist's exact observation of nature and his enormous skill as a painter. Additionally to this large source of light, the artist has added a few other smaller ones into the dark painting, such as the few lit windows and the burning fire on the right side. The painting is partially painted in an impasto style and in an impressionist manner which appears especially atmospheric in the torn sky. The painting is in very good condition, with little craquelure. The painting is recently framed and the frame is in very good condition with only few traces of wear. The overall dimensions of the painting, framed, measure 46 x 72.5 cm; the dimensions of the wooden panel and canvas measure 30 x 56.5 cm. The painting is signed lower right, "A. Stademann". On the back of the frame is a small dedication plaque. Adolf Stademann (1824-1895) Adolf Stademann was the son of Ferdinand von Stademann, a counselor and privy secretary to King Otto that also worked as a draughtsman and lithographer. Stademann junior started working as a forester before he turned towards painting and began to take lessons with Carl August Lebschée. He focused on landscape painting and the depiction of nightly and wintery scenes under the moonshine and developed a very unique impressionist style.

Oil Painting

Lot 11: Oil Painting "Portrait of a Lady", Germany, around 1870

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Oil on canvas Germany, around 1870 Fine portrait Framed Overall dimensions, framed: 73.5 x 85.5 cm Good condition This fine portrait in oil on canvas shows the profile of a lady in a green dress. Her brown hair is piled up to an exuberant coiffure that reminds a little of the well-known artistic hair styles of Empress Elisabeth of Austria. The classical profile of the woman is mitigated by her gentle eyes and the delicate Biedermeier jewellery and lace trimming of her dress. The portrait is not static; seemingly unconsciously, the woman plays with the long, filigree gold necklace around her neck. In this way the artist is able to incorporate soft movement into the portrait. Moreover, he creates a bright diagonal in the otherwise quite dark painting, which leads from the lower right corner over her hand and the golden brooch on her dress to her pale face, letting the viewer's gaze wander repeatedly from the woman's hand to her face and back. The bright areas are counterbalanced by the darker areas of the hair and background, which offset and emphasise the brightness. The oil painting is in good condition with craquelure and few paint flakes. It was relined and coated with a varnish. Crossings from one canvas to the other are partly visible on the edges. A small blemish in the coating is visible above the head of the woman. The beautiful stucco frame displays clearly visible signs of age and wear and loss of material as well as touch-ups in some areas. The overall dimensions, framed, are 73.5 x 85.5 cm. The dimensions of the stretcher frame are 68 x 56 cm.

Description: Oil on wood Holland, late 19th century Wood panel probably older (18th/19th century) Seascape with fisher boat and harbor town Beautiful gilt wood frame Overall dimensions, framed: 34 x 40,5 cm Good condition This seascape in oil on wood was probably made by a Dutch painter in the late 19υth century. Hansens fetch up to 27.000 Euro in international auctions Excellent and fine drawings Impressive and individual Part of the recently in Berlin discovered portfolio map Hansen'sThese two portraits of a young gentleman by Niels Christian Hansen show the gentleman from two different angles. Obviously, Hansen must have studied the bust from both sides and gives you the impression of a nearly all-around view of the bust. Hansen has managed to transform the material of the bust, the stone, into the drawing. The young man is traditionally dressed and his necklace with a horse shoe pendant makes him a bit different. The gentleman's individuality is delicately drawn and the drawing is a good evidence for Hansen's mastership. Both sheets are in overall good condition with some traces of wear and age, as well as tears (material loss) and creases. The darker portrait shows stains and is somewhat uneven. Niels Christian Hansen (1834-1922) N. C. Hansen studied at the Royal Danish Academy for Arts in 1851 and started working as a portrait painter in 1855/56. During this time, photography began to rise and Hansen, instead of fighting the new medium, adapted to it. He joined a partnership with a photographer and soon their company Hansen, Schou & Weller became the most famous photo studio in Copenhagen. They took pictures of all the important people of their time and many of their photographs can today be found in the most exclusive portrait collections worldwide.

