BERNHARDT, SARAH. Autograph Letter Signed - (ALS)

Lot 50: BERNHARDT, SARAH. Autograph Letter Signed - (ALS)

Description: BERNHARDT, SARAH Autograph Letter Signed - (ALS) A fascinating, undated ALS from Sarah [Bernhardt], to Duq, in French, 4pp., 12mo, on her monogrammed, black-bordered stationery. The actress announces that she is in despair over the previous night's events, explaining "To take care of a chill of fever I went to bed and I wake up this morning with the roof of my mouth as well as the tonsils covered with plaques of herpes." She continues "I have difficulty swallowing and cannot talk; this is a streak of bad luck that I am worried about. I could certainly not play either today or tomorrow....I don't know what I am at and am lost." Bernhardt concludes "I urge you to send me Veijan and that he give me a heroic remedy." The final four letters of the signature are somewhat light, but overall this letter offers a compelling glimpse into Sarah Bernhardt's vivid life and personality. Further images on our auction website. Sold together with an original Sarony head and shoulders sepia cabinet photograph of the great actress, copyrighted New York, 1880, approx. 6.5 x 4.25".
