The drawing bears a very close resemblance to the eight drawings by Fontana held in the British Museum, which themselves relate to Giulio Bonasone's engravings for Achille Bocchi's Symbolicarum Quaestionum [...] Libri Quinque (Bologna 1555). The current drawing plausibly comes from the same series of the 84 drawings that were broken up in Sotheby's Ellesmere Collection sale, 1972.
