It was designed by the Jesuit mathematician Francis Line, (1595-1675, also known as Hall) who taught at Liège, and was known for the ingenuity of his dials, comprising some 92 different dials on six levels, four with glass spherical dials fixed on iron brackets. Unfortunately it was not robust enough to survive the English weather, or indeed the Earl of Rochester and his friends who destroyed it in a drunken spree in 1675. We have been able to trace only this copy of the Latin edition at auction, in 1961, when it was sold as part of the library of the Marquess of Bute, from Dumfries House, Ayrshire, for £24 to Maggs. The English edition appears to be slightly more common and was reprinted as an appendix to Holwell's Clavis horologiae of 1686; a description of the dial is also included at the end of Leybourn's Dialling of 1682.
