Estimate: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: oil on panel

Condition Report: The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes of Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc. 502 East 74th St. New York, NY 212-734-3920, simonparkes@msn.com, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. This work is in very good condition. It has not been recently restored. There is no apparent abrasion or instability. The panel is made from a single piece of oak and is flat. There are no reinforcements on the reverse. There are a few very isolated losses in the faces, hands and breast. The dirt layer is quite visibly opaque in the darker colors, and this is a picture which certainly will respond well to cleaning."This lot is offered for sale subject to Sotheby's Conditions of Business, which are available on request and printed in Sotheby's sale catalogues. The independent reports contained in this document are provided for prospective bidders' information only and without warranty by Sotheby's or the Seller."

PIETER CLAEISSENS THE ELDER | Recto:The Visitation;
Verso: A Bishop Saint

Estimate: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: oil on panel

Condition Report: The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes of Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc. 502 East 74th St. New York, NY 212-734-3920, simonparkes@msn.com, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. This double sided work on panel has recently been stabilized on both sides. Both sides have shown instability to the paint layer in the past, and the surfaces are a little uneven as a result. The panel is flat. There are no visible unrestored losses. The composition with the figure in white shows no restorations at all in his face. There are some slightly broad retouches in his robes and in the fabric he is holding. There are also spots of retouching in the dark background. On the other side, a few retouches have been added in the darker colors of the clothing of the two figures, in the cheek of the older woman on the right, and in the younger woman on the left. If the work is cleaned, it is possible that older restorations may become apparent. The work would improve if it were cleaned and the unevenness to the surfaces resolved, but it can also be hung as is."This lot is offered for sale subject to Sotheby's Conditions of Business, which are available on request and printed in Sotheby's sale catalogues. The independent reports contained in this document are provided for prospective bidders' information only and without warranty by Sotheby's or the Seller."

CIRCLE OF ROGIER VAN DER WEYDEN | The Annunciation

Estimate: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: oil on panel

Condition Report: This painting presents itself beautifully, and it has been recently restored. There is approximately a ½ inch addition along the left edge of the painting, added to give the composition more space. In the past, the main issue seems to have been a flaking surface, but presently the surface is very stable, and there is no evidence of any ongoing lifting or movement in the paint layer. The scattered losses (of various sizes) from this past flaking have been expertly restored, and are scattered throughout the composition. Under UV, these restorations are visible. These include the reconstruction of the Virgin's hand holding the book (her upraised hand is well-preserved) as well as in parts of the mantles of the Virgin and the angel, some parts of the red fabric of the bed, in the windowsill and background, and spots in the figures' faces. This having been said, the painting does not appear to have suffered from any general abrasion, and there are large parts of the composition which remain intact and with wonderful detail—subtle details such as the green fringe on the bed's canopy, and the delicate design on the carpet on which the Virgin kneels are almost entirely intact. The work can be hung as is. Offered in a carved wood frame."In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report. WILLEM KEY | Portrait of a bearded gentleman, half length, in a black doublet, holding the Book of Psalms;
Portrait of a lady, half length in a black gown, holding the Book of Psalms

Estimate: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: a pair, both oil on panel

Condition Report: Both panels are made up of two vertical boards, which are flat and unbeveled and have been thinned slightly and cradled on the reverse. Their paint surfaces appear to be stable beneath a rather thick, old varnish. Portrait of a Lady: There is a minor vertical crack with a few losses along it running from the lower edge at the left side toward the sleeve and another, with fewer paint losses, running form the upper edge, both visible in the catalogue image. There is a loss of approximately 1 by 1/4 in. to the left edge. Inspection under UV is impeded somewhat by the varnish though there are minor retouched losses scattered here and there, notably in the face and the sitter's left sleeve and concentrated at the edges of the panel. Portrait of a gentleman: There is a vertical split running the length of the panel at the center. A reading under UV is again impeded by the milky varnish though occasional retouches are detectable in the beard and attending to the lower part of the crack. Both panels would benefit from a light clean and revarnish. Offered unframed. In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. JOACHIM GEORG KREUTZFELDER | Allegorical portrait of the brothers Phillip Albert and Wilhelm Heinrich von Limpurg

