Description: (Italy, 17th century)The Medici Lion, after the antique and Flaminio Vacca (1538-1605), unsigned, gilt bronze, 7-1/4 x 11-1/2 x 4-1/4 in., wear to gilt surface, various dents and abrasions, hole in area of mane with some corrosion. Notes: A similar lion in the collection of Michael Hall, Esq., and exhibited in New York, March 6 to April 4, 1988, with catalog by Charles Avery, pp. 126, entry 44, describes the construction method identical to this lion stating, "The tail appears to have been attached at the root at the lower back between the hind quarters. The rest of the body is cast in one. A large rectangular plug can be seen at the left flank stomach?". It also describes a more "brassy" element to the bronze which resembles that of alloys coming from the Giambologna studio. Construction and materials suggesting it as "possibly by Gianfrancesco Susini".
