Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Levant - Signed l.l. - Oil on canvas, 46 x 61 cm - Provenance: - Auction Sotheby Mak van Waay, Amsterdam, 17 November 1980, lot 115 - Collection prof. dr. W.H. Brummelkamp en mevrouw H.E. Brummelkamp-van Joost, Amstelveen - N.B. I: The Levant is the historical-geographical term for a portion of Western-Asia. It covers the region directly to the east of the Mediterranean Sea. The region is bordered by the Taurus Mountains in the north, and the Syrian Desert and the Northern Arabian Desert in the east. The Sinai is sometimes included in the Levant, but is usually seen as the region to its south. Presently the region covers a part, or the whole of Israel, Jordan, Libanon, the Palestinian Areas, Iraq and Syria. The word Levant derives from the Latin word 'levare' or from the French 'lever', both meaning 'to rise'. It is a term for 'the land where the sun rises', also known under the Arabian term Majrek. The opposite term is the Maghreb or 'the land of the setting sun', usually including the lands in western North-Africa. The Levant has always been a transit point for traveling nomads and caravans with their traveling merchants due to its central position between the three continents. These routes connected to the very ancient silkroads. The sea also formed a major trading route from the Levant to the state of Elam, and from there on to the rich Indus valley. N.B. II: We are grateful to Mr. Fred Meijer of the RKD in The Hague for his assistance in cataloging this lot.

Jan Miense Molenaer (Haarlem 1609-1610 - 1668)

Lot 17: Jan Miense Molenaer (Haarlem 1609-1610 - 1668)

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: The stone cutter - Oil on panel, 44.7 x 34.4 cm - Provenance: - Art Gallery P. de Boer, Amsterdam, 1945 - Private collection, The Netherlands - N.B. I: Jan Miense Molenaer was born at the start of the Dutch Golden Age in Haarlem and is often named together with the most renowned Haarlem painters of his time, such as Adriaan van Ostade and Jan de Bray. This pupil of Frans Hals married his own pupil in 1636, the well-known paintress Judith Leyster. The marriage resulted in five children, of whom the son, Jan Molenaer II, followed in the footsteps of his parents by becoming a painter himself. Circa 1637 the family moved fom Haarlem to Amsterdam, where according to tradition the painter Jan Lievens was a lodger with the family. Miense Molenaer was subsequently commissioned to paint an extraordinarily large painting for the Van Loon family, depicting the famous regents Geelvinck, Alewijn and 35 other Amsterdam governors. Miense Molenaer died nine years after his wife, aged around 58, in Haarlem. His oeuvre contains portraits, some religious works, but mainly genre pieces, such as the painting offered here. Represented here is a serious looking, but quite frivolous scene: a 'stone cutter' (the bearded figure) treating an insane man. When a person was suffering from mental illness, they were thought to have a stone in their head, in this painting being removed by a quack. Such scenes, in which the figures wear theatrical costumes, were very amusing to the general public, but for learned doctors a true conservation piece. N.B. II: We are grateful to Mr. Fred Meijer of the RKD in The Hague for his assistance in cataloging this lot.

The restoration took more than twenty years, in which the church steeple was given a completely new appearance. During the restoration several Walt Disney figures were also included amongst the religious imagery. An Arnhem vicar who objected to the imagery was, as a result, also depicted by the sculptor. Despite the altered exterior the church still functions, and both the church and the square are still very busy, especially during the market on Friday and Saturday.

Description: Dutch landscape with windmills - Signed, dated 1856 and annotated 'à mon ami E. Lambrichs' l.l. - Oil on canvas, 34.3 x 42.7 cm - Provenance: - Gebr. Douwes Fine Art, Amsterdam - Auction Christie's Amsterdam, 17 October 2007, lot 120 - Private collection, The Netherlands - N.B. I: This work was a gift to Edmond Lambrichs (1830 - 1887), a Belgian artist and member of the Société Libre des Beaux Arts. This artist's society was founded on the first of March 1868 in Brussels at the residence of the artist Camille Van Camp. These progressive Brussels artists regularly organised group exhibitions to promote a freer, more realistic approach to art, opposing the outdated academic style favoured by the older generation and some of their own generation. The group exhibition of the year 1872 attracted no less than 68 participating artists, even including some painters from the previous generations, such as Jean-Baptiste Madou, Jean-François Portaels, the artist twins David and Pieter Oyens and also Willem Roelofs. Roelofs had visited Brussels regularly since 1847, as a result of which he and Lambrichs had been friends for quite some time. - N.B. II: We are grateful to drs. Richard W.A. Bionda for his assistance in cataloging this lot.