Estimate: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: oil on copper

Condition Report: The copper plate is flat and stable. The paint surface is under a dirty and dull old varnish. The extreme corners of the copper plate have been pierced with holes (perhaps where it was affixed to a backing at some point?) and there is some paint loss in these areas. Other small losses in sky at center and in foliage of tree at upper left (these are visible in catalogue photo). Overall the paint surface is very well retained and there is very good preservation of detail, especially in the figures. There is some gold paint at extreme lower right and upper right edges, probably from rubbing of a frame. Under UV light: there are some small retouches at upper and lower edges, and some to whites of some of the banderoles. This painting would benefit from a light cleaning and addressing of the old losses. In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. FOLLOWER OF ROGIER VAN DER WEYDEN | Virgin and Child

This panel is cradled and flat. The paint layer is stable. There may be two original joins, one on the right side of the face and one on the left side of the face. The painting seems to be dirty, but in very good condition. Retouches are not visible under ultraviolet light, but there are losses in the red gown in the lower right and beneath the figure of Christ. There is a dark scuff in the baby's left thigh which is unretouched. There may be careful retouches added to define the fingers and some of the details. However, there appears to be very little retouching in the gardens in the background, in the angels in the sky or in the sky itself. If the work is cleaned, the palette would brighten noticeably, but retouches would become apparent. If the dark blemish in the leg of Christ is restored, the work could also be hung in its current state."This lot is offered for sale subject to Sotheby's Conditions of Business, which are available on request and printed in Sotheby's sale catalogues. The independent reports contained in this document are provided for prospective bidders' information only and without warranty by Sotheby's or the Seller."

GIANNICOLA DI PAOLO | The Madonna and Child in a landscape

Description: oil on panel, unframed

Condition Report: The following condition report has been provided by Karen Thomas of Thomas Art Conservation LLC., 336 West 37th Street, Suite 830, New York, NY 10018, 212-564-4024, info@thomasartconservation.com, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. This picture presents a pleasing appearance even with its current dirty and mottled surface that distracts the eye from the strengths of the picture. Darkened restoration paint throughout the picture is most noticeable as spots in the light flesh tones and the blue sky and as brownish material along the join down the center of the panel. Wear in the glazes used for modeling the flesh, particularly in the child's body, has been addressed with retouching that is less obvious, even under ultraviolet illumination. Along the top and bottom edges, passages of retouching suggest the presence of moderately sized losses. Drying cracks, a common aging phenomenon, have developed in the red lake glazes of Mary's dress, leading to some toning in the shadows. The wood panel support is comprised of two vertically grained boards and has been thinned, with a cradle attached to the reverse. A compound warp has developed, the join has begun to open and a few areas of detachment of the paint are found along the top edge. Cracks in the panel are found to the right of the child's head, to the left of the Madonna's chin, and through the right side of Mary's face. Structural intervention is recommended to address the cracks in the panel and to prevent further issues from developing. The lifting paint is vulnerable to loss and should be set back into place by a conservator. Cleaning to remove the distracting discolored retouching and brown accretions would improve the tonality overall. With proper retouching the appearance of this painting would markedly improve."This lot is offered for sale subject to Sotheby's Conditions of Business, which are available on request and printed in Sotheby's sale catalogues. The independent reports contained in this document are provided for prospective bidders' information only and without warranty by Sotheby's or the Seller."