Hansens fetch up to 27.000 Euro in international auctions Expert drawing Very detailed Part of the recently in Berlin discovered portfolio map Hansen'sNiels Christian Hansen, a portrait painter from Copenhagen, left his photo studio in Copenhagen in 1889 and presumably went on "Grand Tour" to visit continental Europe's museums. He made studies of all the important sculptures and busts and amongst them also the beautiful sculpture of mercury attaching his winged shoes. Originally created by Jean-Baptiste Pigalle (1714-1785) in 1748 to enter into the Académie Royale, the sculpture had been a huge success and immediately got copied many times over. Hansen's drawing fascinates through its extreme detail. The sheet shows wear and folds, creases as well as tears, yet the drawing itself is hardly affected. Niels Christian Hansen (1834-1922) N. C. Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Two pencil and charcoal drawings Niels Christian Hansen (1834-1922), Danish portrait painter and photographer Portrait (frontal): signed lower right ‚Niels Chr. Hansen' and dated in the border of the bust: 13.02.1895; Dimensions: 51,5 x 66cm Portrait (lateral): Dimensions: 46 x 65cm Paintings by Niels C. Hansens fetch up to 27.000 Euro in international auctions Expertly executed drawings Good condition Part of the recently in Berlin discovered portfolio map Hansen's These two large and masterful drawings portrait the famous bust of 'Paris' by Antonio Canova (1757-1822) that can nowadays be admired at the Art Institute of Chicago. Hansen has drawn the bust from two different angles and seeing both together can give you the impression of nearly getting an all-around view of the bust. Niels Christian Hansen, a Danish portrait painter, studied the sculptures and busts of all the great masters to improve his skills - with success as these two artworks give excellent proof of. They are done in charcoal and pencil and even the border is hand drawn. As the drawing of the frontal Paris is dated in the border of the bust it can be assumed that the other drawing has also been made around the 13th February 1895. Hansen has taken some strange liberties in the drawing of the lateral portrait: he has drawn a fingertip on the border of the Phrygian hat that has absolutely nothing to do there. The medium of the drawing and the grey of the pencil beautifully show the marble's structure and colouring. Both sheets are in good condition and show traces of age and storage, as well as creases.

Hansens fetch up to 27.000 Euro in international auctions Excellent drawings Good condition Part of the recently in Berlin discovered portfolio map Hansen's Niels Christian Hansen left his successful photo studio in Copenhagen in 1889 and presumably went on the Grand Tour to visit continental Europe's important museums. He made many drawings copying the most relevant sculptures and busts and trained his skills. As a trained portrait painter and photographer, Hansen had a much schooled eye for the right angles as well as the effect of light and shadow. This explains why he did not just copy the head of the dying Alexander as seen from the front but as seen from below. Hansen's Alexander's head ends precisely where the real bust shows a clearly visible line, suggesting that it might not have been put together when Hansen drew it. Both sheets are in good condition and show traces of age and storage with creases and tears in the margins. Niels Christian Hansen (1834-1922) N. C. Lot 35: Oil Painting "Portrait of Helmut Wirth", by Max Vollmberg, 1930

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Oil on canvas Germany, 1930 Max Vollmberg (1882-?), German painter Lower right side signed and dated, "Max Vollmberg 1930" Framed behind glass Overall dimensions: 80 x 90 cm Very good condition This delightful portrait of a child shows a small boy in a blue garment sitting in a green meadow. The boy, whose name according to the inscription on the reverse side is Helmut Wirth, sits sideways towards the viewer looking intently at something outside of the painting while a red and white ball and a small, white wooden horse lie around him. The background appears sketchy, the brushwork is visible and the artist obviously was not concerned with depicting an actual landscape. This is quite contrary to the child: the face is so smooth that brushstrokes can only be seen at close range. Every line, every nuance of colour is chosen and painted precisely; evidently, an accurate representation of the reality in this case was Vollmberg's ambition. The painting is in very good condition. The large gold frame is also in very good condition with minor traces of wear. The painting is protected by a glass panel. It is signed and dated, "Max Vollmberg. 1930", on the lower right side and inscribed, "Helmut Wirth, geb. 19.08.1926 in Berlin. Gemalt von Max Volmberg. Berlin 1930", on the reverse. Lot 37: Bronze "Female Torse", attributed to Arno Breker, around 1930

