Campbell's Soups. ca. 1905

Lot 1: Campbell's Soups. ca. 1905

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Artist: ANONYMOUS Size: 38 3/4 x 26 3/4 in./98.4 x 68 cm This embossed tin sign of soup cans arranged to simulate the American flag remains an icon among early American advertising. It is estimated that there are no more than six copies extant. When first produced for in-store displays, there was a furor about the supposed desecration of the flag, and the company immediately recalled and destroyed all of them. "The reasons this sign is held in such high regard are many, and include its extreme rarity, its extraordinary design, the reverence collectors have for the American flag, the prominence and longevity of the Campbell's soup brand (which continues to this day), and the manner in which the design of the sign foreshadows the Pop Art Movement of the 1960s (which also featured Campbell's soup cans as well as American flags as important design elements). The tremendous size ... colors, rarity and overall appeal combine to make this one of the very few, and certainly most famous and classic, of all early American advertising items" (from a 2003 auction catalog).

Condition Report: B/ Usual aging and wear on tin. Framed.

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Artist: ANONYMOUS Size: 39 7/8 x 29 1/4 in./101.2 x 74.2 cm Strobridge Litho, Cincinnatti Before taking on George Thatcher as a partner, Primrose & West had gained popularity by being one of the few American shows to offer the British-style version of minstrel entertainment, favoring the placement of blackfaced actors in high-society roles and situations rather than featuring lowbrow comedy and African spirituals. Here, the three owners are shown winning a "race" against other minstrel troupes.

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Artist: ANONYMOUS Size: 40 1/8 x 51 1/4 in./102 x 130.1 cm L. Lévy Bréger, Bordeaux A truly strange design promoting the popular cabaret performer Aristide Bruant. Best known as a figure in many posters by Toulouse-Lautrec, this particular image does not announce a specific show, but rather references the brutal imagery appearing in his chansons. In particular, the visual cues here may be referencing one of Bruant's most famous numbers, "A la Villette." In it, a girl recounts how her lover was imprisoned for robbery, and ultimately sent to the guillotine.

Condition Report: B/ Restored tears at bottom edge; mat stains in margins.

This image likely depicts the course of the Paris-Roubaix race, famous for its rough, cobblestone roads. The race was nicknamed "The hell of the North" after WWI, due to the destruction the course and its surrounding areas had sustained during the war, as shown here.

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Artist: ANONYMOUS Size: 20 x 29 in./50.8 x 73.8 cm David Allen, Belfast S.F. Cody was a popular Buffalo Bill imitator, presenting more of a theatrical event rather than a Wild West show. The Klondyke Nugget was a performance he developed in England best described as a "Wild West Melodrama," which turned out to be tremendously successful. Debuting in December of 1898, the show captured the allure of the American West for a foreign audience. Here, he presents the dramatic tale of the Summit of the Chilcoot Pass - Chilkoot Pass being the high-altitude route between Alaska and British Columbia frequently used by prospectors during the Klondike Gold Rush.

Jesorum began his solo career in 1913 as "The Great Pablo," then later as "Li-Ho Chang," and still later simply as "Chang." Though he toured all six continents with his magic show, it was in South America where he found his greatest success, best known for his presentation of "Shooting a Bullet Through a Woman," an illusion also performed by Carter the Great.

Description: Artist: ANONYMOUS Size: 24 5/8 x 39 3/4 in./62.5 x 101 cm Dorland Advertising, London This scenic overview of passengers boarding at Southampton affords the unknown artist who conceived this design an opportunity to impress us with the sheer enormity of the Leviathan. One of several vessels ceded by the Germans after World War I - originally christened the Vaterland - this ship became the nucleus of a new company organized under the name United States Lines. Her operators attempted to use her great size and patriotic appeal to keep her filled. Sadly, their strategy failed. As majestic a liner as she was, the ship earned the reputation for being the "Great White Elephant" as she never turned a profit. The Leviathan was broken up in Rosyth, Scotland, by June, 1938.
