Second Anglo-Afghan War: The Second Anglo-Afghan War

Estimate: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Photographer: John Burke (1843 - 1900) and William Baker. Images of the Second Anglo-Afghan War. 1878 - 1880. 6 albumen prints. Each circa 20,5 x 28 cm and 17,5 x 46 cm (1 consisting of 2 prints hinged together as a panorama). Mounted to both sides of album pages (foxing, traces of use, tears), annotated in English in black ink below the images on the mounts.Together with William Baker, the Irishman John Burke documented the Second Anglo-Afghan War between 1878 - 1880. The team worked under tough conditions, carrying fragile wet-plates and mixing chemicals in high altitudes and extreme temperatures. The images here have a certain solitude, common to early war photography such as photographs by Roger Fenton of the Crimean War, which, due to long exposure times and difficult transport of photographic equipment, were usually taken after the fighting was over. The views include the eastern end of the Sherpur Cantonment, showing General Roberts Headquarters, general views of Kabul (including a panorama) and the lower and upper Bala-Hissar Citadel, Kabul. These are rare documents of a country still in turmoil today. – Slight fading in some edges, most with good contrasts and a strong violet-brown tone.Provenance: Günter Heil CollectionLit.: Pat Hodgson. Koch was an enthusiastic photographer and used his hobby in documenting the people he was studying. In 1906, he published photogravures of people he encountered on the expedition in his monumental "Indianertypen aus dem Amazonasgebiet nach eigenen Aufnahmen während seiner Reise in Brasilien" (1906). Reisen in Nord West Brasilien, 1903-1905" ("Two Years Among the Indians. Travels in North-West Brazil"). His descriptions of Brazilian tribes, illustrated with photographs are still used by anthropologists and ethnologists today. The images offered in this lot mostly show Koch in South America preparing for his trip along the Amazon and at various stops along the trip often together with Indians who helped and accompanied him. Inserted in window-mat album boards, bound in brown canvas album with embossed ornamentation and silver-stamped title Südpolar-Expedition on front cover. The Gauss Expedition (1901–1903), was the first German expedition to Antarctica, led by Arctic veteran and geology professor Erich von Drygalski on the ship Gauss, which was named after the mathematician and physicist Carl Friedrich Gauss. Drygalski led this first German South Polar expedition to explore the unknown area of Antarctica lying south of the Kerguelen Islands. The expedition started from Kiel on August 11, in the summer of 1901. Despite being trapped by ice for nearly 14 months until February 1903, the expedition discovered new territory in Antarctica. Some images show the Kerguelen Islands where one party was stationed, the majority show scenes on the sea and the dangerous situation when the ship was trapped in ice. The newly discovered terrain was named Kaiser Wilhelm Land. – Most prints buckled, some with minimal oxidation mirroring, otherwise in very good ondition.Lit.: Erich von Drygalski.
