GOOD DECORATED BLANKET CHEST.

Lot 430: GOOD DECORATED BLANKET CHEST.

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: GOOD DECORATED BLANKET CHEST. Dated and signed "1829 J. Spaun, Bethlehem", (Albany County, New York), pine. Dovetailed case, bracket feet, and original blue paint with yellow initials. Interior till. 21.5"h. 44"w. 17"d. The proportions and profile of the feet place this chest squarely in the growing body of New York-German chests made in Albany County. Other chests in this group include lot 192 at Garth's, January 2013. For a discussion of this understudied regional chest, see De Julio, "New York-German Painted Chests," in The Magazine Antiques, May 1985, pages 1156-1165. Genealogical research has identified many Spauns (Spohns) in Albany County in the 1820s and 1830s.

Condition Report: Original paint; however not a dry surface. Possibly cleaned and waxed. The till is poplar and appears original to the piece. Chips to proper right front foot. Proper left edge of lid is missing 6 inches of molding to front. We provide condition information when it is requested by a potential bidder, as a part of our dedication to excellent customer service. However, the absence of a condition statement does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition or completely free from wear and tear, imperfections, repairs, restorations or the effects of aging. Garth's Auctions shall have no responsibility for any error or omission regarding an item's condition. We encourage you to call or email with any questions.
