Lot 1061: Beverland, A. De Stolatae Virginitatis jure

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Beverland, A. De Stolatae Virginitatis jure Lucubratio academica. Leyden, J. Lindanus, 1680, (12),223,(4)p., 18th cent. calf, gilt ornamental border round covers, frontcover w. central gilt coat of arms of the Marquis of Stafford w. motto "Honi Soit Mal Y Pense", gilt boardedges, richly gilt spine w. red mor. letterpiece, a.e.g., sm. 8vo. - BOUND BEFORE: Idem. De Fornicatione Cavenda Admonitio. Sive Adhortatio ad Pudicitiam et Castitatem. N.pl., n.publ. ("Juxta Exemplar Londinense"), 1797, new and corr. ed., 109p. - Title of first work sl. soiled. WIth the engr. heraldic bookplate of the Marquis of Stafford on upper pastedown. = Adrian Beverland (1650-1716) studied at Leyden University, where he wrote Peccatum originale (1678), a treatise on 'original sin', for which he was expelled from the university, imprisoned and fined, but released and banned on promising never to write on the subject again. He moved to Utrecht, where his behaviour led to the magistrates privately warning him to leave the city; in response he wrote a satire called Vox clamantis in deserto, which he distributed in manuscript form. He moved to England in 1679 as secretary to Isaac Vossius, and published De fornicatione cavenda (...) in 1697, in which he claimed to have repented of his former dissolute lifestyle. After the death of Vossius he fell into a state of poverty and died insane in London in 1716. Ad 1: Gay/ Lemonnyer I, p.819; Graesse I, p.357; Brunet I, p.837. An erotico-satirical treatise on virginity, win which lots of citations, from jurisprudence as well as from literature, provide a panorama of Beverland's libertism; many passages of this work can be connected in various ways to Beverland's first work on original sin as well as to his unpublished work on pleasure hotels in the antiquity. Ad 2: Gay/ Lemonnyer I, p.794; Graesse I, p.357; Brunet I, p.837; Krivatsky 1185.

Description: (Borde, C.). Parapilla, poëme, et autres oeuvres libres et galantes. Florence, Paperini (= Lyon, Faucheux(?)), 1782, XV,(3),124p., handcol. engr. frontisp. and 10 plates (5x handcol. after BOREL), in 20th cent. gilt full green morocco w. gilt inner dentelles by E. HOTAT ET FILS, a.e.g., slipcase, sm. 8vo. - Occas. trifle yellowed/ foxed, otherwise a fine copy. The fine engravings, especially the six very skilfully coloured images by Borel, do explicit justice to the poem's subject: they show flying phalli approaching and entering various delighted ladies (including the usual nun) and, on the frontispiece, a group of naked women worshipping an altar carrying a large and pink male organ. Our copy of this clandestinely printed and reprinted work contains both the six Borel-engravings called for in several editions, and the five other prints present in other editions, each of which has a one-line engraved caption below the image. Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Flora's examen in d'Oriental. Rott., n.publ., n.d. (±1850), 16p., contemp. simple wr., sm. 8vo. - Paper sl. brittle; a few lvs. sl. unhinged. = Very rare, no copies traced. Doch stekkie is gewis..."