ALESSO DI BENOZZO GOZZOLI, FORMERLY KNOWN AS THE MAESTRO ESIGUO | The Crucifixion, with the Madonna and Saints John the Evangelist and Mary Magdalene, a city and mountainous landscape beyond

Estimate: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: oil on panel

Condition Report: The following condition report has been provided by Karen Thomas of Thomas Art Conservation LLC., 336 West 37th Street, Suite 830, New York, NY 10018, 212-564-4024, info@thomasartconservation.com, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. Many details included in this picture — the highlights in the foliage and in the Magdalene's hair, the dripping blood at the foot of the cross, the town in the distance — appear to be nicely preserved. Retouching is visible in Christ's torso, the figures' faces, and the upper sky. There appears to be some strengthening in the folds of Christ's loincloth. It seems probable that an alteration has occurred in the pigment used in Mary's mantle as it was not likely to originally have appeared brown. Dirt is embedded in the fine network of aging cracks and a discolored varnish coats the surface. Scattered mild, localized tenting follows the woodgrain. The vertically grained wood support has been thinned, based on the exposed network of woodworm tunnels, and displays a mild lateral warp. Two crossbars dovetailed into the back of the panel are not original."This lot is offered for sale subject to Sotheby's Conditions of Business, which are available on request and printed in Sotheby's sale catalogues. CIRCLE OF GIOVANNI BELLINI | The Madonna and Child with the Infant Saint John the Baptist and Saint Catherine of Alexandria behind a ledge, a window onto a landscape in the background

Estimate: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: oil on panel

Condition Report: This painting is executed on a panel which is comprised of two pieces of wood brought together by a single horizontal join located at the bottom third of the composition. The panel itself is flat, stable, and cradled on the reverse with no beveling. This picture has a dirty varnish which is confirmed by UV examination. UV light also reveals a few scattered retouches, namely along the Madonna's cheek, jaw, and also along the panel join. The painting appears to have undergone two minor restoration campaigns as there is retouching both beneath the varnish (along the join) and also above the varnish (minor touches along the edge of the composition). Otherwise the painting is in very fresh condition and could respond to a light cleaning. There do not appear be any major holes or damages. Furthermore the landscape and the overwhelming majority of the figures are in very good condition. In a carved giltwood frame. In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. ATTRIBUTED TO BOCCACCIO BOCCACCINO | The Madonna and Child

Estimate: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: oil on panel, unframed

Condition Report: The following condition report has been provided by Karen Thomas of Thomas Art Conservation LLC., 336 West 37th Street, Suite 830, New York, NY 10018, 212-564-4024, info@thomasartconservation.com, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. The delicately modeled face of the Madonna is the highlight of this painting, and one of the best preserved and arresting portions. Discolored retouching addresses wide cracks in the upper left of her face and head coverings, interrupting the smooth modeling. Restoration is found throughout the child and in the Madonna's hands. It seems toning has been applied to shadows in Mary's dress and may exist in the red mantle while the edge of the Madonna's white collar is reconstruction. A thick, aged varnish coats the surface, reducing the illusion of depth and making reading the state of the background difficult. The vertically grained wood panel support, which displays a mild lateral warp, must have been trimmed at the top given the partial crossbar embedded along the top edge. The bottom crossbar is retained, with approximately an inch and a half of wood below it, an indication of how much may have been trimmed from the top. Narrow wood strips have been added to the perimeter of the panel, presumably to aid with framing."This lot is offered for sale subject to Sotheby's Conditions of Business, which are available on request and printed in Sotheby's sale catalogues. STUDIO OF ALESSANDRO ALLORI | Portrait of Virginia de' Medici (1568-1615), half length, in an elaborately embroidered gown, gold trimmed partlet and jeweled collare

The painting is restored and should be hung in its current state. The very smooth surface is only interrupted by a horizontal crack or original panel join running through the hair of the figure. The reverse of the panel shows one vertical batten in the center. Although the wood of the panel shows old woodworm and cracks, it does now seem to be repaired and stable. The clothing of the figure, her face and hair are in beautiful condition. Her hand shows a few dots of retouching, as does her neck. There are also about a dozen dots of retouching in the upper right and upper left background."This lot is offered for sale subject to Sotheby's Conditions of Business, which are available on request and printed in Sotheby's sale catalogues. FERRARESE SCHOOL, 15TH CENTURY | The Madonna and Child

Estimate: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: tempera and gold on panel, unframed

