Description: Continental, late 19th century. Comprising a cupboard, trestle table, and a pair of similarly carved armchairs with upholstered cushions. The trestle table with rectangular overhanging top above a frieze with three drawers to one side and shams to the reverse, supported on two winged griffin carved trestle legs joined by a stretcher with central roundel and supported on molded plinth bases. The cupboard with central cabinet displaying rondels with relief portraits of notable literary figures, above two drawers and framed by doors with leaded and stained glass panels. The chairs with carved apron, floral motifs, and columnette detail.

Condition Report: Appears to be good, with some wear commensurate with age.

In 1975, Rakuzin created ten artworks from which he produced a series of etchings that were used as illustrations for each chapter of Franz Kafka's novel "The Trial". This painting is the scene for Chapter 9. The image depicts the interior of a dark chapel with a man seated on a low stool with his back to the viewer. Another man, dressed in a dark gray robe, stands in front of him in an open doorway.
