The present watercolours come from his Ploughing in the Campagna di Roma, Sketches Illustrative of the Manners and Costumes of France, Switzerland and Italy (pub. London, 1821). Richard Hicks Bridgens was a sculptor, designer and architect. He attempted to set up an architectural practice in Birmingham in 1819 which he closed in 1825 when he moved to Trinidad where his wife had inherited a sugar plantation. In 1836 he printed West India Scenery, with illustrations of the process of making sugar, etc. from sketches taken during a voyage to, and residence of seven years in, the Island of Trinidad. Bridgens' work is an early record of life in Trinidad. Bridgens became the Superintendent of Public Works in Port of Spain and was responsible for the design of the first Government Offices on the site now occupied by the Red House. He died in Trinidad in 1846.

Description: Richard Westall, RA (British, 1766-1836) The Lady in the Lake - A Man with a Falcon and a Dog; A Youth Reclining; and Children talking to an Old Lady inscribed in the artist's hand to the reverse watercolour, 12 x 8cm (5 x 3in) , 12 x 8cm (5 x 3in) and 9 x 7cm (4 x 3in) (3) The present watercolours are illustrations by Westall for Sir Walter Scott's poem "The Lady in the Lake". This poem was first published in 1810 to great critical and public acclaim and had an immense impact on 19th Century culture. Set in the Trossachs region, with much of the action on and around Loch Katrine, Scott's poeticised rendering of romantic love, clan war, feuding and rivalry went through six editions and sold 25,000 copies in less than a year, setting new heights for the popularity of poetry. New editions followed steadily throughout the century and the poem is credited with having inspired the Highland revival, and what grew into the Victorian love affair with a mythical vision of Scotland. These watercolours, signed and inscribed by Westall - who provided drawings for the first illustrated edition of 1810 - appear to be proposals that were not finally selected for publication.

Condition Report: Some browning and loss of colour.

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: § Leon de Smet (Belgian, 1881-1966) Portrait of Madame Blanche Lillian Sauter (1864-1924) inscribed upper left "Tres respectuesement au cher maitre G Sauter, Leon de Smet 6.7.16" red and brown crayon with charcoal h:52 w: 37 cm The Belgian artist Leon de Smet worked mainly as a portraitist and painter of still-lives. The sitter of this moving portrait is Blanche Lillian Sauter (1864-1924), sister of the renowned author John Galsworthy (awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 1922 and most famous for 'The Forsythe Saga') who was a close friend of the artist. Lillian was married to the Bavarian born artist Georg Sauter (1866-1937), a friend of de Smet who had emigrated to England in 1889. After the outbreak of the First World War, Sauter, having never become a fully naturalized British citizen, was - in spite of protests and petitions from his circle of friends - interned in December 1915 along with his son Rudolph. Galsworthy petitioned the Government for Sauter's release, wrote many letters, and personally called on cabinet ministers to no avail. This portrait, drawn in July 1916, catches the immense sadness of Lillian after the internment of her husband and son. She is depicted in a sombre mourning dress, her wedding ring as a poignant reminder of her commitment to her absent husband with her gaze vacant, directed inward more than out. Whether Sauter, to whom this portrait is dedicated, ever saw this portrait is uncertain. He was repatriated to Germany in early 1917 and was left with such a hatred for England that he refused to return to his wife in London. Lilian's heart was broken and she died in 1924. Late Impressionist and Symbolist influences are clearly visible in this haunting portrait, which sums up Lillian's grief and reflects upon the immensely difficult situation she endured with solemn dignity. Furthermore, it is a striking document of Anglo-German relations during WWI. The artist, who lived and worked in England between 1914 and 1918, is much acclaimed and his works achieve high prices on the art market. In his native Belgium a small museum is dedicated solely to his works. Belgian art of this period, long neglected, is now a very fashionable and popular field in the art market these days, especially the contemporary of Le Smet, Ensor. The present portrait is very typical of Belgian late Symbolist portraiture. Leon de Smet is an outstandingly good painter. His portraits of women are his best works, besides his beautiful still lifes.