Condition Report: The following condition report has been provided by Karen Thomas of Thomas Art Conservation LLC., 336 West 37th Street, Suite 830, New York, NY 10018, 212-564-4024, info@thomasartconservation.com, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. Of particular note in this picture are the varied use of gold leaf embellishments — the dotted pattern decorating the interior of Mary's blue mantle, the punchwork in the halos and Mary's neckline, the curtains with an applied pattern of colored glazes — and the incised lines to indicate folds in the fabric of Mary's garments. The majority of the retouching found throughout the painting, much of which has discolored and darkened, appears to be focused on the flesh passages to address wear in the modeling. Gilding shows normal wear. Scattered normal, age-related cracks are most noticeable in the child's lower half and the sky. Two newer cracks following the wood grain originate from the bottom edge. The vertically-grained wood support has been thinned and displays a lateral warp. Given the degree of wear, cleaning may not be beneficial, however corrective retouching to adjust the discolored restoration, particularly in the light passages, and to minimize the appearance of dark cracks could improve the appearance."This lot is offered for sale subject to Sotheby's Conditions of Business, which are available on request and printed in Sotheby's sale catalogues.

Several campaigns of retouching, some discolored, are found throughout the painting. Cracks throughout the paint reveal dark underpaint below. It is likely the background was originally covered in gold leaf, but is now toned a dark brown. Two losses of gesso near the top reveal the wood support below. A thick, somewhat cloudy varnish coats the surface. The vertically grained wood panel support has two modern crossbars and an Italian-style structural intervention on the reverse: channels have been cut into the wood and intermittently filled with small pieces of new wood."This lot is offered for sale subject to Sotheby's Conditions of Business, which are available on request and printed in Sotheby's sale catalogues. Description: oil on canvas, unframed

Condition Report: The canvas is relined. Overall this painting presents well to the naked eye and there do not appear to be any major holes or damages. UV light reveals scattered retouches mostly isolated to a few areas including the sitters neck, very small retouches in her chest, along her left forearm and hand, and in her right breast. The painting is covered in a slightly milky old varnish which could be freshened up.In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above.

This work has been restored, but there is some instability to a crack in the panel in the lower right and some other small losses in the figure's chest. The panel has been cradled. It is now flat, and the paint layer otherwise seems to be stable. There have been numerous restored cracks to the wood, one running through the face, another through the left side of the face, and others on the right side of the picture. Under ultraviolet light, one can see retouches in the darkest colors of the clothing and background, as one would expect, and retouches to other small losses in the face. The paint layer seems to be generally strong and healthy. It seems that only the original layer of gesso remains in the oblong frame in the composition, and there are a few restorations in this oval. If the few small losses were addressed, the work could be hung in its current state. Restoration, most of it discolored, is found throughout the painting, most clearly visible as brownish touches in the flesh tones and dark spots in the sky. A lighter blue tone peeking through cracks around Mary's knee suggests the entire garment, aside from the portions with gilt accents, has been toned with restoration paint. The gilding in the cloth of honor behind the figures is sufficiently preserved to allow light to play off the multi-directional hatching although some wear is evident. The thick, glossy varnish remains clear and saturates the picture. The vertically grained wood support is comprised of two boards with the join left of center and displays a moderate lateral convex warp."This lot is offered for sale subject to Sotheby's Conditions of Business, which are available on request and printed in Sotheby's sale catalogues. Description: oil on panel

Condition Report: The painting is executed on three pieces of wood which are brought together by two vertical joins. The reverse of the panel is cradled, flat, stable, and beveled. Overall this picture presents well to the naked eye. It appears to have been cleaned in the past few years and could probably be hung in its current state. UV light reveals small scattered but cosmetic retouches in the sitters forehead, cheeks, lips and jaw line as well as in her ruff collar. Small retouches, as expected, are found along the two vertical joins though these are extremely minimal other small retouches are found in the sitters forearm and along the book at lower left. Painting is in a black ebonized frame with gold liner. In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above.
