'Blessed Be the Bereaved' is part of a set of six illustrations by Mucha entitled 'The Beatitudes', considered to be his most spiritually influential illustrations these compositions convey the artists compassion for the rural people of the Czech Republic, portraying their customs and surroundings. Signed across the border below the illustration on black ink by Mucha below the title of work, an attractive example of a rare signature from a pioneer of the Art Nouveau movement.

Among the letters there are two items of particular interest - two letters from Henry Moore and 3 pages of answers submitted by L.B. Powell for an article on art and social purpose (dated 1936). The article starts in parts: "There has been no Democratis Art because there has been no real Democracy. The people have never been given the opportunity, or the educations, or the leisure to appreciate art for its own instrisic value in living.If a democratic art is likely to be brought about it will be by the existence of real democracy under which there would be great changes in education and art would be accessible to all."
