Ferrari writes a series of letters to his correspondent, largely regarding a publishing project in which they were jointly involved, in part, ´...the arguments that you are propose take my memory back to an exciting era of motor car sports which I remember with so much pleasure. I am sending you a copy of my memoirs where you will find more material for the project which is so close to your heart...´ (24th November 1982) ´...I take into account the two details you mention. Regarding the third, the one of the introduction of two chicanes in the Pescara circuit, I know what happened because I have discussed it previously, I value the motivations and share the purposes.´ (7th March 1984), ´I am gathering material such as posters and signs of grand prix and motor car races or similar. There is nothing among your papers that could have been reproduced in colour....could you advice me who to contact in order to obtain any such posters, and in particular the one of the Acerbo Cup 1933....´ (10th April 1984), ´The project is still at an embryonic stage, and during this period it requires discretion, because we don´t want that any adventurer from the editorial sector burns this idea. But if the project, as I think, will go to completion, your material is beautiful, very appropriate...´(27th April 1984) ´I have this morning met Mr. Moretti, the architect, again regarding the argument of your project. Moretti has shown high interest and asks me to suggest to you a meeting which would be very inetresting for the future. You can write to him to the company ´Edizioni di Autocritica´, Rome....´. (30th October 1984) ´I have received your letter dated 16th December with the first chapter of your project dedicated to the Acerbo Cup....In my opinion the historical research is detailed and the reconstruction of the ambience accurate... It is a pleasure for me to rediscover figures and faces, names which take me back.....But have you realized that since then three generations have passed?..´ (21st December 1984). Five of the letters are accompanied by their original envelopes. VG, 7 Francesco Santuccione was the co-author, with Enzo Ferrari, of the book Piloti, Che Gente, published by Conti Editore in 1985, shortly after the final letter in the present correspondence. The Acerbo Cup (Grand Prix of Pescara) was a famous automobile race held in Pescara from 1924 to 1961 in which Ferrari raced many cars.

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: WELLES ORSON: (1915-1985) American Actor & Film Director, Academy Award winner. An excellent T.L.S., Orson, with holograph salutation and subscription, one page, 4to, Paris, 20th July 1950, to Leonard Lyons ('Dearest Lennie'). Welles states that his correspondent's letter had got mislaid in his dressing room 'amidst a lot of unproduced movie scripts and unpaid bills' and continues his social letter with an amusing anecdote provided by George Kaufman, 'He had just been in England where he visited Larry and Vivian. (sic) The subject of SISTER CARRIE came up, and George announced that the only living actor for the role of Hurstwood was in his opinion Orson Welles. The response to this suggestion, he told me, was more than ordinarily chilly; but instead of giving up, he pressed on and delivered an extensive lecture on the point that no other performer besides Welles could really touch the part at all. It was only later in the evening that he discovered his host was leaving for Hollywood to play Hurstwood! George says getting out of that one was the toughest job he has ever taken on.' In concluding Welles states that he will be leaving shortly for Germany ('where I am trying out a third play') and then going on to London. A good letter with fine associations. Some very light creasing, otherwise VG Leonard Lyons (1906-1976) American Newspaper Columnist. George S. Kaufman (1889-1961) American Playwright, Theatre Director and Producer. Laurence Olivier (1907-1989) English Actor and Vivien Leigh (1913-1967) English Actress, both Academy Award winners. Olivier starred in the role of Hurstwood, opposite Jennifer Jones, in the 1952 film Carrie, based on Theodore Dreiser's novel Sister Carrie. Olivier was nominated for a BAFTA for his performance.