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Bronze, brown patinated, on a wooden socket Germany, around 1930 Attributed to Arno Breker (1900-1991) - German sculptor and architect Inscribed on the plinth with the foundry mark „W. Geisler, Berlin" Dimensions: 25 cm high; plinth: 9 x 7.5 cm Very good condition This bronze torso fascinates through its anatomical exactness that contrasts with the seemingly untreated surface of the bronze. Because even though the bronze has been covered in a brown patina and has a very fine shine, it is at the same time quite roughly moulded which creates the impression of the bronze's surface being ‚untreated'. A similar contrast arises between the softness of the female body being represented by the hard material bronze. The artist manages all these differences in an incomparably genius manner. The attribution to Arno Breker was made as he created very similar bronze torsi in that period, such as the "Torso der Siegerin" in 1935. As our bronze bears no artist signature, we cannot confirm it to be by Arno Breker with certainty. The bronze is in very good condition. It shows the foundry mark „W. Geisler, Berlin" on the plinth. It is 25 cm high and the plinth's dimensions are: 9 x 7.5 cm. The dimensions of the wooden socket are: 14 cm broad; 14 cm deep; 4 cm high. Arno Breker (1900-1991) Born to a master stonemason in the town of Elberfeld in 1900, Arno Breker already learned his eventual craft early on in the parental enterprise. He first visited the arts school in Elberfelde and from 1920 he studied at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. Four years later, he travelled to Paris in order to study the sculptural works of early modernism. There, he met the art dealer Alfred Flechtheim who offered to sell his works in Paris, thus making Breker known in the art scene of Paris, where the artist eventually settled in 1927. He returned to Germany in 1934 after a year of studying in Italy. In Berlin, the repatriate taught at the Akademie der Künste as professor of sculpture. He has remained a controversial figure due to his work for the Nazis during the Third Reich. Numerous exhibits, documentaries as well as scientific publications have been dedicated to the sculptor and architect.

The background is in a soft olive green that gives the lithography its name. Manessier is best known for his church windows and this image is definitely influenced by the structures of glass painting. His favorite colors, red and blue, also dominate in this work, as the fields between the dark blue lines are filled with red, pink and light blue colors. The lithography is typical for Manessier's abstract oeuvre that has been strongly influenced by glass paintings. It is, due to its tender yet powerful colouring, a very beautiful and harmonic work. The lithography is numbered 51/90 and is in excellent condition and beautifully framed. Alfred Manessier (1911-1993) Alfred Manessier has enjoyed a classical education at both the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Amiens and Paris before moving to Paris to work as a free artist. After a short termed residence in a cloister, Manessier turned towards religious art, especially the creation of church glass windows. The influences of glass paintings can be easily recognized in the works on paper and canvas. Manessier is one of France's most important abstract painters and has participated in the Documenta 1, 2 and 3.

Lot 48: Three Drawings and one Lithography by Setsuko Ikai, 1970/72

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Crayon and pencil; colour lithography Germany, 1970 and 1972 Setsuko Ikai (born 1941), Japanese-German Artist All signed, dated and titled All framed Dimensions: between 95 x 82cm and 57 x 94cm Good condition The connections between the Japanese and the German culture are always notable in Setsuko Ikai's artworks. Her drawings in vertical format all show two Asian persons - sometimes only their faces - below graphic elements. The titles „Monshō I, II and III" allow a closer interpretation of the works: A Monshō (紋章) is a Japanese emblem that identifies a family or an individual, similar to the European heraldic emblems. In the drawings, these Monshō can be found above the heads of the persons. They dominate them and it seems that they are partly trying to free themselves from them. The lithography shows a head in profile and is titled and numbered „Lied unter der Erde III" (="Song underneath the earth III)". All four works are in good condition but the frames show visible traces of age and chipping. The three drawings are set in linen passé-partouts. The dimensions including the frames vary between 95 x 82cm and 57 x 94cm. Setsuko Ikai (born 1941) Ikai was born in 1941 in Tokyo where she began her studies and the Masashino Art Academy. She continued her studies in Lisbon and Essen, Germany, and finished at the Art Academy in Düsseldorf, Germany, where she lives today. The artist lives in two worlds, the one of her mother land Japan and the one of her new chosen home, Germany. She uses Japan paper for her works that often show eastern motives but never seem completely foreign to a western beholder. The fine works reveal the artist's discipline and often take up historical references of the Japanese ink drawings.

He started painting himself in 1938 and immediately participated in the great Surrealism Exhibition in Paris. To avoid the war, Matta moved to New York, where he was very quickly accepted as an artist. He returned to Europe in 1948 and moved to Rome.
